  1. Re:The reason for password disclosure on San Francisco DA Discloses City's Passwords · · Score: 2, Insightful

and yet another reason why username/password is one of the poorest "security" measures in place for any level of access to sensitive systems. I am certain of one thing, system admins the world over will look back on our primitive username/passwords and laugh. Just another argument for RSA SecurID or biometrics or smart cards.

Yes, it's quite obvious we're the only ones doing what's right. That evidence is echoed worldwide, why look what good we're doing in the Middle East. American Foreign Policy has not been a pretty thing for at least the past 8yrs and really, much longer than that. Off topic maybe, on point definitely. If we had free trade with Cuba, they most likely would be the 51st State by now and a fine vacation spot. Embargos typically make the poorest and weakest of the nation being embargoed suffer. Those in power, find a way to remain in power. Now free trade and capitalism, and the free flow of ideas, now those things can be infective and spark great things, (see Fall of the USSR). I think it would be difficult at best to cite US foreign policy success where Cuba is concerned. Anyway, nice story from Washington Post 2/19/08 is here http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/19/AR2008021901649.html

  4. A good defense is a better offense on MIT Student Plans to Take on RIAA · · Score: 2, Interesting

I always read these RIAA prosecution stories and the comments and they are mostly the same. I often wonder, maybe too simplistically, why no one plays this angle. Maybe I pre-date most of those on slashdot but as an avid buyer of vinyl in the 80's, I was wondering if purchasing the record in 1980 that has long since worn out, I might convince a jury that the Music industry actually sold me a defective product, and I was only replacing that product by downloading the MP3 of that album in 2007. Maybe even launch a class action lawsuit against the record labels related to selling defective products designed to wear out. Might I consider my purchase of the song in 1980 a license in perpetuity that entitles me to own a single copy of that song and that my download of the MP3 was witin my rights, implied by the contract I entered into with the record label when I purchased the song on vinyl decades ago? Probably a stretch and maybe not based on solid legal ground but it sure would make for an interesting episode of Boston Legal!

[Citations.]"http://ahrc.com/old/HOAorg/News/keyreports/kr_avigation.html Okay so at 10:55pm it is dark. Helicopters can be heard but maybe not seen. So, I am out using my laser pointer to highlight the astronomical sites and the excessive vibration must have caused the pointer to be inadvertently jostled from my grip and at that point struck the pilot. I am countersuing the Sherriff's department because they flew in the airspace above my home at such a low altitude so as to interfere with my enjoyment of the stars and these charges have proven to be a huge inconvenience. Oh yeah, that's good. Get a sympathetic jury, a decent lawyer and the accused might make out very well.

That's what we all thought back in '04. Fast Forward 50 yrs as multiple robotic probes begin landing all over the earth. What we soon find out is that back in '04 our Rovers disturbed an Ancient nanovirus long dormant in the martian dust. As we pondered the quick demise of our rovers the nanovirus was quickly overtaking the newly found hardware and multiplying rapidly and in increasingly complex ways. That's right, we created the "rise of the machines" and you guessed it....President Schwarzenegger we need you now......
And on slashdot, they scoffed that "mars is dead" .........coming soon to a theatre near you....Terminator 44 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger III and everyone's favorite martian, Marvin......

I think Robotics is just such a cool new frontier...I wonder if surveillance in a hospital setting or nursing home might be a possible positive use...

I thought the /. crowd would at least have more well-thought ideas like some smart card technology. RSA SecurID has some good products, we use their keyfobs that have a randomly generated 6-digit number that is used in conjunction with a 4-digit PIN and while this isn't perfect and is not "free" (like traditional passwords) we are very confident in the protection of our data. Isn't anyone working on an inexpensive SMart Card or embedded Proximity Card that we can slip under our fingernails? Come on /.'ers!
