Don't believe me? Talk to an advertising agency. They seem to know something that we super-intelligent people here on Slashdot don't. Why in the hell would they spend so much money just to buy a 30-second clip if it didn't have any effect on people?

Has anyone here ever played Sim City? Did you notice that crime rates were lowest in the areas with the highest property value? Real life works the same way.

Now, I don't think we need to curb violent games to curb violence. There's no causality shown. However, I do think that it's morally wrong to enjoy the sight of somebody being mutilated or to celebrate revenge (good guys taking revenge has always bugged me).

I think you're mostly right. There's one more factor, though. For example: I work at a place that I would never leave unless someone could pay me practically double for the same work. Why? It's great here. I've harldy worked overtime, and I've been able to make decisions about how I'm going to do things (as opposed to people above me doing that). They pay me reasonably well - at least well enough to buy a house, support my family, and keep up-to-date on technology.

But I think that, in about a year or so, I'll get bored of it and go somewhere else. When I've exhausted everything new that there is to do here, I won't be able to stand it anymore. Satisfaction from work is nice, and so is good compensation and a good working environment - and my job supplies all of that - but I can't stagnate.

Well, one thing's for sure - if you start charging Americans by bit or byte, you'll make them angry. We're used to paying a flat rate per month for just about everything, including our cars. It would screw up our expectations completely. Anyway, if an ISP did that, I'd expect any self-respecting-used-to-flat-rates American to change ISP's.

I spent two years in Britian, where they charge you for your time on the telephone. I hated it. And at least half the people I met didn't even have a telephone, especially in inner-city Glasgow. By contrast, almost everyone in this country has a telephone - why? Because with a flat rate, it also costs less.

Charging anything but a flat rate will only drive people away, and widen the "digital divide."
