Before you buy make sure you can exchange parts (like ram, and disk drives); have cheap S&H and good prices. The best source of this information is ResellerRatings.com.
I personally use the same vendors most often but will use pricewatch to find deals when buying individual parts. my Fav vendors are:
ever notice that most of your case is empty space?? This is because the atx motherboard is a 12x9 rectangle. Why not break the north and southbridges out into seperate boards like the SBLIVE doughtercard. that way you could put half the mb on the floor of a case and shink the height by half???? Or even stack the two mbs on top of eachother on slidable racks? Also they could break the power supply out of the case to save sppace and increase cooling!
"...of at least 6000 years ago" If i recall didn't a geologist use water levels to date the Sphinx at 10000yrs old+ due to the water erosion on the original stones. Perhaps this is why the city is underwater as well?
I think that the follow ups to the sequel will be embraced by fans. We are all, unavoidably, comparing the first scini-series to the movie(s), (which i still enjoy).
Granted the scenery and attention to mysticism was better in the movie but Sc-Fi's Dune is a different world alltogether.
The new Dune is more sc-Fi than the movie. By that I mean, we see the classic bright sharp lines that movies like 2001 showed us. I do admit that i preferred the dark ancient feeling that Lynch showed me, but I also enjoy this interpretation. Overall this visual interpretation boils dow to this:
Things I liked better in Lynch:
Navigators
Scenery
Dream Sequences
Worm
Things I liked better in Sci-Fi
Baron
Space Ships
Shields
Fremen Eyes
As for the script, I think that Lynch had a deeper feel but Sci-Fi has more time to develop this. For instance we begin to see the mysticism of Dune through water in the Arakis headquarters when the wet rags are collected. They also demonstate how the non-Fremen are not as mystical as they splash water on the floor (an obviously elitist act). If you notice only Lady Jessica mentions this. This also demonstrates how the Bene Gesserit have ancient roots. Sci-Fi is slowly bring out a sharp contrast between 'Believers' and the rest of the lansraad.
I hope my suspicions are correct and that tonight we will see the seeds of mystery unfold. Unlike Lynch who had to spill the beans all at once due to time constraints.
Actually, I really dug chapterhouse and was sad that the series couldn't continue. The figures farmer couple that finished the book reminded me of the Brin's uplift series and the orders of life. The Tyrant was only one road in the evolution of man. I would have liked to see what Herbert's vision of what the different school's would have evolved humanity into.
Maybe I have 'little awareness that everybody isn't as technologically-inclined, -equipped or advanced as' myself. Despite that possibility, it appears that the rapid growth of technology (insert cliche) or paradigm shifts coupled with the internet has made this a moot point.
How can one hinder the rate at which technology emerges? If governments intervened when any opensource code came out saying...'This is to advanced' who here would not pissed off? The same can be said for any technology. By holding back innovation to allow the masses to catch up we ultimately squash the desire to innovate. Besides, how can you stop the application of ideas? Look at the dude (sorry forgot his name) who built the 'Super Gun' for Iraq. He had the idea of launching satellites into space with very large guns. The US refused to fund him so Hussein gave him funding to build a military version. Some would say he did a bad thing. I say he did what he had to for a passion that needed to be sated. Seriously, I would kill someone if I knew it would get us to Mars that much faster, would you?
Unfortunately some people will always be technologically ignorant as has been the case throughout history. Rather than hindering technology, society should try and raise technological awareness through technology. (yeah, yeah catch22 but you need a flame to build a fire!
People who see the future before it happens are driven to it like moths to the flame, perhaps blindly. Nonetheless, the momentum they create is powerful and only slowed by tremendous pressure. Galileo, Copernicus, and other giants suffered for this drive and still their names ring truer than any Pope or inquisitioner. We cannot allow the masses to make that suffering for naught.
What you state is correct but you are neglecting the fact that the article is raising the issue of a corporate run world without the power residing in the governments hands.
Thus lobbying power would be meaningless and so would gag orders.
The only recourse to stopping the masses would have to be murder, coersion and other deplorable acts which would be VERY difficult to cover up with the widespreade use of the internet.
Sure, we like to say that all mega-corp.'s are evil entities that want to exploit the masses but one must remember that their is competition among these giants; Competition that could drive them to be better cleaner nicer companies.
As an outsider it appears that government regulations do not curb these beasts as much as public opinion.
Cosmetic companies stop using animals to test only because that cute sticker sells more shampoo and mcDonald's doesn't use styrofoam because the hippie freaks would protest and drive away business.
We like to think this country is a democracy that listens to the public where the reality is that this is a republic that listens to the lobbies.
At least the corporations listen to their customers and that is thier weakness.
A boycott is more effective against corporations than elections are for politicians (they end up as lobbyists).
As an atheist I am appalled by the notion that politics should be even discussed in a church! Not only does that exclude people like me in the process but it gives an unfair advantage to more popular religions. Separation of church and state is a good thing! btw is anyone else pissed off at the fact that every politician has to mention GOD in every other sentence?
The notion that a free for all cyberdemocracy would be much different is crazy. Our founding fathers warned of the tyranny of the masses and a cyber democracy could prove to be just that.
Fanatic individuals have the ability to yell louder than the next man making their voices more powerful in the political realm. IE The right to lifers only represent a minority of republicans yet a candidate can not be nominated without being pro-life!.
The shift to Cyber-Democracy would only make these lobbies go Cyber as well. Lobby Spam could sway many politicians and recruit fellow zealots the same as today.
What is lacking in politics is the ability to create equal time and exposure to political ideas. In order to do that, large funded campaigns would have to be limited to the amount of exposure they recieve on the web to equate with smaller poorly funded 'Grass Roots' movements.
But this would mean that we are back to square one because a committe would have to approve which candidates or issues are viable limmiting the masses to the same A,B(maybe c and d too) vote.
The only solution to fair government is a Super Cyborg designed to govern compassionatly and without bias!
I was thinking about why the government is so inefficient. It occured to me that the federal programs are not accountable to anyone; which causes them to go about their business whith the inginuity of voice mail system.
For instance, a traditional libertarian would argue that welfare is inherantly flawed and a misuse of government. But welfare provides a service that profits all corporations....A consummer base. If welfare was a privatised institution that didn't rest on its laurels as being an altruistic institution but stated its goals honestly It could recieve funding from multiple sources.
Furthermore, the organizations are not composed of people who use the services themselves. When the department of education makes a decree as to lunches or religion in schools they should be influenced by the people who actually have children in school not some old f*rt who thinks we will all go to hell cuz we are the grandchildren of a monkey!
I know I am rambling but my point is this- Policy should be determined by those who are affected by it not by those who think they know better. And the benifits of the programs should be advertised as such not shoved under our noses as a neccessary evil/good.
The libertarian platform can be just as diverse as any other party. The main concept is that the individual should have the right to do anything that does not harm anyone but himself. Thus liberty. As a result that means less government interference. Some libertarians might go as far as you but then again some environmentalists think humans should be extinct to preserve the planet. The point is there is such a thing as a moderate libertarian!
I have voted libertarian since I was 18! As a result, most people ridicule me for throwing away my vote.
On the other hand this roundtable is exactly why they are throwing away their vote. Third parties are hands on they allow for their constituents to voice their issues and you know what those issues are.
My candidate might not win but at least I am sure that he is in politics for IDEAS and not for a career move!!!!!!
So next time someone accuses you of throwing your vote away ask that person when was the last time you voted for a guy and he accomplished anything he set out to do?
Complexity theory seems to be another word for chaos theory. In chaos theory the fist assumption one makes is that the system is not perfectly chaotic, thus it is 'merely' complex. The second condition is that the initial conditions are well known.
The genetic algorithm is a bottom up approch to the same conditions. Given an initial condition and a well known ideal goal find the best solution. Thus, the algorithm creates order from chaos through chaos.
I would go so far as to say that complexity, chaos, and the genetic algorithm are all subsets the same discipline.

Cod-Fish Will Conquer the UNIVERSE...Sure
on
The Regulon
·
· Score: 1
"Exponentiality is fatality,"...[cod fish] would cover the earth unless something stopped it.
Actually over time the separated populations would begin to evolve into seperate species unless the cod fish depended on another spieces to survive. In that case the Cod Fish would have died out before conquering the world since their food source or symbiotes would have died too or could not exist in every ecosystem on earth.
I think that Lemming (the real animal) should be talked about first however. Lemmings have population booms every so often. When this occurs the Lemmings to proceed all of the vegitation in the tundra focing them to move as one entity searching for food until they reach the ocean or another large body of water. At this point the Lemmings will follow one another to a watery grave. This cycle goes on continually, mass suicide. Creepy huh?.
Anyway, my point is that you can't assume an ecosystem will not develop its own predators when the predator could even be itself. Every system is finite (except for the universe which is defined as infinite) thus eventually the Regulon run out of 'cyber-eco-space' (can't think of a better word).
In concrete terms, Information needs to physically stored on harddisc, cd-rom, memory or anyother future technology. Thus the physical world's storage devices must grow at the same rate as the amount of information that exists for the Regulon to grow. This is impossible, thus the Regulon will constrain itself thru evolution into multiple species like the cod fish would, or naturally kill off itself searching for resources like the lemming.
