AMD Opteron Due In April
·
· Score: 5, Informative
The Opteron is being launched on the 22nd of April. It was code named Sledgehammer, and is what Newisys and others are using. It is the server version of Hammer.
Athlon 64 is coming out in September. It is the desktop and mobile version of Hammer that was codenamed Clawhammer.
There will not be a June 3rd launch of the Athlon 64. It isn't going to happen. June 3rd doesn't even line up with Cebit America dates. Major AMD product launches almost always correspond with some trade show, and an release of this size definitely would.
I love when someone submits a story pretending like they weren't the ones that wrote it. It is either that or they are really Bob Dole. Bob Dole managed to benchmark the Athlon 64. Bob Dole can play Unreal Tournament. Bob Dole... Bob Dole... Martin Sheen wants to tell you what to do. Martin Sheen is president. Martin Sheen I say!!!
This was a poorly worded Reuter's story on Forbes. This information is not correct, and nothing has changed from what CEO Hector Ruiz has been saying for months. AMD will more closely partner with companies in CPU design, as we reported months ago. They will also partner in FABs as with the announced UMC deal. They have never focused on the high end where AMD is. Why do so many completely incorrect statements get upped to 5 insightful when they are wrong? Bottom line is AMD is continuing even greater level of partnerships, and is going to listen to customers, not tell them what to do like Intel does. They are not going to no longer compete with Intel. Thanks Reuters! Hire a real tech writer please.
I've been selling the same sort of MINI ITX boxes to quite a few people. There setup is based on the VIA 500MHz C3 model with Casetronic MINI ITX case with PCI riser. Not too shabby, although costs could be cut by using embedded memory onboard instead of using the compact flash to ide adapter. Now if VIA would get the DDR memory based Eden 2 out that would make a sweet little box.
You won't get one from me at that price. FIC is not 3com, and the Audrey is not the Aquapad. Audrey? What kind of a wuss would buy something called Audrey?;)

You don't have to buy a wireless access point with it, you should already have one by now. What, you can't afford it? Then stop bitching.:-)
ageitgey
Because I wanted one, so I found out how to buy it, people saw it, also wanted it. No one in the US sells it. Why the fuck would I want to support a bad product? Have you ever done tech support? I have, and until you have supported a crappy product shut up.

You want a keyboard, plug one in. For most purposes you don't need to enter anything, in fact if everyone used this to read the post I bet it would get rid of 95% of the total bs most people post in the talkback these days. The lazy people won't take the time to post something stupid when they have to tap it in. I'm all for that.

Small battery, good sized screen, equals 3-3.5 hours of battery life. Design tradeoffs and cost tradeoffs have to be made. There is no perfect product, but this one is close enough for me.

Refer to ageitgey's response. Don't you have a conflict of interest reading slashdot and then buying linux based products? Yeah, I'll make loads of money off the 10 I might sell at just above cost, not factoring my time spent and tech support. Oh yeah, I'm not making shit. Dick. Is it possible for you to fathom that I'm trying to do people a favor?
Well that was fun. Thanks to the 3 or4 of you that had something intelligent to say. For the rest of you polish up your jokes and sarcasm, because this talkback is weak.
nvidia has a most impressive product with their new mobile, in fact it incorporates not only many new enhancements to the performance, but also power savings and the ability to swap out parts. for the notebook crowd these are great advances. perhaps alan is a bit enthusiastic like i am, but of course he doesn't have to be because nvidia doesn't buy ads from us, and we don't kiss anyones ass unless they have come up with something impressive. so ugh to you anonymous coward. if you were for real you would log in, don't you think?
Is Intel paying you directly or thur alternative sources?;) Yeah, it was fantastic at E3 when they couldn't show me a Black and White demo on the P4 when it kept blue screening. That was fantastic! Anyway, go ahead, pay twice as much, get 2/3 of the performance in a server. I'll happily serve a million plus sessions a month on my little Athlon 900.
you have to go to the console and type r_smp 1 to enable it, r_smp will tell you whether it is enabled or not. After enabling it you will have to restart the game.
Here's the low down on the dual Athlon. It is incredibly fast for any server or workstation application. Of course the app has to be SMP capable which is why your seeing the new KT266A chipset single CPU system beat it out in some apps, but those are only non SMP capable apps. It is apples and oranges. Yes, I would like to see some chipset improvements to the 760MP. The latency is too high. Perhaps the 760MPX will address some of this. I would very much like VIA to commit to their dual Athlon chipset, but they have not as of yet. Another issue is heat. While they do use the cooler running Palomino core, they are still quite hot for say a 1-2U rack. The shrink to.13 micron early next year will eliminate that issue and should hasten adoption by larger computer makers. For the time being though it is a relatively cheap solution for those who need it, and is a blazingly faster web server for those who know how to set it up. Check out my review for more, my site is still up, and we didn't copy anyones site idea.
The amount of misinformation I've read in less than a minute is making me sick. What is the ratio of noise to real information on/. now? About 1 out of every 1,000 of you know what you are talking about, most of you seem to get off at seeing your nickname in the fucking thread. salimma1 you have no idea how many cores of the Athlon there have been. The previous to this AMD was on the model 4. A quick read of the tech docs tells you that. VAXman, so it is a paper launch eh? Then what do you call the GHz mobile PIII? There is not enough data yet to determine how many of these are available yet. We probably won't have that data until the conference call AMD has in about an hour, or maybe until the Q2 earnings conference call, calling it a paper launch is premature. If AMD wanted to paper launch it then why didn't they announce when the PIII was announced. That does not make sense. nathanm, do you seriously think you will be seeing a mobile P4 anytime soon? If you do you need to do some research. You can't even get a P4 into a 1U server, much less a notebook. The Athlon will scale well past what the PIII will be able to do. Everyone knows that, or they should. "All AMD ever does is rip Intel's work and force them to release inferior products. " WTF? wyrm, no shit they don't have reviews, what are they going to do? buy a few laptops and compare them? This is a mobile part that probably doesn't work in the desktop because it has a different amount of pins. Even the boy wonder what he is saying some of the time couldn't get a laptop. In fact the screensavers guys I talked to Saturday are the only ones I know that have one.
that article was pathetic, i thought maybe slashextreme would end when sharky jumped ship, but it appears not. can/. support internet.com any more? why not just point the domain straight at them?
Wow, the two worst reviews from the Intel biased sites get posted. Surprise surprise. Here are a lot better reviews from sites that have not sold out.:)
Here's what I posted to my site. Funny, I send in good AMD Hammer Linux info and I get rejected, but unlikely stuff like this and every article at sharkyextreme gets posted.
Legit 1.53GHz Dual Athlon Sandra Scores?
Reported by: Chris Tom At: 9:00 PM Source: e-mail
2CPU has what they are calling Dual 1.53GHz Athlon scores on a Tyan board. Well, there are a couple of problems with that which make me very, very unsure that these are legit. First of the Tyan 760MP board does not have overclocking features. I know, I held one in my hands at Comdex. So you think that they might add clock multiplier features in the meantime? Nope, what they had was the final revision of the board which only needs a final chipset from AMD to be complete. Second, it is very difficult to get a 1.2GHz Athlon to even 1.4GHz, much less 1.53GHz, and then you are telling me they got two to go that high? Lastly there are no details about this system at all except that it is using the Tyan board. Who knows, maybe it could be right, and I'm not saying 2CPU is making it up, but there are not enough details and not enough evidence, and there is too much logic keeping me from believing it. And for the fools that will say that I am jealous because I don't have dual scores to post here, don't even bother e-mailing me. That is ridiculous.
They will be selling them again with AT&T starting after Thanksgiving. Then they will resume selling them on their own after January 31st. They just canceled their remaining contract with Quanta. I assume this means they will be going with someone else or perhaps get AT&T to assist them.

All Socket A Athlons and Durons are multiprocessing enabled. They only require a new chipset to do so. AMD is developing the 760MP for this purpose. It will also support DDR SDRAM. This topic will be discussed in much detail at the Microprocessor Forum next week. VIA may or may not develope a multiprocessor capable chipset for AMD processors. I'll be covering all news of the 760MP next week at AMDZone, and expect Tuesday to be the big news day if you are interested in the 760MP. There should be a load of new information, and possibly a press release or two.

I think the FIC Aquapad blows it away. Midori Linux, wireless, infrared, multimedia support, IBM Microdrive support. I'm kissing my Iopener goodbye.
