  1. Theo de Raadt on Linus Does Not Scale · · Score: 2, Interesting

From what I know, the only way Theo eats, pays rent, or goes to the movies, is if he breaks his ass working on OpenBSD. I.e. it is his full time job and he takes it seriously. And the quality shows the the history of OpenBSD's security and reliability. Linus on the other hand has stated many times that he has a life outside of Linux and many other things to do. Fine. Linus, you are a better man than most, and we all owe you a great deal of gratitude. But now that people are using Linux in banks, hospitals, billion dollar companies, etc, maybe Linus should pass his hobby onto some people that will treat it like a profession.

Sorry if I'm out of line.

  3. Don't we have enough junk in space? on Satellites on the Cheap · · Score: 4, Funny

Somewhere (maybe here) scientists predicted that with the vast ammount of crap zipping about up there, the right type of collision (say bewteen a chunk of solar panel and a sattelite) could cause a chain reaction that would destroy every sattelite in orbit, and make it impossible to launch more.

I'm of Ukrainian decent, and I have friends and family that have been there recently.

A friend had to pay off cops to avoid getting beaten up because his Canadian passport wasn't in Ukrainian. A priest I know was stopped right off the plane at customs and had to pay $500 to get through.

The country is corrupt and falling appart. Who is going to enforce this law?

  6. Not sure I see the point... on 4th Computer Chess Tournament · · Score: 2

One of the biggest problems when watching someone play chess, is that you think you know what play should be made. When actually playing, this often translates to a mistake. i.e. you can't truly understand or appreciate the game unless you are playing, or getting a commentary from someone who knows whats going on. Now Kasparov himself has said that there isn't much point in strong human players playing strong machine players, because the machines will win (they are better). So ultimately, when watching this tournament, no one will really understand any of the moves!

Almost always, functinality must be proportional to complexity. The converse makes no sense.
Furthermore, depending on the skill of the developer, errors have a certain probability of existing per unit of code. More code = more errors.
Now biologically: functionality of an amoeba vs functinality of a fly. Or, probability of getting cancer in a specific cubic millimeter of flesh vs. probability of getting cancer period.
