  1. My perspective. on Part of Ender's Game Script Posted · · Score: 2

I really don't care if Lloyd plays ender, just as long as he does it right. one of my main fears is that Ender's Game will be toned down for a kids audience because it has kids in it. The plot is so much deeper then TPM. You would think OSC would see it as an affront to his own beliefs to not make this movie good. Was his intented audience for the original novel children?

He mentioned that high quality children actors are hard to find, this makes sense, just consider that Lloyd was the best choice out of thousands for TPM.

So with that in mind wouldn't it be cool if some producer went out on a limb and decided to make this all CG? we have gotten to the point where emotions can be conveyed through CG. I imagine that the battles would pose a problem to any director, and CG would be an obvious solution. So why not make the whole movie CG? it would provide a solution to having to find good child actors; you can just create them.

anway, just my lousy 2 cents.

  2. my take on this... on Napster Being Sued by RIAA · · Score: 1

The way i see it is that napster could easily get themselves out of this mess if they changed their image. the way the program is designed right now is that the entire focus is on the transfering/search of mp3s. They have to drop this image. Their is no way in hell that a judge is going to believe that a program that was designed around transfering a file format that is capable of legal use but which is predominatly used for illegal means, is legal.

So the solution to napster's problem is to move mp3s to the background, move the chat feature more to the foreground (hell include an IRC chat). AND most importantly, allow for the searching, or at least displaying of more then just mp3s.

If someone looks in a friends "napster directory" and sees more then just mp3s, then it can be assumed that the program is used for more then just illegal mp3 distribution and is instead another file transfer protocol.

What napster should be is a community that allows you to chat and exchange files, not just mp3s.

How many other programs are out there that act similarly? ICQ, Cuteftp, any major irc client... There is no chance that these programs are going to be touched, because they are not built around the transfering of one particular format. I would like to see someone tell me that icq isn't capable of acting in a very similar method to napster. it probably does...

Anyway the entire point of this is to avoid a legal battle. Because no matter what, a company that has generated near zero revenue, is going to lose a legal battle.

  3. Huffman... he will be missed. on David Huffman is Dead · · Score: 1

One of the reasons why I got into computer science and not just computers was to learn about the underlying theory behind the most common applications of computers. I always enjoy hearing stories told by the people who helped to create the science that I study.

Last night in a crash course for an exam I came accross Huffman encoding. Needless to say it was much more interesting then what I was supposed to be studying :p. I specifically remember thinking just how big an impact such a technique had on CS. I also remember thinking that in all likelihood Huffman, like all the greats seem to have done, had already passed on. Damn I wish my insight wasn't correct.

Seems like another legend has passed on and I won't be able to hear some great stories...

rip Huffman, and thanks. This is why I read /..

  4. Re:Sometimes ray tracing is the fastest algorithm on Revolution in Graphics? · · Score: 2

Ray tracing was used in John Carmack's wolfenstein - a classic example of how ray tracing can outperform traditional polygon rendering

I believe you are refering to "ray-casting" not raytracing. they are very similiar in that they both send out "rays" from the viewers FOV to the object being viewed. But ray-casting does so in groups, resulting in blocky images. Raytracing casts rays precisely on a per ray basis, which requires a lot more calculations and results in a much more accurate representation of the object being viewed.

Not a very good definition but I hope it clarifies the differences and why raytracing is much more math intensive then raycasting and why D00M and wolfy did NOT utilize this technique.

One of the problems with raytracing is that it doesn't scale very well. increasing the resolution of the scene being rendered requires more then just increasing the polygon count. Polygon manipulation can be compensated for mathematically. unfortunatly for raytracing increased size just results in increased complexity. There is no easy way around it. Of course I am no expert on the matter. Nonetheless That is why it is important to develop methods of computing rays at the hardware level.
