I'm so sick of the idea that everything in the world should be safe enough for a child to stumble over. Isn't that what supervision is for? to steer them around or away from things which aren't suitable. I don't let mine watch 18 rated films, read Clive Barker books or drink alcohol - doesn't mean that I shouldn't be able to do it.
The problem of filtering in libraries is huge - why must the subject matter that can be accessed via the pc be suitable for all ages? do they only stock books that 5 year olds can read as well? why don't they just hook up a few pc's with DK software for the kiddies and leave the other machines alone for us.
as the BBC report shows - Europeans MP's are getting worked up about it - now those of us in Europe are quite frankly gobsmacked since these people usually spend their lives in committee debating nothing of importance and contributing nothing of interest to those of us in the nations from whence they were elected.
For something to make them sit up and take note it must be really bad...
lots of developers use "sniffers" to see what you've got and then offer you a version based on that - also you can use flash to make an animation but just output it as an ani gif/html/apple movie... etc. etc.
why can't we expect the parents of the bullies to control their children - or even the children themselves - if you are old enough to be in high school then you are old enough to know when you're not being nice. Some teachers do get involved - also some are too frightened to show an interest lest it be misinterpreted - but most are just trying to teach kids a subject as their job, not as their sacred calling in life to watch over them all like a safety net for when parents fail.
er - you can't hold a teacher responsible for a student going nuts with a gun - I don't think it says "mediocrity in the classroom will be punished by death" in the contract's small print.
beware of any company that has a long winded and worthy mission statement, that calls its employess "associates", that talks of synergy and paradigms. Avoid anywhere that interviews you for a technical job with a non technical HR person (I've been through this - they don't understand what it is you know how to do, let alone whether you'd be any good doing it at their firm). It's a cliche but it helps if you get warm fuzzy vibes from the interviewers - my best jobs have been where I've been the kind of person they want - not the ones where you have to be a little corporate drone/ette.
And, as above, avoid any IP and non compete agreements - you don't want to start your working life entangled with legalise and court time.
Hopefully - unfortunately they are being held in a segregated part of the prison system here in the UK so they get pampered time away from the general population.
I must say that we don't seem to have the same kinda spam problem here (unless me and my friends have been really lucky) - get a few bits every now and then but nothing major - I suppose if it clogged my mailbox every day I'd wanna lock em up and throw away the keys as well.
Up to 9 years? little excessive don't you think -I know Spam is incredibly annoying but sheesh, rapists don't get that kind of jail time - and three sickos who traded in kiddies pics on the net recently only got up to 13 months.
Punishment should fit the crime - make them first point of contact for an AOL user helpline - 6 months of that might even be considered cruel and unusual.
this is insane - in the UK I pay £13 a month to get something like 30 DIGITAL channels (some of it's crap but alot of it is great) - which I watch on my nice and shiny widescreen - the quality is around the same as DVD! - our basic UK channels are also now broadcast in digital so you can watch them like as well. Set top box and tiny 1 foot wide satellite free - £40 to have it installed. I can pay per view movies and special events if I like - however, I can tape what I want, when I want, to watch it when I like. You guys are really getting shafted.
well gee, it is a big deal because now I can't get the goddamn files I need to do my work today - try telling a user that MSoft's DNS is down and observe:
a) they don't understand
b) they don't care
which inevitably leads to
c) I get kicked around by people who think I'm coming up with excuses. Sheesh -/. is becoming sooo rabid and elitist, I used to get warm and fuzzy vibes here...
Good morning, you've got through to ISS support. Please stay on the line, your call is very important to us. If your problem is urgent please press 1 to leave a voice mail... This call may be monitored to ensure you of the best possible service.
In Britain we have a problem that prevents most of us from ever enjoying the high speed access that we hear so much about elsewhere. High call charges, connection fees and line rentals - the list goes on and on. Most parts of the country won't see ADSL for years - I've had to go with ISDN just to try and get online without having to listen to ten minutes of handshaking as my poor modem desperately tries to contact the local exchange.
Alas, you get what you pay for. If you want something better than average, you're gonna pay more, alot more and here we don't realistically have any choice about who we can go to. When I changed to ISDN it took 8 weeks to get it organised. With BT also being my ISP, the ISDN team couldn't even tell me if I'd be able to dual bond - I had to ring the ISP number...!! when I rang another department to ask where I could buy one of their "on sale" ISDN cards, I was asked to spell ISDN - about the only moment of fun I had throughout the whole goddawful procedure...

does that mean it'll be able to swim and rollerblade any time of the month?
