    My kid has Nintendogs and he loves it. The concept probably isn't much different than Tamagotchi, but the game makes use of the internal microphone so you can train the dogs with your voice, whistle for them, etc.

    of course they're not going to do any family planning. From their standpoint, they need lots of kids so they will have someone to survive and take care of them when they are old. That was the mindset when Social Security and its equivalents in other industrialized nations were started too. But having kids in many of these countries is basically an afterthought now and that's why those programs are in jeopardy. The programs may survive if immigrants keep pouring in and keep having kids at the same rate as they did back home. Japan will probably the only major industrialized nation that in 50 years will have a population that will be remotely similar to what they have now due to their strict immigration controls. But their population will decline and it's one of the big reasons they are investing so much in robotics: they won't have the workforce to sustain their economy and will need machines to pick up the slack.

    I've been thinking about getting one of those for a Nomad3 replacement. I don't use them very much for listening to music. Mainly for recording bands.

    You can buy replacement iPod battery kits for $16. That's a lot cheaper than getting replacement batteries for my Nomad3. I think the display scratch isssue is overblown. I've gone into stores and tried to scratch demo units. Unless you're digging at it with keys, it's not very noticeable.

    so you're saying that the reason that the music stores operated by Napster, Yahoo, Walmart, etc aren't having much impact against iTMS is because they aren't embedded into MSFT Media player? Even though they are offering free downloads?

    people on /. bitch and complain about how Apple prices their products. They would really fuss about a 1GHz G4 desktop for $800 or the media center machine for $2500 from that honest company. It's nice knowing that the options exist, though. Thanks for the link.

    That's true. If you time things right and get a coupon, Dell has some awesome deals that change every week. But when you're writing up a proposal to add N number of PCs for the next year's school budget, it could be difficult to factor those deals in when it may be weeks or months for the proposal to get reviewed and approved.

    My experience with entry level consumer laptops like those you mention has been either playing around with them in the stores or fixing them for relatives. They are pieces of crap. That $499-599 would be better spent on a used business class laptop in good condition from the classified ads or ebay.

    Maybe he likes building things that blow up? An RA in our dorm loved building bombs in his room and going up into the mountains to see how high they would make boulders fly. There are many engineers who are proud to build things that go BOOM!

    The non-lethal weapon I want is the capture net that is fired from a 37 mm launcher, with weights at the corners that spiral around the guy. I'd use that one at meetings for when someone comes up with a really bad idea- the kind of bad idea that needs to be stopped now before too many PHB-types hear it. I'd stand up, say "stop right there" and fire the net around the person, immobilizing him before his bad idea got any traction. I really think that would help me make my point.

    Yeah, but combine that with an HR department that has a hair trigger when it comes to firing people over 'uncomfortable workplace/sexual harrassment' issues and you get an environment where you could lose your job for merely asking someone out. Remember, geeks aren't that great at social interaction and communications. What we may think is perfectly acceptible may trigger a "Ewww..that creepy IT guy is hitting on me" email shitstorm that will culminate with you unemployed by the end of the day.
