The UN is not the United Peoples of the World. It is the United Governments of the World.
It is pretty clear that most governments are corrupt. So a society of corrupt leaders doesn't really forward the best interests of people. Isn't it about time to ask them to kindly relocate?
Cable will either do this voluntarily or they will be history in about 5-10 years.
If it comes to us through government, you can bet they will only make the whole thing worse and probably include hidden boondoggles to artificially prop the TV providers up.
Microsoft, to its credit, figured out that users don't like to have one foot in one universe and the other foot in another while using their computer. They like one interface that they don't have to warp from in order to continue working.
Wouldn't you suspect that, on the day when half of the "car" driving done in the country is done in the air, that any law which does not require extensive training for the pilot would be overturned?
Either flying cars will always require a traditional pilot's license. Or we will first need to master the art of self-driving cars and remove almost any possibility that a passenger or owner of a vehicle can control the fine traveling decisions of the craft; i.e. only decide the desitnation.
Do what? The ruling from the court protects a "not doing" not a "doing". It protects your right to not give up one of your encryption passwords. So what was the "it" you are referring to in your questions?
Can we all just agree that carrying forward the ancient concept of copyright is ridiculous in a world where it cannot be enforeced without draconian measures?
What's Draconian about a cease and desist letter? It takes minutes to write one, and it takes the people ripping off someone else's work to further their own commercial activities minutes to take down the ripped-off material. It takes them even less time to decide not to rip stuff off in the first place. Hey, look! Nothing draconian involved.
Oh, you mean the draconian measures required when someone has had it pointed out to them that they're ripping off someone's work to avoid paying for the marketing material they're using in their own money-making activities and refuse to stop? The only thing that could make that draconian is the deliberate action of the person ripping off the work. It's a self-inflicted wound, and so no, "we" can't all agree on anything at all resembling what you're saying.
Two justices thought that it was constitutional for police to randomly search through your cell phone, though it seems they did not publish an opinion as to why.
A full report of this ruling should include the justification for such a ruling. I would love to read it!

I am not concerned with the quality of my friendships. I am concerned with the quality of the computer security practiced by those friends.
How many compomised computers are there in the world? How many successful Facebook phishing campaigns have there been? The trackrecord of my friends asking for computer support because they didn't know what they were doing is alarming. I think that my personal security policy will remain unchanged because of this option: only trust ME!
You're right... but it's still really frustrating. I made a rather mild comment really. And I lose my Excellent Karma status because of the self-righeous...
Fine! That's great in fact. It's called discourse. And it's a good thing. What irks me is the self righteous modders that will call you a troll because they disagree with your emotion.
But on the copyright lobby... ok, so what. They speak out. Let's say they're even lying. Ok. I'll grant you that. What does that have to do with my right to express disgust over excessive protesting that often achieves the wrong outcome?
What really frustrates me about the moding system, is that strong disagreement with my statements is enough to call me a troll. What is wrong with commenting on the excessive amount of protest that RMS does on every subject? Another poster here pointed out that RMS has picked the wrong battle because forbidding DRM into the HTML5 protocol will increase the importance of Silverlight and Flash...
Too many Slashdot modders behave as if a strongly expressed emotion that disagrees with their emotion is wrong. It's not! It's valid human communication that says so much on its own. I shouldn't have to go into a lengthy argument every time I want to explain my disgust of over-protesting. I should have the right to express the emotion as a point of view without being chastize and labelled.
You're right. As a result of a civil case, I would expect him to have to pay back the money. But claiming he is a criminal is not necessary. We used to have the view in this country that anything which could be handled properly as a civil matter, SHOULD be handled as a civil matter.
Our legal system and law enforcement system has enough to deal with without imprisoning people over financial disputes.

On an only slightly related note, this article missed a huge chance to use one of the favorite words of geeks everywhere: "archenemy".
Ug, just when I'm out of mod points ...
+1 this please.

Take note Gnome team.
You can ride the bus. I'm decking mine out like a limo! =)
I guess what I meant to say is "self-driving flying-cars". They will also need to do the entire take-off and landing sequence flawlessly.
Our capabilities at self-flying commercial jets have not reached the perfection level necessary to do without well-trained pilots all together.
Wouldn't you suspect that, on the day when half of the "car" driving done in the country is done in the air, that any law which does not require extensive training for the pilot would be overturned?

I actually prefer the latter.

What's your plan to stop all torrents?

... that this goes to the US Supreme Court and they uphold this as the law of the land. The citizens of all states deserve that protection.

Sigh
What? You're actually debating me?

At least we now know which animals on the farm are more equal than others.
He's against DRM in HTML5? Why didn't I see this coming?
With the disgusting level of race baiting and race card playing, this topic is appropriate for ranting.
Yeah. I probably have nothing to add idea-wise to this story. Just had to chime in that I share this emotion.
What a relief to know that there are non-draconian administrators that can actually administer justice with grace instead of an iron fist.
Ok fine. My legal point about the trend of companies to force civil matters to be legal matters still stands.
