    like the posters above said, you can get Microsoft software for less than 20 dollars on college campuses that have deals with Microsoft.

    From my experience, whenever I email a college/university asking them to check out a computer that is packeting they don't reply back (last case being asu.edu).

    um, dude.. I work for a small ISP in South Texas and we go thru Level 3 for our internet connectivity. They were hit hard, no ping replies at all. I run an IRC server and that was connecting on and off through the night. I couldn't get anywhere on the net till around 8:30 this morning. Luckily this happened during the night so we won't get that many complaints from customers that 'the Internet is down'.

    You don't have to patch your kernel or upgrade X-windows to watch dvd's or videos using Linux. Just install a modern Linux distribution like RedHat or SuSe, download a couple rpms, install them and you're set. Many people have written guides to playing dvd's and videos from a freshly installed RedHat, I know theres a webpage on the RedHat website on how to play dvd's/mp3s. Just search for google for more information....

    it's rare that I use an application that doesn't use gtk or qt, both which use xft2. only exception that comes to mind is mozilla and that program is already xft2 compatible.

    Why should RedHat do that? They're not a charity, they have to make business choices and it's been clear since RedHat 5 or 6 that they favored GNOME.

    Although iTunes is a great mp3 player, nobody's going to stop making easier to use/better/ mp3 players, so who knows, maybe they will write a better mp3 player than iTunes

    XFree86 runs about the same as the Windows 2000 GUI on my computer (a cheapy 750 Duron and onboard video card). I honestly can't see the difference in video performance. Maybe if you're a gamer and fight for every FPS with a Geoforce card, but even there NVIDIA has drivers that give the same performance as the Windows drivers do.

    umm.. dude.. I make a little more than 20K too and I would LOVE to have an ibook because they're kickass laptops and of course it runs the great (in my opinion) Mac OS X.

    So I might be a bit childish for wanting to enjoy my computer/laptop that I'll be using all the time ( i happen to work at an ISP and need a laptop on the go), I think it's worth it.

    It's not.. that's why you go out and buy a three button mouse.

    Or you can use one of the function keys on an iBook for your 2nd and 3rd mouse button.

    If you get all your RPMS from RPM or get all your debs from the official Debian servers and follow the instructions, you shouldn't have rpm or deb dependency hell.

    Once you start downloading third party debs/rpms, from who know's where on whoever's hacked up computer, then you're on your own.

    Lose market share? I'm not sure most people care if they have KDE 3.0 or 3.1, its not that drastic difference like it is from 2.0 to 3.0. I dont know why RedHat just doesn't drop KDE already so they don't have to put up with KDE fanatics and put ALL their resources into making GNOME better.

    apt.. too complex for you? ummm... apt-get install kde mozilla whatever. Is that too hard for you to do? I used to care about compiling programs, but now I don't have much time to worry about Makefiles and recompiling my whole operating system. I'll leave that to the Debian folks. Plus you don't have to use dselect (it's being phased out for the next Debian release).


    As far as your other complaints about file structure, it's a matter of preference, I know where the program configs are (/etc/someserver/) and the documentation (/usr/share/doc/someprogram/).


    And yes, sometimes I forget about my Debian servers running at work.

    Yeah.. the only price competitive product Apple has is the newer iBooks. Sure they're a bit slower than a 1000 dollar laptop, but when I'm using my laptop I accept the little bit of slowdown in exchange for longer lasting battery power and less heat dissipation. Plus they run Mac OS X!

    Yes.. the MAC address of the NIC card is included in a .doc or anything you write using MS Office. This is how they caught the person in the Philippenes who wrote some virus that came out last year.

    Come on, not everybody has relatives with the Communisty Party in China.

    People have DIED because of these filtering techologies from Cisco. Think about it, someone wanting a change for the better (SOME form of democracy) in their country and they get caught by a router that Cisco specially made for capturing dissidents.

    Windows NT/2000/XP do not run on top of MS-DOS. Windows 98,95, ME do though.

    pdf is not proprietary. Check this post out for more details. You don't need any Adobe program to read pdfs. Adobe does make Acrobat for Linux, but you can use xpdf to display pdfs.

    Duh! features dont come free, ya know. KDE 1.x had a shitty html renderer and doesn't look as nice as KDE 3.x look today. KDE is fast enough on my 750mhz Duron/384MB of RAM. I can't actually see any speed difference on the Athlon I use at work.

    Of course, theres nothing stopping you if you wanna run KDE 1.x right now...

    You can try FreeBSD on a spare computer.. I dont like recompiling every piece of software, myself. Of course you can just pkg_add -r any program but you can do the same thing with Debian/RedHat using apt-get.

    I prefer Debian stable for the servers I run at work ( I work at an ISP). Makes for easy admin'ing and more time to slack off ;)
