Because they didn't whine after the copyright extension laws, they didn't whine after DMCA, they didn't whine after ACTA? Surrendering to the aggression of the Big Media will not stop them to try again later.
#1, that figure appears to have been rectally-retrieved. Meaning I don't buy it at all. Official statistics from China in any capacity are going to likely be flawed due to the strong desire of the Chinese government to save face.
So if the Chinese government reduces the admitted suicides rates in order to "save face" then why are they still higher than the rates at Foxconn?
I'M NOT GOING TO FUCKING ENVY PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN A COMPANY DORMITORY AND KILL THEMSELVES TO ESCAPE.
You are jumping to conclusions here. As I wrote previously, there is no proof those people killed themselves because of their jobs. The 18 deaths per 800000 is very low, much lower than the suicide rate in my country (about 25/100000) or even in America. Eight hundred thousand are a lot of people and some of them will inevitably commit suicide regardless of what the company does.
A good portion of the revenue of these companies comes from licensing merchandise. Of course they will try to enforce their copyrights. The question here is that if copyright is strong enough to be a basis of a claim on a car design, these stuff are usually protected by design patents.
"A gentleman shot a police officer and stole his car," Fourkiller says. "He had been playing Grand Theft Auto."
He can't believe there's actually a video game called “Bully” because he says bullying is often what happens when kids play these games.
"Not everybody is going to react the same," Fourkiller says. "But I believe after hours and hours of watching the screen, playing the video game, being that person and taking on that role, people get desensitized."
Yeah, those were the times in high school when us gamers bullied the hell out of the basketball team...oh wait.
When there is negative correlation between working at Foxconn and suicide rates it is safe to assume that working there actually makes Chinese people less suicidal. Sometimes people kill themselves for other reasons than their job.
Bullying is not something that can be solved by just money. Give the schools/teachers enough rights to be able to deal with the problematic children, expect them to do so and hold them responsible when they don't.
It depends on the professors. The nicer ones create a digital book/note of the lecture together for a class. The reasonable ones announce "note writing competitions" and publish the winner on their site. If none of that happens there are still notes available from older students but those usually can't be relied upon. Having the official notes on a laptop helps understanding the lecture without the need to stop paying attention from time to time when you are writing. It also comes handy when you missed something or the professor didn't explain something detailed enough for you. It also gives you the ability to look stuff up from older lectures or the internet, without having to shuffle through all your notes you are supposed to write at the same time.
High school of course is a different thing but the article is about a university.
If you can download and watch the materials on your laptop it's far less distracting than if you have to take notes and simultanously listen to the professor.
So next time a company will spam in the name of a rival, thus baiting authorities to take it down. Just because they are the ones advertised is no proof that they ordered the advertisement and if they did that they know that it's being achieved by illegal spam.
It still could be used as a weapon of mutually assured destruction. You either comply with the terrorists' demands or they release the virus. Even worse, if someone could make a cure for the virus, they could release it without fear of getting infected, then become the leaders of the world as anyone who wants the vaccine would have to ask it from them.
SO...a rational person at NASA, if the organization was not at the mercy of Congress for every project, would dedicate ALL of their budget to getting that $10k/kilogram cost down to something affordable. Even if this took a large up-front investment to solve this problem.
But...but what about the moonbase they were supposed to build?
For one thing, there was once a fad of posting pornographic ASCII art on Slashdot, so it appears Slashdot disallows any character that would be more useful for glyph art than for English text.
If ASCII can be used for trolling just the same than there is little point in not implementing Unicode. The point of moderation is to prevent these issues.
For another, there was once a fad of using bidirectionality override control characters for turning text backwards, which would break the layout and allow spoofing a comment's moderation score.
That's because of a buggy/unsecure implementation. It doesn't mean it can't be done right.
The next thing will be teenagers building bigger emoticons out of emoticon characters. Then they will have to be included in the standard as well, and so on...
An unproven claim from MPAA that may or may not hold up in court. Which is a big problem with DMCA, that it allows taking down a site without due process. Even if a site is perfectly legal, they can still be taken down based on false accusations.
If they are eavesdropping on the ones who outlawed phone encryption so they can listen to the calls of anyone they wish then I call it poetic justice.
Now they only need to shut PIPA down because it's not radical enough and the Internet will be saved for another year.

The RIAA was also against the life+50 years copyright claiming it was too short.
He didn't claim anything like that, only that this move contradicts the claims of RIAA that they used to justify SOPA/PIPA.
If there really is so many of them than ET would be looking for a needle in a haystack.
Now come on, they are car mechanics not webdesigners.
Foxconn is not just a manufacturing plant but a whole city where the workers live and sleep as well.
That might be just a response to the media hysteria.

True, but if you are genuinely interested in the class you can manage to arrive in time and get in the front row.
