Hopefully best buy will learn and have someone who is technically savvy review things in the future.

Do you REALLY believe that Best Buy, a company with revenues of 45 BILLION dollars in 2008, and a company who makes most of its money selling 'technology related goods', isn't having a technically savvy TEAM review things? I'm afraid you're overly simplifying things here...

Did they screw up? Yes. Should we give them the benefit of the doubt? Maybe. Their past fumblings do indeed show a pattern, so my inclination to give them the benefit of the doubt becomes smaller and smaller each time I read stories like these. And right now, my inclination is quite small.

I go to www.cuil.com and search on the term 'cuil'. It has no idea that the search engine exists (itself).

Sorry, but if a search engine has no idea of its own existence in its own indexes, there's something seriously wrong with their algorithm :-)

That report is almost a year old, and is based on data "spanning a period from November, 2003 to October 2004".

Sorry, when it comes to security, I like fresh data...

That report might have been accurate at that very moment in time, but the area of information security is so dynamic, that older reports, such as this one, while insightful, shouldn't be used as a barometer for the present or the future.

  7. Who has the time to go to court? on Do-Not-Email Registries? · · Score: 1

It would award consumers $10 for each unwanted message that they receive, assuming they are willing to take the spammer to court. If they win the case, their attorney's fees would be reimbursed.

Once again, the burden is put upon the consumer. How many of us have the time to prepare and actually got to court, just to win about $100 (if you got 10 emails)? My time is more valuable than that.

Why don't State (and the Feds) governements get it? As long as the 'process' is a burden on the consumer, it won't work in the long run...

What we need is for some severe penalties and possibly jailtime as a result of sending unsolicited spam. Get the consumer out of the loop. Heck, in many cases, the consumer is too busy cleaning out their inbox than having to deal with going to court, etc...

As an IT professional for the past 10 years, I can tell you that my employer has stopped expensing people's trips to Comdex. There's just not enough ROI there to approve the expense anymore. And with companies losing money left and right, extraneous expenses like trips to Comdex are the first things they look at when they want to cut costs.
Once the economy rebounds, either Comdex, or another trade-show will rise from the ashes and become *the* place to be if you're an IT professional. Until then, corporations are more worried about bottom-line and stockholder expectations, than letting Joe IT go on a trip to Vegas...

  10. Is KDE trying to be Windows? on KDE 3.1 Released · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is another terrific release by the KDE team and I commend them on yet another release of some pretty sweet code.

I have one concern though, that I have seen others raise in the past and which makes me wonder if we're heading in the right direction. A quick scan through the new features is almost like reading about the new features introduced in a previous version of Windows. Is KDE simply trying to be 'more like Windows', which in turn would make KDE a much more familiar 'interface' for newbies to use? If so, then that's great and I'm sure that it will help increase its use amongst the masses.

What bothers me is that I'm beginning to see less and less 'innovation' and more and more 'feature copying'. Now, I understand that it's difficult to add a killer new feature without first having a base that an average user would expect to have, but when will we be able to reach the point where we can begin to 'differentiate' KDE from Windows in a unique way in order to furthur 'entice' potential users who simply see KDE as a 'Windows wanna-be'?

I for one love KDE and have used it as my primary desktop environment for at least a couple years now, and I always look forward to updates such as this one. They're always full of neat goodies. But I always get that feeling in the back of my mind that maybe we should try to 'think out of the box' a little more...
