  1. Re:Office and Photoshop on Sizing Up StarOffice 6.0 · · Score: 1

If you know how to use Gimp you will see that it is not equal to photoshop, but in fact better in some ways and inferior in others. I love some of the art tigert and others do in gimp. Gimp is quite powerful so try learning it a little better before knocking it.

I agree about office though. It's a shame.

It was about 3 years ago and the admin where I was working got in a verbal fight with my boss and ended up quitting. At the time I was a web developer and had basic unix knowledge so when the boss asked, "Who knows Unix?!?" and I responded with "I can list files in a directory and add users, does that count?" I was given the job, a stack of O'Reilly books and put all my efforts into learning as much as I could as fast as possible.

Linux isn't something only Linus uses either, many people who use linux made the initial switch as a result of being fed up with Microsoft software.

Slackware is a great, balls-to-the-wall distro and doesn't try to make life easy for people who can't be bothered to read a manual or a book on how to use operating systems properly.

Debain is of course the only exception, but even Debian has more fluf than I want in a linux distro.

I'm a student at Northeastern and the computer science department here are big fans of Slackware and use it for our linux machines. Everyone else I know are big fans of slackware. It is in no way dead and it's userbase is still large!

I go to school in Boston and recently was told in class that a kid managed to crack his way into some of the NSA's computers. The NSA asked my University for logs of the users network use and the school produced detailed logs going back to when he registered his computer for network use. Pretty scary that the school would actually record all our network use. Obviously not the packets themselves, but hosts the kid connected to and so on. Scared me pretty good.
