i just bought a m1000 and i can say that if you use a dvd player with hardware acceleration support (no linux support yet) than it can keep up (about 30 to 40% cpu usage)
should be not a problem one of the nice things of gnutella is that it's self sustaining, so if you can find one server you are all set and can continue since gnutella is both a server and a client the netwerk can keep itself going for who knows how long
the do make mips and there latest machine uses a sort of atx board (correct me if i'm wrong here) the also have experience in multimedia chips look at nintende
but talking so much about java it could also turn out to be sun who also talk a lot about linux lately
