If it were purely about performance, then they could just use web services to grab the data they needed, style it on the client side and run it in an HTML control. How would drawing content using a native app help performance if the data requirements are the same -- rendering HTML isn't *THAT* slow on iOS, is it?
And with a web app, they have far more control over QA and the release process, and can potentially turn around minor updates much faster than if they had to jump through the App Store release process.
OTOH, they think they have a problem, then good for them. The current client has been buggy for me for quite a while, with navigation buttons sending me to random parts of the application -- they clearly have QA issues that aren't going to be helped (and likely will be made worse) by an app rewrite.
The carders they busted are low-life amateurs, not serious criminals. I'm sure the FBI and friends will milk this for all it's worth, but it's the equivalent of nicking a couple of shoplifters while at the same time, Mexican drug lords are burning down the entire city.
Come and wake me up when they bag some REAL criminals, like the big Russian gangsters robbing SMEs out of hundreds of millions per annum.
The real criminals are untouched -- and untouchable.
The sort of people dominating STEM in the English-speaking countries are precisely the people we want: hungry, ambitious, motivated and with something to prove. We need more or them, and in any case, if we don't get them, then somebody else will. They contribute to OUR bottom line, or potentially, to somebody else, like China, who hate us and don't share our values or morals.
People who are talented, and prepared to move countries to work hard and make the world a better place, should be honoured as heroes, not vilified or rejected.
China is ALREADY full-blown klepto. They have a major deep-seated cultural problems where their only morality is getting rich, no matter how much damage they cause or how many people they hurt.
See a recent article on the Bronte Capital blog, "The Macroeconomics of Chinese Kleptocracy".
Reminds me of Big Fat Gypsy Wedding or Michael Carroll.
A rich scumbag will ALWAYS be a scumbag, despite having money (or pretending to have money). It's just that the mainland Chinese and the gulf Arabs haven't gotten the memo yet.
Automatic orbital rendezvous and docking is no mean feat. Respect to the engineers involved.
What cracks me up, is how silly and inmature the mainland Chinese are as a nation though. They are so insecure, that they have to send the hottest female fighter pilot they could find into space, and then Photoshopped all the pictures. There's obviously no word for "tokenism" in the Chinese language.
The Chinese Communist Party is sooooo insecure. Everything they do is about making or preserving face, rather than merely trying to generally do the right thing, as in the West. It's hilarious, sad and piss weak.
Goes to show what a bunch of idiot reactionaries the people running the show in Westminster are.
Are they going to show us any evidence that such a drastic and draconian law is required? Where is the evidence that this is needed?
It's all down to the idiotic, blind ideology that we've come to expect from the halfwits in power.
Somehow, I'm hoping that these people ARE actually smarter than they appear, and are simply putting this forward to distract the media from something more reactionary and ideologically-driven they're doing elsewhere.
And if you think this is bad, you should see the hysterical "OMG somebody think of the children" crap coming from the Tory back bench, e.g. Nadine Dorries.
We have a saying here: if you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas.
Maybe the Pakistanis will start shit on China's western flank, and they'll start sending in waves upon waves of the world's most vicious and bloodthirsty terrorists to start shit, like they've done in Kashmir. Maybe China needs a few thousand more involuntary organ donors.
Totally happy for China to learn that lesson the hard way. Let's see how that 'all weather friendship works out', once the super-Muslims of Pakistan work out that the Chinese are even bigger godless kuffars than the hated white man.
So much for that vaunted ancient Chinese wisdom, huh?
By all means try and justify Chinese exceptionalism. Just don't expect people to like you (personally or collectively) very much.
America has lots of friends. On the other hand, China has North Korea, Pakistan and a bunch of shitty African dictatorships only. If people are judged by the company they keep, then China is utterly, royally fucked.
This is also why Scala will never catch on. It's elegant and powerful, but requires a level of expertise, experience and interest that is way above the average of your typical enterprise app developer. This leads to code consistency issues, hiring problems, etc.
Nothing will take off, unless there's a reasonable chance of large, average-skilled teams building stuff consistently well with it.
Amen, the LAST thing we want to be doing is fighting fair.
Fighting dirty is okay for them, just FINE. After all, these people are fine with sending waves of suicide bombers, or planting barbaric, indiscriminate IEDs.
I think it's hypocritical of them to complain about dirty pool, when they're world masters at it, and unlike us, don't give a tinker's damn about collateral damage.
.NET is kinda nice from a technical point of view, especially if you like fiddling with parsers and compilers. MSIL is a very nice intermediate language to emit from the front end of a compiler...
Java itself is a simple and clean language, and is not that bloated by current standards.
I think it gets a bad rap, because people think 'applets', or 'J2EE', or worse yet, the countless piles of crap foisted upon them at work, known as 'enterprise software'.
The objective reality, I think, is quite different from often-mistaken perception -- I've seen both garbage and masterpieces written in everything from Ruby, to VB6, to Java, to Perl. Depends on the programmer, not the tools or languages.
I've seen "C" written in Java. And it ain't pretty.
OTOH, well designed, modern hotspot JITters can optimize in ways a static compiler can't.

This article is red meat for right wing and libertarian nutjobs.

To be fair, it's no worse than our own feral and out-of-control overclass here in the West.
Thieves, liars, barbarians, murderers -- and also insufferably arrogant.
Because they were caught repeatedly stealing US satellite technology.
They are being punished for being thieves and moral bankrupts, and they only have themselves to blame.
So what does Opa actually do?
I'm an enterprise Java developer, and even I had to read that three times to work out what it's meant for.
They'll find a way to cheat, they always do.

Am I the only person who find it amusing that a libertarian named his son after his favourite author?

... looks like ass.
Or vagina.

"Peaceful rise", my foot.
A reasonable and fair comment.

If China want to be jingoistic and stupid and waste their money on 40 year old technology, then let them.
They'll still steamroll the world through sheer economic might and weight of numbers, but this will delay the inevitable for a few days.

Insightful. Mod parent up.
