Gee, this whole time I thought that AMANDA stood for Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk Archiver. While the one in antarctica seems a bit cooler(pun intended), I bet we all find the one from maryland a bit more useful.

  2. Great tool for rapid prototyping on How Printable Computers Will Work · · Score: 1

I see this as a great opportunity for EE and CE profs to use in the classroom. A student could design a digital circuit, then literally print it out. This, or people in industry could have a quick tool to rapidly prototype a complex digital system.

I'm not sure what the cost of printing this stuff out is though. I suppose that FPGA's for the time being are cheaper in the long run if you're going to be making modifications all of the time. Except that FPGA's can get expensive when you blow em up.

My biggest hope is that using plastic processors wil make computers more recycleable. I could imagine a process in which you send your computer to the recycling center, where they melt it down and separate the plastic from the metal. We can only hope the next generation of computers is a lot more friendly to the environment than our current batch is...

  4. Computer Engineering on Computer Science vs. Computer Engineering? · · Score: 1

I just graduated with a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering this past spring. Yet, I am writing software.

As far as which degree you get sort of depends on what you want to do. My degree has steered me more in the direction of writing device drivers, although a CS person would be very well qualified to do that also. I personally don't think that I'm as qualified to write a full blown app, although I do write utilities for our driver.

I'm glad that I went with ECE over CS, because it exposed me to a lot more than just Data Structures, algorithms and Operating systems(all classes that I took anyway). I learned about DSP, Digital and Analog Electronics, communications, control systems, power electronics, etc. IMHO Computer Engineering should allow you to do anything that a CS major can do, but will allow you the flexibility to really do what you want.

There is really a lot of software that needs to be written that requires knowledge of a field beyond CS. I didn't really think about how cool algorithms were until I started doing DSP stuff. That's when it's really nice to know about the hardware, discrete math and all of that other crazy stuff that ECEs do. Well, that's my take on it anyway.

Have a great college career no matter what you choose!

  7. b&w speakers rule on What Audio System Powers Your Home Theater? · · Score: 1
I've got myself a small pair of b&w dm601 bookshelf speakers, powered by a rotel 60W high current amplifier. I've got a Carver preamp and a Rega Planet CD player. I love the b&w's because the gold kevlar weave on the woofer just looks awesome, especially when you turn up the volume a lot.

With a good quality amp, you can turn the volume up all the way and still have great sound quality. These aren't the best for super low frequency ranges, but have incredible punch. Get one of the larger versions of these, maybe the 603 or 604, or combine it with a good sub. The 601's would probably make a good set of surround speakers for an incredibly loud theater.

I'd say the two most important components are the speakers and the power amplifier. Be sure that you get good quality components here. Good luck in the quest for the ultimate theatre/stereo!
