Efficiency isn't everything. Sometimes we have overriding interests that we should sacrifice the efficiency of the free market for, namely the things that every person ought to have, like medical care and electricity and running water. Greed must NOT go unchecked, as history has shown us over and over again...just ask feudal europe about that.
Yes the government is largely corrupt in it's market "interference" but I get so sick of the mentality that just because the government intervenes that it MUST be bad. The government is capable of intervening in a non-biased non-special-interest based manner. In a way that benefits us all.
You fail to actually gain knowledge on this subject and ignore facts of the matter like how even after people started to question the legality of the program the administration CONTINUED to perpetrate it. So even if at the outset they thought they were doing something legal at some point they full well knew that it was illegal but kept trying (and succeeding) to operate it.
except that they didnt ask around because the president was the only person allowed to let people into the circle of knowledge of the program. It was the president HIMSELF who sent Gonzalez to Ashcrofts hospital bedside to override Ashcroft's deputry who was balking at the program. Yu was specifically chosen for the job so that they WOULDNT have to ask around, and thus could keep the program as secret as possible.
I guess you're not familiar with the term "plausible deniability". See you set up a program where only the president is allowed to determine who has knowledge of it, and then you get a certain friendly lawyer to write you memos stating that it's legal and then you say "well I thought it was legal" even though you knew the whole time that you were just setting up plausible deniability so that you can say that your intent was to do nothing wrong.
This is exactly how it worked for domestic spying and for torture.
yeah and it's also evil when the person that installed a "third--party app" goes to the apple store and expects support.
THIS is the biggest thing people misunderstand about apple, the degree to which their customers expect support. THIS is the reason why they try to keep such a tight control over customer experience.
The problem with your theory is the active control exerted by companies to convince the less intelligent among us to buy even when it doesn't represent their self interest.
I could boycott Apple until I die, and so could all the intelligent people who stand on their convictions and it won't matter because we're outnumbered.
Until people get educated about why restrictions are bad IN THE FIRST PLACE we're going to be stuck with them.
yeah, you know paying some taxes relieves you of all guilt. Nothing at all wrong with spending 2 MILLION dollars aka 166 years of minimum wage, ON A CAR that you can't even drive that much.
I considered buying a Kindle last year because I got sick of having to manage what books I'd have to take with me to school, and got tired of the weight. But Amazon only had 2 of 6 textbooks that I needed, and even then they weren't discounted much (maybe this is peculiar to me), so I didn't end up buying one. If they got serious about higher education and managed to get a larger percentage of books I'd probably try it out.
That said, I'm not sure how comfortable I am with having my books in digital only form. This semester in particular, a lot of my teachers have been giving us a LOT of pdf scans of books that they own, and how would this be possible if they had originally bought that book on Kindle? Plus you can't loan kindle books to your friends or colleagues.
Srsly, Front page of slashdot for wild speculation about recent Apple job postings? You'd think after decades of this game of predicting what Apple is going to do, largely by wide eyed fanatics would have become dull and old:(
How about we just wait and see so no one gets there hopes up about this pure speculation.
no you dont have to go. let the people that still actually care about the people that they went to high school with goto the reunion.
Not everyone has cut all communications / interest with people from high school. Personally I'd like to see a select few people and find out what happened. It wasn't by choice that I lost contact with some people.
While I wouldn't liken Geocities to the Colosseum, I too believe that these guys should be commended for keeping such an interesting archive. The beauty of the internet is that it's all digital so it's as if (to continue your Colosseum example) someone came in and copied the entire Colosseum before you blew it up.
That said, everyone that originally had sites on Geocities should have already been responsible for the content they left there. If it was actually important then they should already have moved it someplace else.
You also fail to take into account that they outright ban certain guns, so no amount of increased red tape will let you keep it.
you also fail to take into account the size of the existing gun base.
in any case gun control will effect things, but not nearly enough to act like it's some sort of solution. the problem is so much bigger than this.
I have no foundation for this, but I'd still wager that providing adult male role models to socio-economically challenged youth would have more impact that tigtening gun control.
you almost completely miss the relevant fact. most gun crime is committed by people who have already illegally obtained a gun. Therefore the problem is "how do you stop people from ILLEGALLY getting guns?", as this will have the most impact.
maybe it's because your computer is slow, because I play 1080p Blu-Ray rips all the time with vlc.
I second your recommendation of CoreAVC though, they're cpu utilization is sooo low! I was able to play 1080p videos on a 2.2ghz Athlon 64 : without breaking a sweat
my experience is of utter bliss using VLC on mac. it supports my apple remote (the infrared one), and generally works flawlessly, and I ONLY use optical out, and most stuff I watch has AC3 audio.
The only thing I use quicktime for is for WMV (with flip4mac) when I'm going to be seeking within the video a lot because VLC doesnt handle that well (takes a few seconds for the video to show up after a seek usually).
Why is this news? The blogger offers basically no evidence and is obviously very biased. Sure the web is changing, but to say that all static websites will "be ripped out" and replaced is a bit much. He also just dismisses any changes that Adobe could make to keep Dreamweaver relevant by trivializing them as add-on.
Seriously, spare me the blogosphere and it's lack of journalistic standards and the fanboyism for spreading drivel like this.
The blogger makes an interesting point, but it's just personal opinion.
All I was saying is that your implication that DD-WRT is eventually going to disappear due to "more and more devices that are supported by this software are already end of life or will be soon" is just not the case. It's kinda obvious that this was the extent of my comment.
Device support, I believe, is the reason that DD-WRT has stuck with Broadcom's closed drivers, which require 2.4 kernel, as the open source broadcom driver doesnt support "a lot" of hardware out there (i.e. the Netgear WNDR3300 that I mentioned originally).
It's pretty obvious that OpenWrt has focused on functionality while DD-WRT has focused on ease of use and device support. It makes it pretty easy to choose which one you'd like to use this way:) Personally I'm impressed with DD-WRT and how much time they spend developing for new hardware!
d00d dd-wrt is actively developed onto new platforms. For example they now support Netgear WNDR3300, which is one of the few commonly available 5ghz 802.11N routers.
Does it matter how much we've contributed?
To claim that because maybe we aren't having the largest impact means that we shouldnt worry too much about it is to deny the fact that we're polluting on a scale and of types never before seen.
Seriously, who cares how much of an impact it has, its still a bad thing.
To put it simply as "publications on technical methods" misses what I think is a key point about patent theory.
In protecting the inventor from having his idea "stolen" (so to speak) the patent system gives the inventor incentive to disclose his idea, thus establishing "publications on technical methods". Imagine someone who invents something, but never tells anyone because if he tells someone they (or someone down the grapevine) can take his idea and effectively prevent him from profiting from it. In effect the only reason to invent things is to give them away, because in most conceivable situations there are others that have better positions in the market to gain market share at the inventors expense.
This conception of incentive is further borne out through licensing, whereby the inventor can be compensated while the "others that have better positions in the market" actually produce, and profit from the idea. In this way the inventor AND the other businesses can all profit.
Further consider that this protection is not unlimited and patents eventually expire. The inventor is granted a limited time of exclusivity afterwhich the idea is free.
Obviously I would hope that people would want to give their ideas away and not have to worry about being compensated in exchange, but n a capitalist system patents are relatively reasonable. In order to assure that all inventions are available they sacrifice time. For a time only the inventor is rewarded exclusively, afterwhich period the idea is free. In a non-patent system time is of the essence so all ideas are free from the get-go, but the tradeoff is that some inventions are lost, perhaps to be discovered at a later time, or possibly never to be conceived of again! (however unlikely)
My friend was savvy enough to purchase a generic power supply on eBay for his Dell laptop. Turns out that the thing isn't UL listed and makes his laptop do wacky things (if you dont touch the body of the laptop but try to use the touchpad the cursor just moves back and forth really fast), and it doesnt actually charge the battery.
You need to be savvy enough to find a generic then additionally savvy enough to find a GOOD one !

i'm with you brotha! Why Apple limited people to only changing ringtones (and not all "tones") has mystified me since I got my phone.

Seriously d00d, you really think the engineering achievement of a 1950's era salt flats type of car even begins to compare? /ridiculous

only some drives over 640GB have reliability issues.
