  7. The end of Pwer woes on Is the Net The Cause of California's Power Problems? · · Score: 1

The only real and permanent solution to our power woes is to cut our independence from the power companies by using other sources of power. It is very possible for a household to be completely reliant on alternative energy sources. That would free up the power companies to better serve businesses and other consumers of mass quantities of power. The power companies are keeping us in the 1950s by fooling us (the average american family) into thinking that we need thier power. Now that the internet is in full swing, they can't keep the supply/demand ratio balanced. This problem will continue to grow as technology expands unless we, the consumer seek out alternative power sources.

I totally agree with the statement that the government has no right to regulate corporate activities. Government is the real problem here because we as people are totally dependent on it and always waiting for them to do something about an injustice (be it corporate of civil). I also believe that if the size of government was slashed by about 50%, large corporations would no longer have politicians to throw money at. Furthermore, if the size of government is cut, in about 5-10 years people will be broken of thier habit of sitting on their ass and waiting for government to take action. The average Joe (The apathetic, government dependant) will cast their vote with the almighty dollar.

  13. Re:You are not alone on Industry or Research Internship? · · Score: 1

A good way to build up a portfolio is to code lots of open source software. Most employers would be impressed if they could go to freshmeat.net and download something that you coded in your spare time. I dropped out of college about 8 years ago and finally finished up last year with no internships. It is very difficult to find a job with no experience, but not impossible. I showed my prospective employer some code that I wrote and answered a few technical questions correctly and found myself sitting in a nice cubicle two weeks later. If you dont end up doing an internship, beware, because you will need to cover up your lack of experience at first with BS. Good Luck!

Unfortunately, the general public does not run the government. PACs and special interest groups control out legislature by first aligning thousands of votes behind one candidate, and then threatening to remove that endorsement (and in turn the votes of the people supporting the organization) if the then-elected legislator doesnt do things the way the organization sees fit. I work for such an organization (The PAC is one of its many arms) and I have seen first hand how an endorsement by a PAC can make or break an election. I dont agree with this, and thats why I vote libertarian this year. We are being stripped of our rights by very powerful organizations that have their own agenda for us all. This may be the power at work in this new law also.

So, P2P doesnt work all that great yet. Big deal! The pirates still have FTP and usenet. It amazes me how the media is so quick to blame a computer program for the theft of copyrighted materials. Seems like its the convenient thing to do these days. Shouldn't the person who steals the material be scrutinized, and not the software that is used?

  20. Re:Part of the reason is... on Themes Removed At Apple's Behest · · Score: 1

I disagree. Like in the threads above, you can not win a court case over "Look and Feel". Its just that Themes will never be able to afford to stand up to apple in court. Think of it this way.... I really like the look of the McDonalds Building down the road. I don't necessarily like the Logos, or the proprietary part of it, but I like the way the building is set up, so I put up a building in a different part of the country that looks similar to that building. It has the "Look and Feel" of a Mcdonalds in respect to the shape of the building, where the entrances and exits are and the general layout of the place, the "Interface". If somebody builds something that looks similar to a thing that a company has, but containing nothing proprietary, They are making something different from that of the company, a "Clone". Clones will never be the property of the company that owns the "thing" that is cloned as long as there is no trademark or logo on it. Maybe Apple is still sore over microsoft stealing windows from them.

  23. Spam needs refinement on Mega-ISPs And Spam Support · · Score: 1

I think that the big problem with spam and why everyone hates it so much on the user level is not the volume of it (although that's a different story on the admin level) as much as the content. Who wants to get mail from "Hot, fisting teen sluts"? or "make 1 million a year just by sending a dollar to everyone on this list". I think that there should be an accepted standard of whats sent by Email. You never see ads for porno coming through snail mail to your 6 year old son. people would be outraged and the companies and/or persons would be forced to stop. I think that we could get just about ever Xrated spammer on charges of distributing pornography to minors if we really tried. Even if they just put links in thier Email, look what happened to 2600 for placing links to DeCSS on thier site. On the other hand, I know that most people here would disagree, but I dont mind getting ads for Technical magazines and similar items by Email and similar content and I think that that should be accepted.

I wouldnt want to spend all night chasing memory bugs in a web script, especially with a 3 day deadline.
