This brings back something Knuth said in his "God and Computers" series. ( Well worth the listen even for you atheists out there. )
For years scientists, Philosophers and Theologians have been arguing over weather the Universe is infinite in size an age or if it's just very big and old.
What dose the greatest living mathematician and possibly best programer have to say on the subject ? Well he starts by cooking up an equation that will generate a number so big as to not make sense to us. With so many digits that it would fill volumes if printed out. He calls it "Supper K".
Then he goes on to say "I would give up immortality to live for "supper K" years. After all how would I know the difference ?
So what's the point ? My guess is that each time the engineers build a better telescope the Astronomers will find a farther and older item. Eventually they may get to something that's past the alleged age of the universe and start to revise the Big Bang theory.
This won't necessarily mean the universe is infinite however. Just that we can't see the end of it. The next question of course; Is there a difference ?
You know your site has gone mainstream when even ignorant rednecks start to log on.

To put that in perspective Europeans still lived in caves when Africans were building the pyramids. It was around the same time that the Chines were inventing Paper and Gunpowder. You see the specific wealth and power of individual nations is transient at best. There was a time when Babylon was unstoppable. At another point Rome ruled the world. The Mongols also had a turn at bat, as did England. Today it's America, In 200 years it will probably be what is today a 3rd world country.
My bet is on India. South Africa also has a shot if they can get apartheid out of the mindset.

Drowning these few bureaucrats under a flood of similar but poorly written messages may not be the best move. having a few hundred people say "and we agree with Mr. Simm" may be better.
I have. It takes some doing but when Windows get's seriusly messed up it will crash in safe mode. I guse you wold only see that if you repair broken Windows all the time. BTW : fdisk -> format -> setup fixes eaven those Windows setups that are bad enogh to crash in safe mode. So much for "hardware problems". ( Except one that had a genuine memory error and woldn't even run DOOM reliably. ( A 32 bit memory bug of some sort ).
Hmm... weren't all arcade games going to be X86PCs running Windows and DirectX in disguise by this time ?
Hadn't iNTEL and Microsoft come out with a set of specifications for arcade games that would be the new thing since they don't even require "forklift upgrades" ( I.e. you can change a CD and have a new game ).
Unfortunately some silly people decided that an Arcade game was too important to allow for downtime, BSODs and memory leaks. So what was that about Ecomerse again ?
Of course these things just add more ways for kids to burn our pockets at the arcade. However Arcades are a necessary evil. Anyone who has ever dumped a nephew in an Arcade so you could go make out with a girl understands the immense public service these bastions of society provide:)
It's also worth noteing that they are extremely careful to not make "unsubstantiated claims" or to say things that simply can't be proven.
I.e. They never mention why E-Bay didn't switch the back end database chores to NT. Everything is from the Gartner ( more opinions than a Gallop pole ) Grope. NEVER during the whole thing do they actually claim that an NT server is actually more reliable than a Solaris one or that clustering a couple of Solaris boxes on the back end wouldn't have killed all reliability problems.
Meanwhile, I am off getting my Solaris certification to be followed by Lutos Notes, Linux and Cisco ( in that order ). There just isn't that much demand for MCSE these days. ( at least around here )
No this is not FUD. For it to have been fud there would have to be some possibility of convincing people of the accuracy of the statements.
This is marketing pure and simple. It means about as much as a soda company promising to make you popular, smart and good looking.
In reality Windows is crap. Everybody ( including Microsoft ) knows it. So MS got a few "partners" to switch from Solaris to Win**. Big deal, I know someone who switched from a Toyota Corola to a Peugeot (SP?). Worse performance, More expensive, less reliable, equally attractive. Two years latter he wasn't happy with the choice.
Personally I think MS has a constitutional right to make any ridiculous claims it wants about it's products. It's up to competitors to challenge these claims in the marketing arena and in court where appropriate. ( Note the recent incidents of MS removing anti Netware FUD after getting "lawyer letters" ).
As for Linux ( when it's our turn ) we can FUD with the best of them. Let them come we will be able to respond with even more extravagant claims. Silly things like "This server has been up for 3 years" will go a long way before it can be refuted.
Well. I don't think they paid DBs salary while he worked on ethernet for Linus out of charity.
NASA saw as far back as linux-0.9x that this thing may become useful to them and if it dose it will leave more room in the budget for a few extra spanners.
Sorry about the drool but I really don't have a towel that big. Let's get this straight. 140GB on a tiny thingy with insane ( RAM like ) transfer speeds and I am not supposed to drool ?
The only downside I can see with this is that regardless of production costs it will be priced "for high end servers". I.e. at more than 10X the per megabyte cost of regular Fiber channel ultra SCSI 3 drives.
However maybe in a few years it will drift down to what we can afford. Although RAM might become so cheap that a couple GBs of it will be the norm. A UPS will then be made a standard part of power supplies ( makes more sense with Crueso ) just so your machine will have time to dump it's "working data" to "disk backup".
So the race is on for what we will be able to afford 1st. As for me personally I plan to put my pocket in the high end anyway:)
You see Microsoft has a version 5 out there that really isn't better than Netscape 4.7. At least not by much. However if they release Netscape 5.0 over a year after MSIE 5 and with very little by way of additional whiz bang gizmos it will not take off amount the clue-less.
This is why NT4 was renamed Win2K. It's why Sun has Solaris 7 out. With a version 6.0 on the filename all they have to do is come close to MSIE on the feature charts to be taken seriously.
However Mozilla for me isn't "close to IE". It is significantly faster across the lan ( Net service is too crapy here for me to tell ). Mozilla actually complies with every applicable internet standard.
Most importantly; Mozilla can run as an IE plugin so all a Webmaster needs to do is make his site comply with the written standards and test it with Mozilla. After that you put a "Get Plugzilla now" button on your site.
The other reason for the rename of course is that AOL-5.0 is already out and it runs MSIE-4.0 as the browse engine. They don't want to confuse the "Hello #Room" crowd by upgrading to a version 6 AOL that uses a version 5 engine.
If you were ever in doubt about our impending victory or the futility of efforts to block our path this is some evidence to help change your mind.
The way you fight a product that beats you on price, quality and hype ( the top 3 factors afecting a buying decision ) is by bribing people in positions to choose for others. I.e. I have some crap furniture to sell at inflated prices. I wouldn't go to individual clients buying for personal use. I would go to a major bureaucrat. Take her for diner and a movie. Maybe even sleep with her if she's interested. Toss a bit of money under the table to boot.
At the end of the day I will have spent $10,000 to get 2,000,000 worth of business and made a whole bunch of employees angry.
The problem MS now has is that this won't work against Linux. They don't have the budget to bribe all the decision makers in all the big organizations that could care. Most can't be bribed with personal luxury anyway. You have to ofer them subsidies on some other stuff. Deaply discounted machines to go with the software you are giving for free to make it all "competitive with Linux".
Those that do go the MS way despite the trend will have to explain the choice and they don't know how.
Why ? Because it's ok to be wrong when everybody else is wrong in exactly the same way. When it's you alone then you just look incompetent.
Worse yet Linux is "free" ( beer not speech ) so you can't claim to be "buying one thing instead of the other." After all you can buy Windows and let those who don't want it use Linux right ? No extra expense, right ? ( There is some but it won't matter when you are trying to justify the ban ).
#2. By Socialization *I* mean the challenges and situations you encounter from the day you are conceived all the way up to they day you die. Everything helps to shape you. Every interaction modifies your personality in some way. This includes the teasing you get at school. It includes the company you keep. It includes the dialect in your area. It affects your manners and expectations. It even colors your sense of right and wrong.
This of course brings up that old emotional debate. Are homosexuals born that way or do they learn it ? Is Homosexuality like disability or like religion ? On the one hand I see evidence of it being an indirectly learned behavior.
I.e. the woman who enters a lesbian relationship after having a string of really disastrous heterosexual relationships and declaring "all men are dogs".
On the other hand nature plays some really elaborate games with us. There are many hermaphrodites out there, including some with any combination of penice, vagina, testicles and breasts. What about the hormones ? Why shouldn't they do even stranger things ?
#3. No. Because gay people tend to react differently to the same stimuli from straight people. Just the same as women and men will react differently in the same situation. According to GLAAD dogma gays are born that way. That would make them an extra gender ( A gay man is *not* a woman ).
I don't know whether these reactions are a matter of genetics or pattern of behavior that develops through life. I do however know that they exist because I have had interaction with homosexuals.
#4. This was precisely my point.
You can't look at one small slice of society and presume to know anything at all about people. However you can make intelligent guesses after years of working with a wide variety of people in different settings. 3 Middle aged lesbians dose not qualify as a wide variety.
By that measure, I would know all about my fellow men just from having watched my older brothers.
Looking at lesbians is a very bad way to go about figuring out women. The reason is simple and every homosexual on SlashDot will probably flame me for it.
You see, the most fundamental differences between men and women are related to sexuality. That and socialization. However a gay person wasn't socialized the same way as a straight person and dose not have the same sexuality.
In other words, I can pretty much guarantee that your experiences working with straight women would have been significantly different. Young women ( who are more common, especially in tech jobs ) would also add significant alterations to your experiences.
So just because they are different why dose that make it a bad idea ? Simple, gays are a minority and as such cannot be used to judge the whole of society.
The biggest problem is that females are trained from birth to be conservative and to go for the old and proven in everything while males are taught to be pioneers and to check out new stuff.

2. Ignore PPCLinux and hope it goes away. Thus pissing off it's customers who will just go get Alpha or heaven forbid iNTEL.
to elaborate. If you are running Linux on a Mac you are doing something that could be done on an X86 PC. In fact you are doing less since a lot of proprietary software only runs on X86 Linux.
3. Start investing resources in PPC Linux. It doesn't really have a reason to do that since without a "no brain required" OS ( like MacOS ) all they are selling is reliable hardware and guess what. Some PCs are almost as reliable at a fraction of the cost. ( Penguin Computing comes to mind ).
A Mac is not that much different from a PC. At least not from a hardware standpoint. Even the performance of the CPUs isn't impressive enough to make a big difference ( 30% increase in speed for 50% increase in cost ).
4. Put of a site look like a customer loving corporation. 4. Put up a site and look like a customer loving corporation. This is what they have done. Don't hate them for it.
Some people don't like that OS for the job at hand.
PPCLinux exists.
Apple is left with 3 choices;
1. Try to stop PPCLinux ( fat chance from a technical and legal standpoint ).
2. Ignore PPCLinux and hope it goes away. Thus pissing off it's customers who will just go get Alpha or heaven forbid iNTEL.

One interesting fact about drug laws is that they apparently work in reverse.
I.e. in the Us possession of small amounts of Marijuana is a misdemeanor at best and is allowed for medical and religious uses in some states. In some scandinavian countries it is fully legal. Jamaica takes the opposite path of making it a criminal matter and sending you away for years.
Jamaica has slightly more than 2X the ganja usage of the US and 4X that of Holland and Denmark.
Go figure.
When Prohibition became an issue on the ballots Al Capone contributed heavily to the candidate who wanted to extend it and spread rumors against the one who wanted to end prohibition.
Why ? Because legal drugs are always cheaper. There is a premium that smugglers make.
This explains the way to actually win the drug war. Don't fight it. Make it legal. "Don't sniff and drive" is your motto.
Put draconian taxes on it ( 60% or so ) and ban advertising in all forms from the outset. Those taxes can go to policing the add ban and building rehab centers.
Do that for 2 years and you will have a slight increase in usage. After 5 years you are back where you started and after 10 you have 1/2 the addicts you had at the beginning.
Won't happen in any democratic country though. This formula is a perfect way to loose elections.
Hacking code alone is enogh to write good software solo. However to work on a *huge* team project where all your hundreds of subordinates work for free and owe you zip.

Not that any of that matters. It works, it's fast, I want one. What's the big deal ? just bring them on.

Apple is left with 4 choices;
Apple makes some cool hardware and an OS.
Some people don't like that OS for the job at hand.
PPCLinux exists.
Apple is left with 3 choices;
1. Try to stop PPCLinux ( fat chance from a technical and legal standpoint ).
2. Ignore PPCLinux and hope it goes away. Thus pissing off it's customers who will just go get Alpha or heaven forbid iNTEL.

Actualy it dose mean something.
