  1. My favourite book in the discworld series. on Thief of Time · · Score: 1

I've been an avid Pratchett fan since I read Reaper Man and Guards! Guards! around '95 or so. And ever since Reaper Man has been my favourite book in the series. I mean who can resist: "DEATH is missing. Presumed...... Er.. Gone." And at the same time a tall skinny man comes to a small farm outside of Ankh Morpork and he can really wield a scythe...

So If you haven't read Pratchett before, go do so now! You will not regret it. I love his humour and especially all his cool footnotes riddled all over the books. I can't remember which book it was in, but one book has 4 lines of normal text and the rest of the page is one footnote :)

Every time a new book by Pratchett is published I grab a copy ASAP and lock myself in my appartment and read it from start to finish non-stop.

  3. Re:Did you use kgcc? on 2.4 Kernel Delayed, Says Linus · · Score: 1

Yes, I know all this. But the point I was trying to make is that newly converted(tm) linux users do not know this. That was the main reason for me trying to compile the latest dev. kernel with a vanilla RH7.0 installation.

I was merely trying to point out the problems newbies might face when they first enter the wonderful world of opensource.

It took me a year or so way back when in the 0.99p something days before I got the knack of understaning kernel compiles, patches and the diffrent branches of the kernel. And not to mention how to keep track of/upgrade all the software required for kernel building.

And I had come from a strict amiga environment were compilers & programming were practically unheard of (except fro ASMOne.. ;>)

  4. Fine by me. (and pretty damn obvious) on 2.4 Kernel Delayed, Says Linus · · Score: 1

I just installed RedHat 7.0 on my newfangled 2xSMP P3 700 system and decided to try the latest kernel (2.4.0-test9). Now I know I'm a newbie, but I can read, so after pondering over the kernel installation howtos I managed to include the parts I wanted and did the compile and install by the book. It did not work. .

But seriously, the kernel worked kind of.. It compiled and ran.. But sometimes gave odd warnings I haven't seen before. And crashed miserably while trying to run the parsec lan demo.

Now since this isn't my first development kernel, I know how to upgrade and check for correct versions of the software required for the kernel so I can make it compile. (just haven't had time to leech it yet... working as hell).

I just know that a shitload of scriptkiddies/newbies/wannabes etc. will install the latest RH7.0 which is the most talked about distro and complain as hell when they get errors compiling the kernel/crashes running the kernel from the dev. tree out of the box. So it's a good thing that linus bides his time and only releases the final release when he feels that it's good enough. (If I only had that luxury at work...)

Now if Linus did the release before it was good enough then we'd get a fscked up signal to noise ratio on the kernel mailing list (as if it's not bad alredy) and a shitload of bad publicity in the press. Which again would result in slower acceptance of Linux as an accepted OS in the buisnessworld.

If I were the boss... I'd most likely release new major versions even slower than linus is doing now... (but hey that says more about my skills as a developer than linus' planning ;>)

  5. Nice trend. on Parsec LAN-Test Released · · Score: 2

Last time when they released the selfrunning demo they released the windows and macintosh versions first and said the linux version would come sometime during the next days.

Now with the playable lan-test they release the linux and mac version first. Which is of course nice.

The only sad part is that I have to wait until I get home from work before I can try it.

Let's hope they keep up the good work and hope for the full internet playable version ASAP 'cause my gut feeling is that this will make working late hours at work worthwile with a few parsec breaks ;>

  8. Parsec & Redhat 7.0 on Red Hat Linux 7 Released · · Score: 3

I've been dying to get RH7.0 for one reason: Parsec.
According to this page the european RH7.0 version will include a playable demo (lan party beta release as they call it) with 50 MB of mp3 music aswell. Now what I want to know is will parsec be included in the iso(s) that are free for download? If anybody with insight could give some input on this I'd love to hear it.

And yes, I *HAVE* checked parsec for downloads. And no, there are none.

Hope this isn't too offtopic, but I'm dying to try parsec. Also wouldn't mind trying RH7.0, but that is not the main reason for me to upgrade ;>

Anyways, if you don't like slashdot anymore you're free to find a diffrent site to read. I for one am glad that we get news about new technology releases. I would probably not have heard about this for a couple of months if it had not been for /.
