The bias seems to be that isolation is bad and that people should be around other people. They want 100% transparent security, if it can't be transparent they don't want it all. True security will never be transparent.
The whole idea of a 3rd party in a secure communication is ludicrous anyway. Stop the stupid ass warning for self signed certs and let secure communications between the two parties it concerns. Yes it requires that each of the 2 sides know a little bit about what is going on to verify the cert, but there simply is no such thing as a security when a 3rd party is involved whether its the Chinese, the NSA, or the CA themselves.

The security for THEM can be more or less secure than current. I don't want their apps shuffling through my shit on my phone. The only way I would use something like this is if I was using Cyanogenmod and over-rode their apps security settings and kept it locked out of everything. I'm not even sure that is trustworthy enough for most crap though. There really needs to be a virtual phone within a phone that can keep each app sandboxed to what it thinks is an entire real phone.
I *** LOVE *** connected devices. Connected to MY network and under MY control. I love to tinker and connect in and do things just to be doing things. But stuff like the NEST thermostat that cannot be controlled directly, but require me to ask PERMISSION from a central authority at Nest to control my device can stuff it. I'd love the technology but if it is in my house, no one else will have access to it.
Better hope the right open source company takes this and runs with it before the Apples and Microsofts and AutoDesk's of the world take it and run with it. In todays software and hardware OVER 50% OF THE BUDGETS FOR EVERYTHING ELECTRONIC, is spent researching and implementing systems and technologies that keep me from being able to use my devices in any way other than a way that generates revenue., They are not even satisfied with one time revenue stream, but now even cripple THINGS so they can sell them back as a service to generate a continuous revenue stream. The days of geeks owning their devices/computers is over and I resent that beyond belief. There really isn't any single place that anyone can go and get rid of this completely, so I can't even truly vote with my pocketbook. I just simply have to buy the electronics that are LEAST riddled with any technology that exists for the sole purpose to limit my capability/creativity in some way. I actually only heard about Nest about a month ago and was VERY interested until I found out it was cloud based. I immediately typed a complaint to them about it. I'm very happy Google is heading this way with it. Even if Googles open solution is still cloud based, it should open API's and communication documentation so that people like me who are NOT interested in giving control of my house to a cloud app under someone elses control that can sometimes override by proxy. I'm a security concious guy and I simply do not want my homes firewall open to anyone but me. My phone or tablet should connect DIRECTLY to my in home equipment or server without anyone else having to be involved.
A lighter truck just cannot do the same work as a heavier truck. Even if it were made out of theoretical indestructible materials. Modern trucks have had engines and bodies capable of hauling/pulling loads many times greater than they can effectively stop. Weight is about STOPPING a load and trailering it in a stable fashion. Even if it had an unlimited energy drivetrain and was built with theoretical indestructible materials, a light truck will get pushed down the road or thrown into a ditch by an unstable load if it doesn't have the weight on top of the tires. Lighter truck = less work done safely. Period.

When I read a newspaper, marketers can't even tell I read an ad much less who I am or what I did before or after reading the ad. We only use rooted phones running Cyanogenmod 10.1 in our environment. We have a fleet of about 50 smart phones and all of them but about 4 are Google Galaxy Nexus phones. We don't consider anything that we don't control to be secure.
I can't believe I'm replying to the troll but heres a list. First and foremost. I don't and never will use a tablet or touch interface for real work so I don't want charms that are huge stealing my screen real estate, or windows that force full screen or any arbitrary size. I want windows that ** I ** can resize to any size I want and have multiples on the screen at one time. i want everything small and precise because I multitask... a LOT.... and with multiple large monitors. I DON'T want an app store that thinks it controls what I can and can't install on my own devices. I shouldn't have to be on a domain to bypass app store crippling of my machine. I say what software goes on and comes off of my own PC and no one else. For my users on the network, hierarchical menus for apps based on purpose is still superior when you are building systems for people so unsavvy they don't even know the name of an app to search for. I don't want cloud integrated into everything by default. As an add-on its just fine, but I don't trust other people and companies with most of my stuff and I surely didn't trust Microsoft even BEFORE this NSA mess. I also want things to work the same way every time. If I click on an icon I want it to start a new instance. Every. Time. I can manage my own windows and decide when I want new ones and when I want pre-existing ones. I don't want Windows trying to decide when I want to maximize a window by getting too close to the top. If I want it maximized, I'll click a button to do so and so on and so on and so on......
I realize that none of these carriers are in the US so that may very well be the difference here... BUT!!! Why pander to the carriers? What we need is open source in phones in a way that enshrines the consumer first. GPLv3 all the phone specific software so that it CAN'T BE TIVO'IZED and corrupted and used against the owner of the device. I'm all for people getting paid if they want to be paid for their work, but it will in no way ever justify locking me out of my own devices in any way or using my devices against me in any way. I run a computer repair shop out of my house with open wifi and am also in an area with no DSL or Cable modem options. I'm bringing a cable connection in from a mile away with 900Mhz equipment and then re-share that over wifi to my cluster of neighbors. Everyone that comes to my place has a device that connects and I get PC's to work on that have bittorrent downloads in mid-download. They can kiss it.
As the human species evolves and our technology advances, our ability to be a "jack of all trades" decreases. More time must be spent learning especially focused tasks to the point of expertise. I think this is just more example of that. Yes, a digital world probably requires less overall brain power, but also enables a much higher degree of specificity of focus not possible in the real world. Yes. its probably all being used up on porn.
I laid out the two most often heard arguments people give for why it IS OK for cell phone companies to do what they do, and said both are BS. Its our phone, they don't have any say over what we do with it.
The same with rooting. Its a computer, I'll put whatever the hell OS on it I want to. I buy a beautiful engineered piece of hardware that the cell company loads with bloatware and spyware and unauthorized remote control, oh and you put artificial restrictions in my software that limits what I can and can't do with my hardware.... guess what? As soon as I get it home the phone companies cesspool of an OS is coming off and one that serves ME, the owner of the device, is going back on.
