I do not think that this is able to be done. Badly ran corporations will use anything they can to make more money. These companies routinley find loop holes and ways to get what they want. Eventually all things are ended in court where these companies have the money and lawyers to win cases by just dragging them out for a long time, this is why you rarely see legal battles between 2 big companies, they know it will take a long time and both will waste more money than they can hope to make. BUT companies will easily take small companies and individuals to court becuase they know they cannot afford to fight a lawsuit and will most likley just quit.
What we all need to work on is electing people into power who know WTF they are doing. People in power should know a lot about the internet before they start making laws for it. These people need to educate themselves about the internet and then maybe we can see some laws and regulations that make sense unlike the whole DMCA and other crap laws that any lawyer can rip apart in court.
its ok, i attribute it to the morons that get moderation status and are just damn stupid to see support. I guess supporting other people is not a value they see as polite.
I shall answer your question. LAN parties are great for lots of reasons. I am having one this sunday. My friends which are coming to the party all like computer games. We all like to spend time with each other and have fun. Last weekend we went to the movies and to a pool hall. Could we do a LAN party every weekend? No probably not because we would get bored eventually.
The only difference between a LAN party and a "normal" party is that the people involved play computer games and not gossib about mindless drivel.
LAN parties are also great if you are low on money, there is nothing good playing in the theaters or nobody wants to go deal with mobs of people pushing and shoving their way through the mall to get some new Boy Band album. Its a nice way to spend time with your friends and have a good time doing it.
"We would be happy to see Linux become more scalable based on its own development, but if it doesn't, then we will scale it ourselves and offer it to the market," Bishop said.
??? If they introduce their own code into the kernel and modify it for better scalability, do they have to release that source code or not?
Too bad I wont be able to afford one of these when it comes out, better start saving now.
I completely agree with the previous post. Just because you are on the Internet and dont want your mail read as it goes through the various servers people think you are hiding something. The media are the most guilty of this, they jump on crypto technologies becuase "criminals" will use them. Yes they will and so will the Government and considering things sometimes its hard to tell the difference between the two.
Even if you are hiding something, Personal Info, Address, Telephone whatever its your business. I know this seems like a hard thing to fathom for the media but as soon as something is outlawed the only people that get screwed by it are LAW-ABIDING Citizens. Criminals will still get things like crypto and guns and drugs and whatever else government thinks we should not have. The thing that makes criminals criminals is that they dont follow laws so making something illegal wont matter anything to them.
Considering all the privacy issues and things happening on the Net and the world, we NEED crypto. Since I started at my current job I used to not care about personal info and such figuring that I cant be traced and found, ERR Wrong! Having access to public and non-public databases that I am listed in several times at every address I used to live at, I reconsidered my stance. The only people that should know what you wrote is 1. YOU and 2. The Intended Person and until that day comes we need to keep striving for privacy and better encryption methods.
I wonder who thought this up? I have NOT read the article because of the whole req reg thing. It seems to me that it makes sense to run it through sewers. Nothing really happens down there and so there shouldnt be a problem with anyone messing with them.
Now all they need is to do it everywhere, especially right next to my house, and then things would be good. I have friends that live in new gated communities with connection speeds about as fast as the T1 at my work which really sucks becuase they dont know crap about the potential they have.
When I move, they wont need to rewire my house for DSL, I'm moving right next to one of the switching stations and will plug my CAT-5 cable directly into their system!
People have a preconceived notion that large companies are bad. They are not inherently bad for several reasons.
1. Large companies are not bad if they are not hurting people or other businesses. Who says that by having a large market share is bad, only if you hurt consumers.
2. Large Companies are not bad if they are properly run and offer their services at the lowest cost to consumers.
3. The Bigger the company the more capital it has to expand to areas that they would not normally go to becuase of the cost to do so. Companies will offer services to people even if they lose money just to GET customers and know they will keep them. Small companies cannot do this.
4. AOL/Time Warner has the capability to become the consumers best friend by expanding broadband and expanding its cable and fiber optics to areas that cannot get them. If they do so and offer their services at a reasonable rate then they are helping consumers not hurting them.
I will agree 100% that if a company does hurt consumers and does hurt other competing business they should be find and or broken up by the government. Government is here for the People, By the people.
Let AOL/Time Warner expand and let AT&T expand and see what happens. If they do good, than things are ok, if they dont we have a recourse later.
We need more scientific things like finding out what is on Pluto. I mean nobody really knows anything about it so why not find out. We really do have to do it now or lose the chance for it for a few hundred years becuase plutos atmospehere will freeze as it moves further away from the sun and it would take far too long to send anything towards the planet at that distance.
While this would be good if it really works and is safe. Having bad vision sucks. Since its from staring at a TV with a TRS-80 pluged into it to having 3 monitors next to each other, most of my life is spent in from of some kind of image device. Without contacts I get so see shapes and blur. I would like to correct that problem but I dont think now we are at a level where these things have been tested for LONG term usage. I dont need to go blind in 20 years because some company overlooked a problem in it's haste to get this to the market to make money.
Once tested and proven for long term usage these sort of procedures will help people with bad vision from having to deal with contacts and glasses. Maybe then we can all become fighter pilots and race car drivers!
First of all I do NOT agree with the Judge in this case. eReferee should be allowed to use its domain name. If Referee Magazine had a problem with it, they can and did challange it, they lost so what do they do, they Sue!!! I mean companies will continue to sue anything and everyone until they get their way, they have the money for it.
Lately it looks as though whoever is more famous (read : money) will win court cases because of the enourmous cost of a court battle. This is completely wrong.
Second The judge had NO right to prevent eReferee from using the word "referee" in their website. Is that not Censorship! I guess the freedom of speech and expression do not matter in this case. So if I make a site that a big company doesnt like IBM (International Business Machines) they can sue and I then CANNOT use the words INTERNATIONAL, BUSINESS, or MACHINES!!! How stupid does that sound. Maybe IBM should start suing people that use the word business or international, they have the money for it!
This case just goes so show that a lot of people dont know crap about the net ( read : Presiding Judge) and will make bad descicions because lawyers are good at what they do ( read : Bullshit ).
As the article points out, if everyone got reported for saying something stupid, there would be a lot of teenagers in jail. Now I do think that people should report things that they might find could be potentially dangerous. While this sounds good in theory it is not very practical, since it rely's on personal judgement. What one might think dangerous, somone might not. We have found a problem. Since the Columbine and other shootings at school, school administration is naturally worried about this problem. I do think it is overblown. The problem is that these occurances are very rare, the media will do its best trying to convince you that it happens everywhere, which is simply not true. Kids dont go around shooting up schools all the time.
The problem with this case is that the school refused to defend the girl who informed them of a potential problem. This was and is NOT a good idea. If I knew that by saying something which might not be true would land myself in court and cause a huge legal problem, not to mention cause huge problems for my family I would think twice, or at LEAST try to find out more information before saying anything. I look at this school as completely irresponsible and they should be sued for not backing up the girl.
It has always been a fact that if you dont fit in with the popular crowd and if you're not a jock, etc... that others will tease and make fun of you. I know for a fact that other/. readers have gone through that sort of thing as have I. Some kids also cannot deal with this sort of thing and go around shooting people or whatever which is sad. If I ever let and of that crap get to me, I know there would be several less people in the world today, the fact is it didnt get to me becuase I didnt care, I dealt with it and moved on. The kids that let teasing get to them should try to deal with it and move on, things will get better. I KNOW this seems simple and I KNOW it mostly doesnt work so chill.
The problem is not the kids that get so mad and depressed they start taking people out, the problem is that other kids are so stupid and thoughtless that they make fun of others for their dumb reasons. Maybe schools should start dealing with THAT issue and then they might start to see school violence start to decline becuase in my opinion I do believe these are related. As Rodney King said
"Why can't we all just get along?"
I do tend to agree with this, but I know it is just a fruitless hope that never will happen. I got through it fine and I wish the best of luck to those going through that crap.
I generally find myself getting strange looks when I talk about things like this. But I think this is just awesome. It continues to amaze me how much scientific knowledge we are gaining all the time. I mean, who would even think of running an experiment on this.
It is kinda weird to think about what implications this might have though. If this sort of thing would really cause an offshoot of a species, maybe we as humanity were caused by some diseased apes.
This is sort of an encryption thing I guess. I mean the bacteria could itself wait until a properly infected host mates and then deposit its own bacteria into the fertilized embryo that would carry the bacteria to future generations there by causing a mutated species to occur. But if this species is succesful and surpass the original species would it be considered evolution? or maybe just one of those freak occurences that just happens?
It is good to hear about these sort of weird happenings and other cool things at Slashdot. Keep it up people I would hate to actually have to put a TV card in my computer to watch tv. Cant do both, tv is behind computer, although I could set up 2 mirrors to display the tv output on the wall above the computer monitor thereby not having to put a card in the computer. huh?? ok its too late and I need sleep. Later All
Listen dickweed, my original comment was not ignorant. I have to deal with people everyday that got a computer becuase it was the cool thing to do. They cant figure out didly shit about how it works and then call me becuase they know me. The best excuse I hear is "My Friends computer does this, why doesnt mine?" People asking questions like that should not have a computer in the first place.
And what exactly do you count as using a computer properly?
Furiously beating your man-meat as you post a lame and ignorant comment on slashdot?
Oh yea beating my meat is the right way to use a computer, as is stroking at and talking to it in a sexy voice. Moron. Why dont you get off your mommy's computer and go play with your Playstation some more, isnt it time for school anyway? The bus should be just around the corner.
Well Looks like we did it again. BOTH of the sites are down. Kinda scary when/. can take out gov't sites. I know its Brazil but still, I'ts kinda funny.

I dont know if you were serious or not, but there are tons of Napster Clients on Linux. I will list a few...

I personally like this quote from the article.
