Here in.au we have a HECS (Higher Education Contribution Scheme) where University costs approx $3,000/yr (australian - US$2,000). You can pay this upfront and receive a 10% discount, or it is taken out as an additional tax when your salary after graduation exceeds $27k
Yes. You can. CSS. SSI. Never had a need for XLS. Jscript (or JavaScript, not MS' warped version). VIM might have a lot of functionality, but that doesn't mean it is functionality useful for web design. Isn't the Unix philosophy small components to do certain tasks and tie into each other? (DreamWeaver has a source editor, but it can plug HomeSite in - far better - even though Allaire and Macromedia are competitors)
Can you say Word Perfect? It's not Open Source, but it's freely available. Ever seen what WP for Windows costs? This is a little more than 'some contribution' to 'make money on the hype surrounding Linux'... Name a better word processor on Linux (and no, being GPLed does not mark something as 'better')...
I have to wonder sometimes... Slashdot visitors are some of the fiercest, fiery advocates of the GNU line... "information wants to be free". But enter something like this "but only when I decide it's okay" or "but not for The Man"... *sigh*
Though I don't agree with bannerads - to clarify your point - thirdparty ad servers are usually used by agencies - they gain the advertisers, and give you a licence to show their ads on your site for a fee... kinda like a recruitment agency licencing an employee to a company and charging fees - saves the client from finding the employee (and yes, I know the jargon is wrong;) )
I don't know that we're incapable. You mentioned 'every nuke in existence' - compare oil spills... if "all the oil in existence" was pumped into the ocean...?
That we are not entirely sure that it is extinct. There are regular 'sightings' with at least some basis of evidence behind them - not the usual kooks;) Tasmania, like most of Australia, is very sparsely populated... A very high percentage of people live on the coast. It is quite possible that the thylocine (Tasmanian Tiger) is still around somewhere...
I think I can pretty safely say that American society does not have the most sweeping freedoms of any society. Not all freedoms are good. Why is the US murder rate ten times higher than any other country in the world? *flamesuit on*
Yeah, but that doesn't become effective to January 1. That's still being worked on as an administrative nightmare that will (I hope) fall flat on its face.
What utter crap. How about this - I totally agree with the teenagers who stole your car so they could learn how to drive. Sounds pretty reasonable. *cough*
It's not encrypted. If you read more closely, xPDF doesn't handle password-protected PDFs - it's protected against editing. It *FALSELY* recognises them as encrypted.
I do believe the original poster stated "in my country" implying to the majority of US readers he wasn't an American. Believe it or not, your FCC regulations don't apply to us!;p
Saw that subject line, which reminded me of someone I worked with - an Access Developer, nice, but a bit clueless with work practices - (semicareer academic)...
Anyway, before she left our place, she asked me if I could burn NT4 Server and SQL Server 6.5 for her. Something in the way she had talked about her "old home system" made me ask what she was going to install it on.
Her answer? "I've got a 486-66 with 16mb of RAM" - and she wanted to do SQL Server development on THAT?:) I tried not to laugh as I explained NT Server would most likely not even boot...;)
Oh... like the Hotel in Space thread a few days back? ;p
My *home* machine has 3x18gb UW2 drives and an Iwill controller :) 384mb of ram too :)

Several things. Go research, and get your US-centric head out of your ass.

Larry Ellison, not Elinson :)
Umm the figures are true. Not on a per capita basis, but in absolute numbers, America has 50% of the worlds lawyers

There is an "MS" product called Liquid Motion. No idea what it is though. :)

Don't television companies, or radio stations, have better (not that I agree!) claim over this than DoubleClick? :)

I wonder about the day an animal comes along to hunt us into extinction :)

Doesn't the RIAA get a proportion of money for every blank cassette sold?

As opposed to someone obtaining an MP3 through breach of copyright?
I think kernel 2.2.9ac4 has some major NFS fixes...

Change this to:

And no more X on startup.
