Every year I see articles about how COBOL programmers are in high demand and companies are scrambling to hire them. But I learned COBOL and liked it and regularly keep my eye out for COBOL jobs. In the past 15 years I have seen a grand total one one COBOL placement within 1,000 miles. I call BS on the article, the local job boards are all for Java, C++, mobile languages and PHP. Not a COBOL position in sight.
You're obviously not a part of the Order of the Secret Knights of COBOL. The OSKCOBOL cabal keep all those lucrative COBOL jobs hidden from prying eyes of interferers. Let me know when you know the secret handshake and we'll open up the cushy job market of $500,000 per anum COBOL jobs to you.
Indeed. Probably the easiest language I ever had to learn. I'm sure I've mostly forgotten it now because I've never used it since I learnt it in University (besides converting some old Cobol to VB6 a long time ago... but that was reading not writing).
Whereas, I agree, stopping "70"ft sea rises with levees or any current known/predicted technology would be impossible, I still think we should be preparing for the one+ meters we can safely say will probably hit in the next 50 or so years.
If it ever got as bad as 70ft- let the people in the future decide what to do about that, we can't, and we can't accurately say it will be that bad. If it ever reached even a fraction of 70ft whole cities would have to be migrated (assuming we don't have some super amazing technology that holds the sea back with magnetic walls ).
We can protect major population centers from the immediate future if we start now. Problem is, certain politicians make it a political point to say global warming isn't happening, so they don't make moves to protect what we can protect.
Must be a Southern thing then. I've worn a suit to every interview I've been on in the States. Everyone I've seen come in for an interview has always worn a suit. Honestly, even though I think dress codes are silly (well... with certain obvious exclusions), because everyone wears a suit for an interview here; if I were interviewing and someone didn't show up with one on, I'd probably draw conclusions about "lack of effort" etc... because it is the norm. If I lived where apparently a lot of you slashdotters do, in areas where suits aren't normal for interviews, I wouldn't take that same stance.
Obviously women don't wear suits. Women always have more freedom in dress codes though. Even after they start work certain things don't apply to them. Like, men can't wear shorts, but women can wear skirts that are the same length that mens shorts would be. Women don't need to wear collared shirts. They wear something that I would call a Tshirt- but they give it a fancy name like "blouse" or some other women's clothing term that really means tshirt. Women can wear open toed shoes... but you can bet if a man showed up in sandals people would complain.
They probably only put in as much fuel as they need. If you're only flying a short distance you don't fill the tanks all the way. You don't want much excess fuel because that adds to weight which adds to fuel consumption. Excess fuel = more costs for airline.
I'm sure the not requiring refueling means they intend to replace batteries when it lands rather than recharge them.
Battery Pack on ground is charged before flight touches down. When plane lands- old battery taken out- new battery put in- plane takes off and old battery is recharged.
Now, some might say that is STILL refueling, but theoretically it could probably be done a lot quicker than sticking a hose in the plane and filling up the tanks that way.
That means range might not be as great, it doesn't mean the technology is infeasible, it means to start with it would be limited to medium range flights.
It's impossible to predict what CO2 levels will be in 200-500 years or what technologies will be available. I've not heard any legitimate source predicting 70ft sea level rises this century. I don't think worrying what will happen in 500 years time is worthwhile right now considering it's pie-in-the-sky.
500 years ago, European's had just started training with China. I don't think they could have predicted the relative near short-term future where they'd be forced to import Opium, let alone, Apple, Android, the tech revlolution, or that they'd be supplying Walmart with everything on their shelves 500 years later.
We have a decent guess for the next 50 years- we know the challenges we face in the short-medium term. We should focus on that.
I have three kids- and two of mine would need written directions or need to know the concept of flour and sugar and the other wouldn't. My eldest and youngest are extremely book smart. Lazy as crap- but really booksmart. They can read a book quickly and memorise a substantial portion of it. They do great in school (for now) because reading and learning from books comes naturally.
My middle child does OK, but only because she has the work effort of both my other kids combined * 3. She has trouble reading- but has a great "picture" memory. However, she does something with her hands once- she remembers it for life. We can drive down a street she's only been on once and that was years ago, and she can tell you in detail what houses we are going to pass and when, and describe features about them. Her visual and spatial memory is incredible even if she can't learn well from books.
If she bakes a cake once, she'll remember how to do it. If she reads a recipe she'll get confused and screw it up. However "doing" the act of baking and she'll remember it for life.
The other two, no way they will remember anything about baking, they will need the recipe, and although they might read and remember the recipe short term in a split second- but they'll give up before it's time to add the sugar because it's "taking too much time" and it's "too much work"- they also won't remember how to do it by the next day.
You're right, it is two different issues. There is one group who is purely after curbing illegal immigration and that's really their only concern. Then there is another group who tag along with curbing illegal immigration, but their real motivation is keeping out people of different culture, religion or skin colour.
Being opposed to illegal immigration doesn't necessarily make one part of the second group. But everyone part of that second group is also part of that first group. That second group isn't negligible either. I hear comments on an almost daily basis from people bashing the Mexicans (and all Hispanics are Mexican to them) demanding that they go back home, and other such comments.
Yes the climate is changing. Yes it's caused by Humans. No it can't be fixed.
It is impossible to change or reverse. Sorry - we can't stop murdering each other as it is. How can we stop global warming? Answer. We can't.
Just plan for the inevitable and stop screaming the sky is falling. O.L.D. F.*.C.K.I.N.G. N.E.W.S.
Ughh
I don't think global warming can be stopped, at least not without doing things that are worse than global warming. However, there are some simple things that can be done to slightly lessen the impact of global warming.
However, I do think what we need to do, is start spending on infrastructure for the side-effects of global warming. The most obvious one, is protecting coastal cities better from rising sea levels. Less obvious ones would be increasing our sewage and storm water run off capacities. In general, warmer air means more severe weather events. Things like flooding events will become more common. Cities will need better run offs or face costly damage. I wish people would put politics aside and focus on preparing our cities and not working retroactively after massive flooding.
"To bake a cake you first have to understand terms such as flour, butter, milk" - Einstein (paraphrased)
He's wrong, you could bake a cake without understanding those terms, you just couldn't follow a recipe without understanding those terms. A child with no concept of language could watch her parent make a cake and duplicate the steps without knowing what "flour" meant.
The polo shirt is becoming more acceptable in the South East now. When I first started here it was rather fringe whether it was accepted or not instead of a button down. A polo made you stand out as looking casual. Now, polos are very common, I'm even beginning to see people start wearing those polyester wicking polos that look very un-business like... so things are changing even in the South East.
I am on the East Coast which probably explains the difference. I wouldn't dream of going to a job interview without a suit on.
Another thing that might make a difference, the last time I worked for a software company was around Y2K, since then I've worked at banks, and the offices for factories, and hospitals and other places where the general workforce had to dress semi-neat so they made the developers dress semi-neat too.
The one difference is techies- the people that deal with the hardware, and lugging people's PCs to them, etc. They've been allowed to wear jeans at a couple of places I've worked... developers though, we're treated the same as Accounts Receivable, HR, or any of the other departments and required to wear semi-professional looking attire. I'm sure if I were to work at a purely software based outfit, even here on the East Coast things would be less strict.
I don't know about that. The least strict place I've worked (could wear any pants or jeans, just not shorts. Tshirts were acceptable if they were plain didn't have any graphics or words on them) was also the most incompetent. The place I work now is comparable to the last 5 or 6 places I've been, slacks and a shirt with a collar and is probably the most competent place I've been.
1) At home I have to worry about ruining my carpet if I spill my drink. At the cinema I can splash it around without worrying about making my floor sticky. 2) It gets dark in the cinema so I can see my phone screen really well. This makes it great for texting or looking at the list of contacts to pick someone to call. 3) Sometimes the movie screen makes a great photo op. I love to stand up with my budies and take a selfie. 4) It's a great place to catch up on gossip. I can talk with my friends about who is seeing who and oh my god, what they did last weekend. 5) You can put your feet up. The seat in front makes a great footrest. 6) I can leave the kids at home and make out with my lover in the middle of the cinema without the kids bothering me asking for beer and crap. 7) Or, I can take my kids, let them scream their heads off- I don't have to worry about someone complaining to the Home Owners Association about how much noise the kids are making. 8) Watching other people's expressions when saying things like "oh my god, like, this guy on the left is about to be killed by a man who smashes through the window unexpectedly". Dropping spoilers and watching strangers get mad is like, the bomb.
Why do we fall for charismatic narcissistic candidates?
I blame the illegal immigrants for that.

How long will it be before this card is available at Big Lots for $5. I might be able to get one then.
I can explain why we don't do that with one word.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

I work in New York. Unless you're in finance, this isn't true. Even then, its mostly not true. Not even the CEO wears a suit.
I bet the CEO does for an interview. Which is the only time most people wear a suit here.
Why would anyone look at Mars to see if the Sun is getting hotter, when you can directly look at the Sun ?
Teacher told me to never look directly at the sun.
Canadians are mostly white. I'm sure the white Canadians will be welcomed by those trying to curb immigration in the US.
I'm an immigrant, but because I look white, I don't get much ire directed at me. I'm sure you Canadians will be equally welcomed.
Really. Isn't this getting old and tired.

Wow, so he was an authoritarian fascist who won the election without winning the popular vote!
If they're standing at the Magnetic North Pole it would still rise in the East.

Here are the reasons I love going to the Cinema.
Dropping spoilers and watching strangers get mad is like, the bomb.
. Who the hell stopped watching a movie to pay the electric bill?!
Anyone who was watching "Howard The Duck" and had an electric bill due in the next month.
