I've found small Welsh village names are easy to remember- look random- and don't appear in the dictionary. I use them for low-security sites that I don't access often and don't care too much if they get hacked.

For things I really want to protect I use a random combination of letters numbers and symbols.

  3. Facebook too entrenched on James Whittaker: Focus on Ads and 'Social' Destroying Google · · Score: 2

When Google took over search engines- there were other companies at play- but no-one had an emotional attachment to them.

Now Google wants to take over social media- but Facebook is entrenched. It's different than conquering the search world because Facebook has an emotional value for people- and the less technical people that anchor it are less likely to switch than the early adopters of the internet that switched to Google's search engine.

Going social and creating Google+ was a good idea too late for Facebook. If they wanted to do it they should have done it before every non-techie auntie and granny had it.

(I still refuse any social network of that ilk)

It does seem odd I agree.

The UK a year or so back signed a bizarre extradition treaty with the US a year or two back that allowed exactly this kind of thing.

US really does want to police the world... and tax the world too- and the two things (tax, extradition) and probably linked. US expects citizens to pay taxes to the US government... even if they don't live there. If you live in Denmark, for example, but are a US citizen- the US expects you to pay income taxes to them as well as Denmark. (they have treaties with many countries which mean lower-paid paid people don't get double-taxed- it's mainly the rich they're trying to get).

And... get this... if you renounce your citizenship- you can still be extradited for tax evasion because they can change you with renouncing your citizenship to avoid paying taxes.

The next step of course is the US will start granting citizenship to random rich foreigners (who didn't ask for it) to get income tax from them.

A company needs to know what its resources are- what it's limitations are- and how to balance them. Google has the finances to hire the expertise to do many things right... most companies do not. If you don't have the resources to do something properly- and you can't afford to hire the resources to be able to do something properly- you have no right pursing every little thing that floats on by.

It's often better to do one thing well than a dozen things poorly.

You are on vacation. You should escape the ties to your phone. Bring your phone, keep it off except for an Emergency during the day. When you are at the hotel, use the Wi-Fi available.

That's my thought too. When I'm on vactaion last thing I want is people being able to access me. There again, vacations are extremely rare for me- last time I took more than two consecutive days off was probably 4 or 5 years ago. The CEO's response was "We're a solutions company... we provide solutions."
