  1. OS X does this on Fast Alpha-Blending In Your GUI · · Score: 1

Uhhh... you guys _do_ know that OS X does this, and that it's rpedecessor, OpenStep also does it. This is old news... nice to see Microsoft trying thought. Hahahaha.

  2. Everything Star Trek Should Have Been on Star Trek: Enterprise Reactions? · · Score: 1

    Finally, Star Trek doesn't suck.

We have characters with actual personality. They develop and react as real people. There's sex, thank god, even if the really hot girl will never "do it" with anyone on the ship. There's fight scenes, exciting aliens, and a human factor that has never been present before. Quite honestly, the only other Star Treak I would watch was Voyager because it had personality. I loved Voyager, especially 7 of 9 and Janeway, but seeing this new format in Enterprise makes me wish it was done this way! DS9 was atrocious, and the only reason to watch the original series is for nostalgia.

I applaud the new changes. If people were looking for ST:NG for the 3rd time they'll be dissapointed. Good. That's been done to death. Dispite some of the corny cliche's Enterprise is a great series. It's something that can compete with X-Files and Farscape ...

... and the Marketing Guru's at Intel have won another round. Can't wait till this hacked together attempt at MHz backfires on Intel when they have to sell the Itaniums... at 1/3 of the MHz. Hahahaha. Perhaps they should focus on price/performance instead of arbitrary numbers?

  4. Re:Ummm... MacOS X Does that, dude. on The Mac, Metadata, and the World · · Score: 1

Sorry to crash your party, but the MacOS does exactly what you are talking about... it allows you to choose which application you open a specific file with, in addition to setting the default for that file type. Very handy when you get a file from a web site without a file extension, but you KNOW it's a .zip archive...

  5. BFA in Computer Art on Are Computer Graphics A Fine Art? · · Score: 1

When I was shopping around in 1995 for a school to attend for a BFA in Computer Art, there were perhaps 10 in the US. Now there are significantly more, although the concept is still evolving. I have a BFA in Graphic Design with emphasis in electronic media. I hate to say it, but perhaps the more rural areas are still catching up to the cities. Electonic art is just as valid as any other art form. Marchel Duchamp and his readymade pieces of art were debated for years on this issue of "art vs. non-art". Photography was also debated as a fine art for decades. The real issue is the "hand" of the artist. I don't know how many of these "artists" there are out there that say electronic art is not "fine art"... but they are simply wrong. One of the first things I learned in Art School was that ANYTHING can be art... it simply needs an artist to present the work in an intelligent and meaningful manner.

  6. This is GREAT news! on CD burning Will Never Be The Same · · Score: 2

Despite the reporter's negative view about secure digital music transaction, I think the consumer can only benefit from this. How do we lose if we pay a low, reasonable price for downloadable music? Do you honestly feel good about yourself when you steal music from artists you like? If you do, move to a third world country where that's legal.

I have never had a problem with paying for music, but I love the convienience and satisfaction of being able to download music whenever I want. Having an integrated solution is the next logical step. Kudos!

  7. Where's the Mac?? on Tribes 2 For Linux Reviewed · · Score: 2

Could someone please explain to me why they are wasting their time on a Linux port? There are 25 million Macintosh users who have a _consumer_ OS... maybe the only thing that will come out of this is a MacOS X version? Let the flames begin.

  8. Great Game! on Myst III: Exile Review · · Score: 1

Well, I don't know what game the reviewer was writing about... but the Myst III game that I own is fantastic. I have a Mac and the game installed and ran flawlessly, although that may be a platform specific feature... hehe. The 360 panorma views are fantastic. About the only thing that was strange about the installation was that I had to manually copy information from my CD-ROMs to the hard drive. All in all, this is quite worth the money and I don't see why someone who liked either of the previous two games hsould not own it.

  9. Don't do it on On Starting a Successful ISP? · · Score: 1

My advice is to not do it. I realize that the Australian ISP scene may be different than in the US. With that said, it's still the business of high costs and low margins. Period. It's a bad business to get rich on. If you just want to do something for the betterment of humanity, you'd reach more people by donating to charity. The number one priority of the ISP's is servicing people who are completely computer illiterate. Everyone else has an connection by now. Do you really want to be the guy responsible for hiring a massive support staff? I could go on for pages why that is a bad idea, but I won't. Think of the logistics, how much money you'll bring in for rural areas, and how much will be spent on Antacid tablets for your upset stomach.

My reply may be philosophical, but it's a very important one to consider-- is this really what you want to do with your life?

  10. Mummy 2 was a good movie! on Review: The Mummy Returns · · Score: 1

I can find faults with movies when they pretend to be something they aren't-- the Mummy returns doesn't do this. It's a very entertaining film. The first was better and less far-fetched than this one, but I think the money I spent on my ticket was well worth it. The characters are fun and unique, even if cliched at times. The movie often falls back on the dialogue pointing out it's loop-holes which is funny, albeit done too much. Towards the end I felt they went too far with coincidence and special effects taking over the plot... but I still enjoyed it immensely. The women were hot, the action was sizzling, and the mummies were as un-dead as they could be!

  11. Power to the People on Linux Promises, Apple Delivers · · Score: 1

OS X will work because the people writing applications, administers of their servers, and all the people using the applications (read: word to photoshop) will be able to use a single operating system with ease. The power of OS X is to integrate power with class. Windows will never do this.

  12. You'd get a Mac on Rebooting The World? · · Score: 1

Well, I somehow doubt you'd end up with the monstrosity of Windows OS's. They're the dinosaur of computing. My bet is that you'd end up with something very evolutionary, similar to a Mac. But that's for software. For hardware, I would have to think that multiple, less powerful, CPU's would make it into the Specs. Also, since we're starting from the age of tech-appliances, I'd think we'd have two distinctly different computers... ones that do a couple of specialized tasks, and ones that do everything. They would be built from the ground up to talk to each other efficiently.

  13. Get a Mac on IBM's New USBKey Device · · Score: 1

Well, if you used a Mac it would be nearly impossible to ruin it to the point where you can't boot off a CD. In fact, I can't think of anything short of a hardware failure. Then again, in 14 years of Mac usage I've only had to boot from a CD (instead of my HD) maybe 3 or 4 times.

The floppy has been technologically dead for about 5 to 10 years now. I haven't used one in that amount of time, either. I realize not everyone has a use for larger disks like the Zip, but buying one Zip disk at 250 megs of space is hardly breaking the bank... not to mention everyone and their grandmother has a zip drive.

  14. Bail and don't look back on Where Should Company Loyalty End? · · Score: 1

Your company loyalty is commendable, and not too many people in your position would be that way. I was in a similar situation with a company I worked at, and I had similar loyalties. However ... you should take one of the new jobs and don't look back. You have to look out for yourself. I understand your problem with stranding your fiends, but you'll be doing them a favor. If they have talent they'll find a job, maybe even in the new company you work for. (An interesting thread yesterday pointed out non-competition agreements and their flawed nature so don't feel like you couldn't take a few survivors from the sinking ship!)

Also, don't feel bad about leaving. If the upper management is as incompetant as it sounds like they are, then it's their fault and not yours. Honestly, how much can the star player do without a supporting staff? You're better off putting yourself into a company with good potential and solid management. Your life will have less stress and your friends will understand, and find a new job.

  15. Previous Invention on Non-Competing With Microsoft · · Score: 1

Let's not forget the all too important "previous invention" form. At my company they have a ludicrous amount of verbage in my contract stating that anything I make at the company is theirs... except for things I do in my spare time, not on their machines, or ideas I had before the company. So in order for me to protect some crititcal ideas I wrote a document, per their request, disclosing the generalities of my previous inventions. Now they can't claim some ideas to be theres... and if you're as earger to start a business and I think you are, then you'll want to cover your butt. Because if you suddenly make a million or more, that previous company will say "oh, gee, didn't that guy work for us, and didn't he sign that agreement? Oh, that's right... everything he developed is ours, and so is his new company's intellectual property that's related to our business." Well, not with the Previous Inventions Disclosure agreement! 16. Very comparable on Is Mac OS X Threatening Linux? · · Score: 1

The point is that you have a usable version of Unix for consumers, and the underpinning and do-dads for all the techies. It's a dream come true. I use it, love it, and can say with certainty that I still don't know why people use Linux. Do you actually like it? It's a powerful OS but it leaves a lot to be desired for UI ... ahem... none. > The only reason Linux might tread on OS X's toes is that Linux can be used as a power-user's desktop operating system. But in my opinion, that is not its forte - and shouldn't be its focus. Actually, the strength of OS X is that it doesn't have to trade off power for sleek UI. There is no focus... just power.

  17. Person power generators on Is the Net The Cause of California's Power Problems? · · Score: 1

What everyone needs is a way to produce a small amount of power for their own consumption. The use of a solor cells on their roof, for example, would allow them to offset the power they use on a daily basis. In fact, if everyone did that I bet you'd see a large dent in the amount of power consumed on a national level. I bet a couple solar panels could power your computer...

  18. Hot enought to cook an egg... on ASUS P4 Motherboard Bests Intel, Says Sharky · · Score: 1

The entire Intel line of processors is sadly inefficient... and capable of replacing the halogen burner on my stove. The performance of the P3 and P4 is NOT on track with Moore's law. The Megahertz are because they want people to think they're doing well... but when you reduce efficiency per clock cycle, but up the number of cycles, your taking 3 steps forward and 2 steps back. Nice try intel.
