I live in Cheltenham, UK (a city of approximately 100,000) and my 5 year old flat block has over 150 units in it; but due to anti-competitive ISP consolidation (and very bad business decisions), companies haven't invested in modern internet infrastructure. I've seen my local exchange. It is a barely manageable mess of copper cables and dangling punch down blocks which isn't due an to upgrade to support ADSL2 for more than a year.

The fastest internet connection I can purchase is a mere 2.2mbps downstream/100 kbps upstream; I had faster internet access 20 years ago when I lived in Ottawa, Canada. Screw the villagers, put the money were the population is.

Ubuntu is a great distro, and if you don't have the money to invest in the "Apple Experience", it is probably the best you can put on a PC. I will be installing Ubuntu on a webhost sometime soon, and I know I will be impressed. Although, when it comes to complete production desktops Apple they may monopolize your desktop on OS X but at least things always "just work."
I haven't given up on Open Source, though. I could leave Gaim behind, so I found Adium. Inkscape and Gimp were already waiting for me. I couldn't have been happer when I switched.

  10. Re:Charter Challenge + Shoot Down on Bill Would Let Police Monitor Email · · Score: 1

If they didn't use the notwithstanding clause to appease those against gay marriage in Canada, there's no way they'll use the notwithstanding clause with a bill that would be rather unpopular across party lines. Besides, after Paul Martin pulled all the "notwithstanding clause" fear-mongering on C-38 with respects to the Conservative Party, there's no way he can do it now.

  11. Charter Challenge + Shoot Down on Bill Would Let Police Monitor Email · · Score: 2, Interesting

Canada's got a couple of things working against this proposed bill. First off, we're in a minority Government right now, and I can name two political parties which are used to hold the balance on a regular basis who would have nothing to do with such a horrid bill. Also, the bill wouldn't pass the House of Commons for a long while, considering how much stalling would happen in comittee. This is probably how all these horrid bills you see will be forgotten, we're on the verge of a federal election the moment the House of Commons returns from recess, and bills die on the floor if not passed before Parliament disolves.

Also, it would never survive a Charter challenge, especially since aspects of the bill allow police to intercept and read open email without a warrant. Mail in Canada, like in the US, is probably one of the most protected forms of communication. One would argue (I can't wait until Michael Geist (http://michaelgeist.ca/) gets his hands on this), that it clearly is in direct opposition to Canada's Charter of rights and Freedoms. Section 8 of the charter clearly states that "Everyone has the right to be secure against unreasonable search or seizure."

In short, boo to the Liberals for proposing such a piece of work, yay for the polical system of Canada working against it.

I remember playing around with a Juke-box type program on windows 3.1, sure it only played midi and wav files, but it used buttons and looked like a tape-deck/amp setup. If I seem to recall correctly, not only did it show the name of the file being played (with the path), but the time remaining/total time of the song.

So, 93 would make it prior art. I do believe it came on a floppy full of software with the SoundBlaster card when we upgraded our 486-100.

What is more dynamic than manipulating your world with the power of the written word? I never really understood why people want to see everything themselves, instead of using their imagination. I have found every attempt at a graphical role playing/virtual world game to be constraining and unpleasant.

Moving around in a pre-determined environment, and interacting with your world in only specified ways is hardly role playing/living a virtual life. It's unfortunate that the current trend has people who once would have picked up a book heading off to the movie theatre to see big explosions and horribly flat dialogue.
