  1. Fit for purpose? on Microsoft Advises to Type in URLs Rather than Click · · Score: 1

    I think not.

  2. Re:The problem I have with trains on First UK On-Train WiFi Service Launches Monday · · Score: 1

Lets hope the drivers don't catch on - lets face it they have enough to worry about on our railways without doing IM on their PDA at the same time ;)

  3. Re:The real cost... on First UK On-Train WiFi Service Launches Monday · · Score: 4, Funny

Fact is you could probably *walk* next to the train and get a decent connection... 5MPH seems to be about the average speed of a UK train these days, that's if a train turns up at all...

Nice to see GNER have got their priorities straight - the state of our railway system leaves a lot to be desired and I'm sure the money could be better spent - and that's from a geek with as much wireless tech as anyone else :)

  4. Re:Inquiring minds must know... on What Software Do Cable Installers Place on Your PC? · · Score: 1

I use NTL cable over here in the UK, which also comes with the broadjump software. Luckily for me, NTL defaults to 'self-install', and you pay more for the techs to set up your own PC.

The 'BJ' software (ironic eh?) is not necessary at all, it just provides a local interface to the initial system (MAC Addy) registration and provides status/testing tools for the connection once its installed and working.

Needless to say I didn't even break out the CD ;)

  5. Is ReiserFS really a Journalling filesystem? on ResierFS In Latest 2.4.1 Prepatches · · Score: 1

If you look at the section on Reiserfs at

    http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/articles/issue6/lu6-All _you_need_to_know_about-Filesystems.pdf

It suggests that Reiserfs is not (yet) a true Journalling file system. Here's what it says:

Reiserfs uses a scheme called 'preserve lists' to update metadata, ensuring that metadata isn't overwritten directly - this reduces the risk of inconsistencies occuring in event of a crash. (Reiserfs isn't a true Journalling filesystem, although journalling extrnsions have been pre-announced.)

    what say ye?

    Take a look at

I read the hard copy version, which gave a very good rundown of the available filesystems. Hope this helps

  7. Extradirectional Transmission System (ETS) on Enter The 'Stupid Patent Tricks' Contest · · Score: 1

In addition to the age-old forward-or-reverse transmission systems installed in most mechanically powered vehicles, the Extradirectional Transmission System defines a paradigm shift in the way such vehicles can move.

Two new 'gears', known as Left and Right (collectively known as Sideways Gears)allow for movement perpendicular to the traditional direction of travel.

The aim of ETS is to make 'parking' and other similar manoevers much simpler, and to allow vehicles to be parked much closer together. In turn this will increase the available roadside parking spaces by up to 30%.
