As far as gold is concerned, it has pther uses, this is why it has been a method of exchange for millennia.
Jewelery of course, and the fact that it could be beaten to very thin leaf.
In modern times of course its value is enhanced by it being an excellent conductor, used in electronics etc.

I still think Platinum (Pt) would be a better choice, since it has those uses plus being used as a catalyst in chemical reactions, and also being rarer.

There is certainly a need for a means of exchange that is not controlled by national governments, and that is also untraceable.
Bitcoin didnt work in that respect.

I have been a reader of slashdot, and reqular commenter for quite a while too. Back then I was online for IRC a lot, tp keep in touch with my girlfriend who was 8000 miles away. (we have been married for 11.5 years now.)
At the moment I am on medical leave, due to go back to work on the 21th Feb, so I tend to be online more than usual. I don't read slashdot at work, that would be against company policy. (Besides which I don't have time,) I just use my phone to play music.
For those of you that doubt my geek credentials, I have owned computers of one type or another since July 1979
And in 1974-75 in high school I was writing programs in Fortran, punching holes in the cards with a paperclip, and mailing them to the university computer centre (100 miles away) and getting the printout back a few days later. (This was in NZ, I didn't movr to the US until 2002)

I think they should hold the next winter games at the South Pole. Its an international venue, and you would only need to fly in the athletes, so no worries about security,
