Okay, what this article is really saying is that President Obama took office after the largest emergency budget expenditure in U.S. history. One that pushed the deficit up from President Bush's average of $305 billion to over $1.4 trillion. Largely due to a 1 time $1 trillion dollar bailout of the U.S. and global banking system.

Then he lauds President Obama for only having an average of $1.2 trillion dollar deficit. Exclaiming, see...see... President Obama lowered the deficit from $1.4. Reducing the deficit by almost 15%.

What Mr. Ungar fails to point out, is that President Obama kept spending at emergency levels. Take out that one time emergency expenditure and compare the average deficits.

What you see is President Bush's $305 billion versus President Obama's $1,225 billion a year deficit.

So how much did President Obama increase the deficit spending? 400%

Even factoring the 2009 fiscal year with the bank bailout. President Bush's average deficit was $443 billion vs $1,163 billion (and that's assuming the 2013 ends with the smaller estimated $0.9 trillion deficit - have my doubts).

Even then, it equates to a 2.5x increase in deficit spending over President Bush.

And, remember that half a trillion of that 2009 budget was the emergency stimulus bill that President Obama passed.

  7. YOU'RE COMPLETELY WRONG on Tech Titans Oracle, Red Hat and Google To Help Fix Healthcare.gov · · Score: 1

President Obama has spent SIGNIFICANTLY MORE than ANY OTHER PRESIDENT.

You're comparing apples to oranges. President Obama had significantly lower "increase" in spending from the prior year before. Largely, because he came in afte the super-massive emergency trillion $+ banking bailout. That was a) a huge expenditure b) an emergency expenditure. What President Obama did was continue at the spending level every year since.

In other words, imagine your household expenditure is $50K. But you had a major illness requiring a $50,000 hospital surgery. So that year, your expenditure was $100K. The next year you spend $98K and exclaim you've reduced spending. But what you're not admitting is that you're factoring an emergency expenditure into the regular budget. Then later spending that same amount without an emergency expenditure.

    Bush Term 1
    $8.9 Expenditure
    $1.2 Deficit

    Bush Term 2
    $11.8 Expenditure
    $2.2 Deficit

    Obama Term 1
    $11.9 Expenditure
    $2.3 Deficit

Here is the key, ALL the deficits under President Bush were below $500 billion until 2009. 1/2 were around the $150-$300 billion. Three were around the $400-$450 billion. Then in 2009 we get a $1.4 trillion deficit thanks to the bank bailouts.

The deficits for every year of President Obama's 1st term exceed $1 trillion. While none were as high as the $1.4 during the banking crisis. Two were $1.3 trillion, and two were $1 trillion.

In other words, President Obama took an emergency situation that equated to an additional $1 trillion in deficit spending and made it standard. So yes, President Obama has "increased" spending less. But he has maintained "emergency" spending levels for every year of office.

  8. I am going to call BS... on Scientists Using Supercomputers To Puzzle Out Dinosaur Movement · · Score: 5, Interesting

I am always amazed at how much under-estimation of dinosaurs there is. Remember when we thought Tyranosaurus Rex was slow? Now, we estimate that it runs at what? up to 35 mph?

Now, I wonder what their model would predict the top speed of an Elephant to be? If you look at an Elephant and it's gait you'd think it slow. But it can reach top speeds of 25 mph. Guess what, if you compare an elephant to most other animals in a simulation. You would not conclude that they could hit 25mph. Why? Because elephants don't really run as other animals. They always have one foot on the ground. Their movement doesn't match. So if you said, take an elephant and model it to see if it can run. It would return back that it was incapable of running. When in fact, elephants have a modified gait that they use for higher speeds.

I'd wager the movement is akin to pogo'ing affect. If you've ever run with your knees locked, you'll understand what I mean. It's clearly not as fast as "running" but it can be faster than walking. But whatever, however, you want to describe it. An elephant exceeds the speeds a typical model would show it capable of.

Now, if you take these premises, and create a model. Your conclusions are going to be "fail". Why? Because you have limited knowledge. Take a large saurapod and model it after a running gait. It will show negative results. So you say, hey, let's see how it does with a more elephant like gait. Cause elephants don't really run, but they can charge at up to 25mph. Results fail. You now conclude that said giant beastie is only capable of 5mph walk.

YOU ARE WRONG!!!! Because you've predicted based on a model without understanding other forms of movement. Would 5mph be sustainable for the achievement of accessing food? avoiding predators? etc. In other words, can a 5mph speed sustain a giant saurapod's lifestyle?

Consider for a moment that many lizards when they run seem to not just use their legs, but rather bend their elongated bodies left and right creating a wiggle affect. Rather similar to what a snake does. It is not just the reach of the legs, but the shortening of the torso that affects the speed and movement of some lizards.

And it may very well be likely that a similar body function would allow greater speed. Most extremely slow moving creatures such as turtles, have a tendency to be armored and protected.

My gutt feels like they're missing an unknown aspect of mechanics. And that such creatures could probably reach at least 8-12mph

"They eventually "fixed" the problem by moving the brake and accelerator pedals further apart, and putting in a brake-gearshift interlock"

And let me point out, that it was also a significant change, and therefore would have had a different firmware for the electronics control module as well. All your statement proved is that they added some extra measures on the next version. But that the next version was modified, and thus the issue eliminated. There is no proof which resulted in the fix, the pedal change vs the electronics update.
