Well, 10% of 600mb is a good chunk of time if you're downloading at 56k (but then again, what's another week?:) For big files, it's very worth it, but for those 50k tarballs, don't bother unless you're on a 300bps modem.
1) Moderators need more points, or more people need to be moderators. And I need to learn how to spell:/ Anyway, even browsing at a threshold of 2 is pretty pointless on many articles, as many very good posts never make it past 1, no less 3. And very, very rarely is there a 5, when there are comments that certainly deserve it.
2) Letting everyone see the moderation controls, but only letting them work for those who have points would just cause problems as people try to figure out if they have points, etc...
3) If straight AC posting (not logged in) goes away, there should be a time delay implemented for the creation of new accounts. Perhaps a 2 run-of-slashd delay (24 hour minimum) to prevent trolls from creating an account, hitting the bottom end of the moderation, then creating a new one and repeating.
4) ISP-based karma? This would balance out for the large ISPs, so trolls from AOL wouldn't cause problems for the decent users, etc.. But trolls on small ISPs, where the chance of other users reading slashdot is minimal I guess, wouldn't be able to do much damage and at the same time it'd take care of dynamic IP problems. If the DNS doesn't resolve, or you don't want to deal with the overhead, IP blocks would work just as well. Unfortunatley, if there's 2 trolls and a well-behaved user on one ISP, the trolls ruin it for the well-behaved user. One possible way around this is the karma clears after a few hours, so the well-behaved user can post normally again, and the trolls have probably given up and moved somewhere else.
Blah... How'd I get -10 karma? My posts average out to unmoderated (all 1s except a 0 and a 2, which average out). Oh well...

Well, I've gotten a 486DX2/50 running Linux decoding at 22.05KHz, mono... Had to disable damn near all the background processes though (updated, klogd, etc..)... Command line of mpg123 -m2 or something, forget what exactly it was.
All Omar did was submit a better looking set of pages to the person running the contest. What the person originally meant was similar to if you break in, change the page to something better please.
Sort of like saying "Just add yourself to/etc/passwd and make a home directory"
Heh... I was asking myself this very question not more than 48 hours ago, but I'm moving Linux to a -smaller- disk (400mb drive on the server, 100mb of it being used. Got a 200 sitting here).
What I'll end up doing is either taring all the files, or cping them. Directions of how to do either are above (And this article is now bookmarked:)
Kevin Mitnick, in short, is a political prisoner. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and has paid for it with over four years in jail without a trial. That's what makes this story significant to the community - that our government was, and still is, so ignorant of how computers and networks work, that they will imprison people for years and years without a trial because they don't understand.
Wait.. I thought the 4 years was because of Mitnick's ignorance when deciding "No, I don't want a speedy trial."
Cyrix 233MX processor, works fine under Linux. Amptron PM8600 Rev. B motherboard, never had a problem with it. Linksys EtherPCI II card, works fine under Linux (ne2kpci) Diamond Monster Sound MX200 card. Doesn't work under Linux, but the generic SBPro card that's also installed does. Diamond Monster 3D II card. Works fine under Linux. Western Digital hard drives, of course they work under Linux. Trident video card, don't feel like looking for the model. Works fine under Linux.
Nothing on this list is what I'd consider no-name. I'll be upgrading the Cyrix to a MII 300, since this motherboard only supports up to 262MHz processor speeds.
Ah, so THAT'S why my Windows 95, IE5, Outlook Express, FP98 box keeps crashing. I've installed too many (none) non-Microsoft programs on it. A BSOD pops up at LEAST every day I'm using it. IE5 likes finding new ways to die horrible deaths, and tries taking the entire system down with it. Today it was loading a Java applet that IE5's JVM didn't like, and it promptly took itself out, along with the rest of the system (Not BSOD, persistant crash dialogs). FP98.. Well, let's not go there. I can't even bring myself to try loading Outlook Express anymore. Last time I tried, it did the Windows equivilant of laughing in my face. (Yeah, it crashed on startup) Besides, I like telnetting to my headless Linux server (486DX2/50, 12mb of RAM) and using Pine more than a graphical, bloated, slower than necessary e-mail client anyways. Yep. Must be those damned non-Microsoft programs again.

Linux:
Add network card
Boot
as root:
modprobe ne2k-pci
dhcpcd
Done.
Before anyone starts with the "How'd this get a score of 5?"
He typed "How's it being done? (core5)" in the subject.

Apache/1.3.6 Server at linux360.dn.net Port 80
This was brought on by holding CTRL+R
Hm... modprobe ne2kpci?
Just click on the drop box that shows HTML formatted in it, and switch it to your preference.
ln /dev/ttyS0 /dev/cua0
Problem solved.
(Read between the lines: No incompatibility. Make another argument, or drive through. Thank you.)
Oh come on people! He typed this in the subject line:

Except for the entire "This isn't an application, but a few .pdf files" thing.
It's news because they changed the agreement completely, again. It's an entirely different agreement than what was there a couple weeks ago.

Actually, it depends...
If the box was a PPC box, yeah Windows would fail first.
If you put LinuxPPC on a P2 450 though...
It's people being jackasses and ping flooding, smurfing, etc.. the box itself and others on the network.
A little clue here: You can't break into the box with ping -f, people.

Oh come on, you're going to tell me Microsoft doesn't have people attacking the LinuxPPC box?
You misread.
$200 machine. $50 of it is for the hardware modem (I've been corrected as to the cost of the modem in these machines).

Fact:
When this box runs Linux, it NEVER crashes. Not with load averages over 10, not when playing Quake.

Oops, put company b in there twice. Otherwise, you said the exact same thing as me, but badly formatted.
No... It's Company A buys Division A from Company B and Division A from Company B.
Via is buying both Cyrix and WinChip.
