    IDE RAID performance is GREATLY improved by having all drives sit in their own channel.

    Also, if you were looking for best perfomance, and reliability, Raid 10 is the way to go. For a small array, raid 5 is not much of a performance boost over a single drive. ( parity calcs )

    Also, those 3ware raid cards rule under FreeBSD, and are not too expensive.. :) ( ~$250 4 channel )

    Although it really is one side of the story...

    I admire the honesty and courage of a guy that would basically discuss his whole case before it's been litegated.

    And it just prove's something that i've always thought true. Successful companies are founded by people with thourough knowledge of the business they are forming, and by hard working employees.

    Whithout these, any company is DOOM(c)ed.

    secondly, putting a FreeBSD machine in securelevel 3 makes it vastly more secure than a default OpenBSD machine...

    Why is slashdot so full of them...

    To recap the extend of BSD'ism in MacOSX quickly

    The kernel is Next's version of Mac2.5 upgraded to included the featurs of Mac3.0.. and Mach itself is based on one of BSD releases at berkley.. so Mach IS BSD based.
    The BSD kernel, does not run like typical servers in a microkernel, it runs in the same memory/address space as mach. It came from Openstep, took some source from Netbsd, and FreeBSD

    All the user space utilities, have come from next, and merged with their corresponding (Free/Net)BSD utilitites..

    As far as linus' quotes.. they are old people..

    And Mach also is not the best microkernel implementation ( some have mentioned L3 as being a prettyy decent one), so that's why the BSD kernel runs in the same space as Mach, to address the performance issues.


    Please people, read a little, yes MacOS X is based on BSD code, why is that such an issue? do you think linux is the be-all of everything? damn people, GROW UP!!!!

    portability.

    even with gnome's promises of FreeBSD as a supported platform... gnome1.4 doesnot compile freshly. eazel, heh, not even close ...

    But windriver is a much bigger, and well known company, so if Hubbard agreed, then it must be good for FreeBSD ...

    I was a strong gnome proponent...

    that was until i tried kde2.1 with konqueror....

    ALL i have to say is.. wow..

    Responsive, fast, smooth, clean looking, no errors up the arse, and konqueror.... that alone puts the mozilla/gnome guys to shame....

    It just prves once and for all that qt IS a better toolkit... whether they lik eit or not.

    unlike gnome, kde has promised AND delivered....

    ....Just my opinion, of course am right :-P

    damn... it Rocks... they have com ea long way since i first used them in '97...

    Damn, gnome panel+sawfish no more forme...

    Plus Konqueror.... damn, the mozilla guys should be ashmed....

    Many times i've had a great deal of "FUN" trying to compile the latest gnome on FreeBSD...

    Same goess with kde2.1.... on which kdeinit still hangs on some "QT mutex issues "


    These projects need a very strong lesson into wirtting portable code. Portable code's benefits are not only in the portability, but by writting portable code, you're force to write better and cleaner code.

    And this, is the unix way...


    QT: Woah, by judging by the previous comments, slashdot has really turned into a place of uninformed/fanatic trolls...

    there really needs to be a tronger registration system...

    heck, even a micropayment slashdot is starting to look good.

    Has anyone even tried building this on something other than linux?

    Because i have, and it has some serious issues. It's a pile of extremely NON portable code.

    It's sad, but true, that those that get opressed, always become opressors. This could have been a true piece of a unix desktop, but intead they focused ONLY on linux and recently solaris.

    THis is one reason why i'll be switching to Kde 2.1 and maybe latter, to the upcoming enlightenment desktop.

    I enjoy my freedom.

    NTFS support in FreeBSD is rw, and has been for a while, only linux is ro.

    Using netatalk and freebsd, apple share seems decently fast.

    When was the last time filers/NAS's ran the clients file system..? most filers/NAS usually have their own filesystem, and use the sharing protocol as the interface.

    1) FreeBSD has No support for large files:

    Are these guys serious? FreeBSD has excelent large file support.

    2) FreeBSD has no support for hpfs:
    while freebsd cannot mount hpfs filesystems... this is not needed for a filer or NAS. Most if not all NAS units run their own file systerm. IF they want to have appletalk sharing... this is VERY possible. I have a cient with an appletalk file server runnign freebsd and netatalk that has been up for over 350 days...

    3) FreeBSd has no Netware Fs support...
    I guess mount_nwfs must be a fake....


    Either the guys that wrot this article where fed some real good marketing BS and they bought it, or they are idiots ( am incline to believe they are both )

    reasons why maxtor ditched FreeBSD in favor of w2k is more likely due to special licensing deals than anything else...


    (lack of mac os support...heh... somone should tell them about MacOSX being in souce sync with FreeBSD 3.2 ....)

    (lack of large file support, it's been there for ages)

    Well good to hear that FreeBSD or any open os is making inroads in india, as it seems india is a big microsoft place ( in terms of the aptitude of most companies and educational institutions ).

    your last mozilla argument would have been good if phrased:

    How large corporations kill good projects...

    Mozilla was only recently opensourced, and most of the developers are still netscape employees

    If anything the Open sourcing of mozilla has brought more bloat.

    The issues with mozilla re much larger, but opensourcing it doesn't seem to have solved most of them anywayz, besides being good PR.

    unfortunately the truth though, i would have loved to see netscape flourish :(
