Well, a simple search would have given you quite a bit of information..
I mean no flame, but if you're as knowledgeable as you claim to be... the current available docs would be enough. I mean, there's even a sample device driver to start yourself on.
When you email technical lists, with very vague questions, you get bad answers...
Unless you truly have like 2% usage, exchange
would have croaked long ago.
No i don't admin exchange, but i have seen it croak under an incoming queue of 4k mails on MUCH larger hardware ( compaq 5000R's with raid 5 arrays ), and that's just for the bridge head servers... never mind all the mailbox, and the secondary bridgehead server(s).
How do i know, well, i set up the mail caching infrastructure that sits a step above exchange,
based of course on FreeBSD + Qmail:)...
and it's there because exchaneg can't handle the load...
Exchange has some nifty features, and it's actually the only product "now" in the market that does them, but come on, it's no strong mta...
OK, once again, most slashdot users like to be counter-trend without really analyzing things for themselves..
Here are the facts:
Many people ARE dying of AIDS in brazil. And the world
Brazil DID try to come to an agreement with the swiss patent holder, lik eit HAD done with anoither patent holder, to try to lower the price. ( yes people, it is commong practice for there to be different prices for different sections of the world, it's called economics)
If brazil has an AIDS problem, the world has an aids problem... AIDS is a mutating and transmitable decease.. guess whow it got spread around in the first time. So it is in the world's best intesrest to deal with this.
Yes i believe pharmaceuticals working on aids drugs should get their right compensation, but i think the issue in this is much bigger. I believe that global govt's should be involved in this. There should be some sort of collaboration into fighting this, and more affordable drugs, maybe thru global financing, is definetely a way to go. Face it, this has long turned into a WORLD crisis...
Unfotunately, since no real solutions or global colaborations are indeed in place ( they are all basically being planed, proposed). This is turned
into a case of Stealing foor for survival... LITERALLY
This is not a clear case... it's as grayer a case as you can get...
Damn, you would figure you guys would read a bit more before you post ( but heck, this IS slashdot ).
Part of his duties, besides being involved in dariwn, are to keep working on FreeBSD.
Why you ask?
Because apple is source syncing many parts of Darwin with FreeBSD and there's soon to be a move to start syncing it with the 4.x branch.
Besides, that was the numero uno premise jkh had before he went to work at apple. According to his emails to the freebsd mailing lists, we wanted to assure everyone that his role in freebsd would not be compromised by his work at apple. If anything, freebsd is gonna get more benefits out ot it.
PowerPC port anyone?
"FreeBSD... because a pc is a terrible thing to waste."
Do you know what's the going price for x86 equivalent of the apple MB ( all 64bit pci, quality pcb, etc etc )... about $500-600... same goes for the casing and other components.
So, whenever you compare, at least compare it to similar things... like the SGI x86 workstations or High end HP and Dell workstations.
You will actually see that macs are cheaper.
Am really sick and tired of people comparing apple
hardware with e-machine type pc's, WHICH ARE NOT on the same league.
If you want to accuse apple of something, accuse them of not making low end hardware, but don't attack their prices, when you don't compare them to the ACTUAL X86 EQUIVALENT.
it's funny how the complains about MacOS X
are complains that would hold agains't any OS.
When was the last time windows,or any other
os for that matter, was EXPECTED to ship with
a dvd player, a cd recorder, an mp3 player, and
many other things that are third party in all other OS's
It is not the same kernel, there are different
kernels for each sparc arch that get installed
at setup... They are based ont he same come
for the most part, but they have different code
and are compiled with different opts..
BR just FYI:)
All this so called test shows is, " Who runs my software Better".
Not only that, but they are comparing differently tuned ssytems.
are these guys for real? come on.!!!!
Quarrel Numero Uno: Platform
This is their software, which is probably targeted at THEIR
dev platform, which is probably linux. Well, DUH, let me guess
which platform it'lll run fastest on..
Quarrel Numero Dos FS IO
Linux: fs mounted Async
Windows: fs is a JFS.
Solaris: fs is mounted sync
FreeBSD: fs is mounted sync..
COME ON... this guys are comparing apples and cars here....
try mounting ext2 sync and see what happens....
Better yet, enable softupdates on BSD FFS and see what happens...
Or even better, use veritas, on solaris...
The reason linux came high on top is because the fs was mounted async, which while it does give you speed, gives you VERY LITTLE RELIABILITY. th's why the BSD"s have their mounts sync. Now, soft updates closes the gap on FFS between an async and a sync mount.
Reason MS came up high also... It's a journaling file
system, compare it to veritas, another JFS, and see what happens...
Quarrel Numero Tres APP test
Heh, the test is an application THEY wrote, to connect to a server THEY wrote.... HAH HAH HAH, enough said....
The arguments of slothbait can be basically used
for any license...
You can basically s/GPL/M$ EULA/g && s/Stallman/Bill Gates/ and it will still makes sence.
The whole purpose of the GPL is to restrict the use of open source software so it can never be closed source. Althought that might seen as a worthy cause.. remember, nothing that is FORCED is good in the long run...
Maybe the BSD license is too idealistic, but i like it. It gets good code/ideas to spread and become standards.
The GPL tries to twist arms.. and people/companies don't like their arms twisted:-P
uh, tux is a linux kernel http server...
a VERY STUPID IDEA...
ok, so you gain some speed, at what cost?
instability? security? why do you think IIS
has such fucked exploits?...
badly written scripts become MUCH more dangerous
in such a situation...
Thru, threading support needs some work, but there are many test that show that on OS's like the BSD's and linux, forking is actually a more efficient method than threading.. if i had a heavy threading app on mulitple cpu's i would look
no further than solaris...
We run probably the second biggest cluster of FreeBSD
servers in the world, second to yahoo. And trust me, in
our internal test, with standard 2cpu, 2HD servers, the load
that a Customized FreeBSD install could handle was anywhere from 1.3-2 times the load a 2.4 machine could under stress.
And this was using plain old FFS and no softupdates.
Even with linux's stupid async mounts, FreeBSD still mopped the floor.
no specweb benchmarks on FreeBSD mean nothing.
To those who know, it will still be the performance champion
for load intensive and clusterable applications.
I talk from experience, not out of my ass like you.

24k accounts on exchange?

Bullshit...

On another note... that article DOES seem fake...
But not because of the reasons you gave...
Yeah, that's what i had meant to say...
But the actual saying slipped my mind...
so i wrote somthing similar... hehe
:)

Arghhh
If this comment is a true thought....
May god help us all....
he writes quite a bit of code still..
... hehe
One of the things he's currently working on is the rewrite of sys install into something that is humanly understandable
Plus he's very involved in packaging it all together.. after all, he is the "release engineer" also..
Damn, you would figure you guys would read a bit more before you post ( but heck, this IS slashdot ).

Of that whole Ksh compliance bit between the microsoftie and the creator of KSH.....
;)
Hehe
First, and foremost, impossible. Too much underlying technology in NT that is NOT owned by Microsoft
But in case this were to happen, and microsoft was forced to give away unencumbered previous copies of their OS, it would NOT, be under the GPL.
Reference implementations, that are done so others can look and implement, are beter licensed Under a BSD-Like or Public Domain license. Why you ask?
Well, do you think most companies would use the code if it was GPL'ed and they were *forced* to have to release their enhancements to said code base?
Not likely.
Even RMS agrees with this. ( see the Orgg Vorbis commentary by RMS, in which he agress with it's BSD-Like license).
Yet another case of GPL/Linux fanatics, thinking their way is the only way.
Kinda reminds you of the way MS thinks...
.. like the one with XP beta perhaps?
OH,
I guess they are talking about all those other operating systems without FreeBSD secure levels's.

For most situations, i mean, how much bandwidth are we talkign about, if it's anythign less than 6mpbs of external bandwidth, then this is plenty.
:-)
:)
And if you want to add ipsec/vpns, they just made a mini pci addon card to handle the heavy crypt lifting
Plus, just think of the hack value...

Both the Compaq DL360 and the new HP lpr 1000r have one standard pci, and afull length pci..
d =503
The DL360's are awesome machines...
But if you want to do it yourself....
here's the link to a reseller of a 1U case with two pci's... http://www.rackmountpro.com/productpage.cfm?prodi
Now fucking do your own research DAMN IT!...
why has slashdot become tech support for the clueless?
which part didn't you get?
Copyright law says that WHICHEVER rights not specified, are the authors, and his to decide.
Just like you dont have to explicitly list the do's an don't"s of a published work, all you have to say is that it's copyrighted by such and such.
Very, true.
:-P

Choose the OS base on merits, not on zealoutry...
Yes, it's read/write. and works like a charm.
:(
:)
My laptop is a dual boot Between FreeBSD 4-Stable and 2k pro, and mounting my NT partiton works like a charm...
my only problem would be a wa y of mounting FFS on 2k
oh well, I easily solve that by booting to 2k only once a week.
The machine smoked, and i don't know what would have happenned if i hadn't disconnected it....
:( ... bastards..
Dell's response? They sent a tech to us and replaced everything but the shell, not even a new laptop
and it has had one for over a year...
:-P
FUD
