    Similary to the complexity of flying something similar to the F-117. The computer that flys that plane makes multiple adjustments per second just to keep it airborn.

    Seriously though, plans like this are pretty ridiculous in the face of oil reserves that are going to last 150 more years at best and will become much more expensive to use long before.

    The problem we encounter is that I work in the Network Operations Center. People are there 24/7, which limits the activities we can do as a group. Infact I can't attend the IS&T christmas party this year cause i'm on the schedual....

    I think everyone should apply the microsoft free friday apache mod. If they are going to use their market share to destroy the competition, I think we should use the strong apache market share to fight back. After all last i checked apache was the number 1 web server.

    because you are sharing a databus with your neighbor and everyone else who happens to be on your local loop, congestion can lead to slowdowns. With a dsl, the local loop is dedicated, but you can still have congestion from the local loop through the rest of the network.

    You can run into congestion no matter what type of access you use, the disadvantage of a cable inet access is you can also have congestion problems on the local loop.

    this offends me. the united states gives more to the world peace than any other nation. we act like the world police force. we help people in need, we do everything in our power to assist other nations. We try to help every way we know how, and this is the thanks we get. this should be a wake up call, but not one which shows us that should respect the world, we already respect the world. This wakeup call should prove that the world does not give us the same respect that we give them.

    At the college I attend, they reboot the NT servers every morning before students get there, and hope that they don't lock up during the day.

    At work, our NT servers autoreboot every friday evening because before they started that they would lock up throughout the week.

    Our unix openview server has been up for over 400 days. the last time it was taken down was to replace a fan that was going bad.

    I'll let you make your own decisions, but those facts tell me a lot about the dependability of NT.

    Yes, this is offtopic, but i have to point out the obvious.

    The Chevette might have more HP, it may have more displacement. sure its rear wheel drive.

    Yes rear wheel drive is more fun to drive.
    Yes a honda engine sounds like a weedwhip.
    Yes the Chevette would be more fun, sound better, and has the benifit of kicking it sideways around corners. but you cannot argue the fact that the Prelude would outhandle you. Espically if its the vtech. I have owned a prelude, and it was the best handling car i have ever owned. I do like my Trans Am much better, however is will admit in shame that yes i owned a honda, and yes it did handle better than my T/A.

    Maybe this will help the people that live in rural areas, where cable company's don't venture, and the closest C.O. is more than the maximum 15,000(give or take a few thousand feet depending on the vendor) foot limit. Living in a rural area myself, this gives me some hope at achieving more than a modem connection before 2020.

    yes, you may get payed for fixing it, but i find that if i set up a server, network, or workstation and have done a good job, i don't like to see it not working. I already put the time and effort into optimizing it, to allow somone else to destroy 'my system' is not something i would be very willing to let happen. just because you get paid to go back and fix it doesn't mean that you should encourage an opportunity to grant somone access that would allow them to destroy your work.

    on the other hand, i have been in the other tech's position, the only difference is that i knew what i was doing, and the vendor that installed the machine would not give out the root password. i just accpeted it, and call them every time there is a problem. if they arn't going to make it easy for me, than i'm not going to make it easy for them.

    I personally, think this is very worthy news. It affects everyone who uses LCD's. And I'm pretty sure that the majority of /. users have LCD's somewhere in their life. Think of all the time that your laptop is on, while you are writing down notes, reading a manual, etc. How many times have you wanted just 10 more minutes of battery time to finish something up? Many of you are questioning the relevance of LED's, but you have to remember that its the little things that count.

    I have to say that 110db isn't that loud. I can hit 140db. but i do have enough respect to turn it down when i'm driving through a residential area at night. I just wish that they would have the same respect for me when i'm sleeping in the middle of the day cause i work 3rd shift, but instead they mow their lawn, blast their radio, and allow their kids to scream and run around. wait....thats unreasonable, isn't it. asking someone to be quiet during their normal day, from 10am-9pm. hmmm, i sleep from 9am-5pm. my normal day is from 5pm until 9am. so is it fair to ask me to turn down my stereo, or not ride my atv during my normal day? but i still turn down my stereo, because I know what it's like to be woken up while i'm asleep. and i have enough respect to not do that to others.

    I don't know about you, but part of the reason I like linux is because I have to do things to make it work. I don't simply click the install icon that popus up when the cd runs its autostart. the only reason linux is requires more input(work) to get the same output(desktop, program, etc) is because thats what linux users want. I like watching the text that scrolls by during bootup. I like being able to configure the system without gui. If linux was as easy to use as M$ products, i wouldn't like it as well. linux is more challenging, thats why i, and the majority of linux users like it.
