You all mocked the airlines- but turns out they were right.
Using electronic devices on planes IS dangerous.
On a more serious note- wonder if any airlines will take this too far and completely ban cell-phones/smart phones etc from being carried on to the plane.
However- we're both young- both early 30s- whereas a vasectomy is sometimes reversible- it isn't 100%.
If God forbid something happened to our kids or my wife- I can seea scenario where I might want to have kids again- or have kids with a new wife if something bad happened to my wife,
An IUD is at least reversible and a better idea in my mind.
I'm not saying Yucky is going to beat Google- so far the reviews are showing that Yucky is crap... but they could potentially improve... unlikely- but possible.
And if you compare 2003 (30 billion emails a day) to 2006 (60 billion emails a day) 2009 (240 billion emails a day) and 2010 (290 billion emails a day).
You can clearly see that # of e-mails going up is increasing. The trend is more e-mail not less.
Spam has made up about 90% of email for several years now.
You mention Fukushima - other than the usual fringe quacks prattling on (as they were before the incident), and some people being even more convinced that Nukular is Teh Eeevil, what actual effect has it had on people? Has it changed anyone's mind? Affected the way we go about our lives? Changed foreign or domestic policy? Not in my experience.
In the US it prompted an entire governmental review of our entire nuclear program and all nuclear sites.
In France, one of the worlds most nuclear friendly countries, and in Germany, it started protest marches against nuclear power.
Germany went so far as to plan to completely remove nuclear power from its portfolio as soon as possible.
In Britain, several men were arrested outside the Windscale plant not long after- perhaps because the police were overly sensitive about the nuclear disaster still.
So- yes, it had an impact- less so in the US than in Germany- but worldwide it caused governments to review their power sources.
Just like one day of attacks using planes completely altered flight for ever- one day of "nuclear" disaster caused worldwide change.
Who knows what a dirty bomb would do.
and- science or not... surely the media would be linking it to cancer in the children for decades.
All that is true. However the amount of terror it would cause with the general population is quite significant when compared to a dirty bomb (whole purpose of terrorism).
If you think about the fukushima incident where people in the US were needlessly buying iodine pills.
A dirty bomb would cause a much bigger panic amongst people- it wouldn't just be a few overly paranoid individuals. It would be a lot of overly paranoid individuals.
The average terror plot doesn't really affect that many people physically- it is about the mental impact on the population as a whole. A dirty bomb would give a nation a big mental black eye.
Yeah, I was buying cell-batteries the other day and the retailer wanted me to enter a facebook user and password so it could automatically insert a facebook comment that I had purchased batteries from them.
I remember thinking - WhyTF would I do that? Who on earth would want to post mundane information about what they buy online? IRS would looove to get a hold of their facebook profile no doubt.
Yes, they have alternate ways of tracking you and getting your information- but if you don't sign up for facebook you get more spare time, and less privacy stolen.
If you already are a member- quit now before you give away some other facet of your life.
Honestly- we all know how evil they are by now- so why do people keep using them? Is it really worth giving away every piece of information of your life just to play crappy games (that most slashdotters could write a better version of in an evening).
I'm really not worried; at the speed the DMV moves, we'll have already lost to China in WWIII and have a Chinese ID card (and number) long before they manage to actually sell my American SSN.
The core would have to be quite large for sunlight to reach all the way down. Plus windows looking inwards wouldn't have the same psychological effect as windows on the outside world.
Still, an interesting idea.
As well as natural light- I'd want 3d large high definition "windows" on plasma screens broardcasting a live video feed of the outside. That way my office could be located anywhere in the world.
Some places, such as the above doubtless exist- although I think most urban centres don't have caves or mines nearby (or if they did have probably been filled in.
From what you say above though- sounds like they already HAVE taken advantage of the mines.
As an interesting aside; back in Britain, the crown jewels were hidden in the salt mines near Northwich during WWII (allegedly).
1) Interesting to see if this truly is more energy efficient- using the ground to keep temperatures stable... less need to heat/cool. Less fossil fuel burnt?
2) All the ground displaced from projects such as these can be used to build levys to protect us from floods associated with global warming.
No soup for you Merck!
How about they cut the facebook page in half and give each Merck a half.

Real men get snipped, it's the lesser men that refuse to.
Thank Goodness not all men are real then or the species would die out. ;)
See... you almost had me convinced to get one done until you told me the tootsie pop was grape flavour.
I can risk the low-potential for impotence and inability to reach the "o"- but I can't risk getting a grape tootsie-pop over a different flavour.
If we wanted a permenant solution. Yes.

Awesome I'm going to connect my jewels to the web!
Maybe then my wife won't keep pestering me to get snipped.
I know this gem is hidden somewhere in the Kindle source.

Coming soon .. "Mosquito takes on lion"
Sometimes Mosquitos carry Malaria.
I'm not saying Yucky is going to beat Google- so far the reviews are showing that Yucky is crap... but they could potentially improve... unlikely- but possible.
/ no idea if Lions can catch Malaria.
Yes... the boycott of places like Cuba and North Korea has been very successfull.

Sorry- I should clarify- 50billion more per day. Not total.
If e-mail is irrelevant why is the number sent going up?
Not that "about" is a relevant source but it is the first I found:
http://email.about.com/od/emailtrivia/f/emails_per_day.htm
There were 50 billion more e-mails in 2010 than 2009. Sure most of them were for enlarging body parts... but still- it is not a dead medium.

Yes- but if you don't go to the DMV you can't be entered into the public lottery that everyone craves:
Jury duty.

The best way to avoid facebook getting your info:
DO NOT SIGN UP FOR FACEBOOK.
Perhaps the best thing to do is make EVERYONEs search data available to EVERYONE.
That way we're all on equal footing and may even find out that Grandma has the same interest in midgets as you.
I'm really not worried; at the speed the DMV moves, we'll have already lost to China in WWIII and have a Chinese ID card (and number) long before they manage to actually sell my American SSN.
Radon
Kills sea bugs... dead
According to the Merman religion they get 17 sturgeons in the afterlife if the die whilst killing the land people.
Not if the mermen militarise the plutonium and use it against the land people.
They're vicious SOBs down there.

Interesting from a global warming standpoint.
