I don't understand whats that fear about public SSN in US?
I live in a country where everybody has a unique ID given at birth. All the ID's are public -> ie anybody can ask a national DB those questions:
Whats the name of ID 34567.
What are the possible ID's of name John Smith. The are and have not been (1) any privacy problems about this, because everybody knows what it is - its just an unique ID/number/.
(1) It does reveal a date of birth - its in a form of 37701026789 where 3 mean male born before 2000, 770102 is b-date, 6789 is random uniq "salt"
I've been reading slashdot stories about USian mobile providers for a while and i still don't understand.
Whats this thing that i had to sign up with provider X because i want a phone Y? So tell me what's the catch - is there no way to just buy a phone from the shop and sign a service contract with them? Do you have to rent it from your connection provider? Or lease it?
Why don't you just buy the phone you like and choose the provider you like?
In europe - where i'm from - it works like this: If you're not piss-poor, you buy a phone you want and choose a provider you like. If you're piss-poor, you sign some crappy contract with provider for some set time and they lease you a phone with some 200% markup.
Here excellent nokia models (400h standby time) start from about $80 here and will last for about 5 years at least- so surely it can't be the money issue...
Isn't that just writing mysql_pconnect instead of mysql_connect in php. And i'm quite sure that there's a Apache::Something module for mod_perl that does the same.
There are things that are present in some language and not in another. And i tend to think that it has an effect on how people think.
For example: In english there is no distinct word for free vs. free (beer vs. speech) In russian there is no distinct word for house vs. house (home vs. building) etc etc...
(Don't be rough on me - i'm sure there are special case words - but the average Joe or Ivan never uses them, and because of that probably don't grasp the full difference)
Clearly, you did not live in either Eastern bloc nor Soviet Union. Otherwise, you'd know the difference was enourmous. Trust me, i've seen both. It's like a difference between US and Cuba.
Naah, Finns are ofcourse Europids ( White ) as opposed to Caucasians ( Almost Black - see Armenians , Georgians, Turks etc.)

My 5 years old nokia 5110 can hold a charge for 8-9 days. And new nokias are supposed to be twice as good (400+ hours).
Not sure if they sell these beast in US tho.
* Full-sized station wagons, like the caprice-based one. Other than Mercedes & Volvo, does anyone make a full sized station wagon anymore?
In Europe- every carmaker i know. Including BMW, Audi, Ford(!), Opel, Subaru, Toyota, Honda etc etc etc.
Why not use them like new phones - like calling people and sending SMSes?
Why don't you just pick up the phone and ask wtf they are and what they want. Answering won't hurt you any way so whats the deal?

You should move to Prague. Excellent public transport. Runs all night too.
It could have something to do with language too.

Got any nice sources for these?
I just googled a bit and found insanely differing b.counts for both of them..
If you were a jew, you woduldn't.
Special case code : )
from wikipedia:
hitler death toll estimate ~1 - 6M dead
Stalin death toll estimate ~10 -50M dead
besides, i would've chose german occupation of my country over russian any day of the week

Just for comparison
.ee (Estonia, not that you've heard of it :)
In
512/128 cable is about 18$/month flat.
256/64 adsl is 18$/month flat.
When passing parked cars, i can hear if their car-alarm is activated. Only for some alarms tho, others are maybe of better quality/other frequencies.
There is an old proverb in *.ee
Locks are against wildlife. Humans will have no problems with them.
