    On the contrary, they've learned it quite well and utilize it well. To quote my favorite book (Atlas Shrugged):

    The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.

    It was true then and it continues to be true now, of course the difference is now such laws are also heavily influenced and driven by major interests that are separate than the government and who are not in themselves voting individuals.

    Lucky for your office, one of Office 12's most under sold benefits (new XML based documents) will not just be limited to Office 12, in addition they will be releasing patches for XP and 2003 for sure (I am not sure about 2k currently) so that far more people can enjoy the benefits.

    That's why I say that its 'a little less clear cut'.

    Courts have gone both ways on the issue and there is not yet a definitive ruling or legislation that answers this question... until then it's pretty much every man and company doing what they think is right.

    Lets not forget that copying a DVD is a little less clear cut in the US because of the DMCA which makes bypassing a copy control mechanism illegal... just what has to occur to bypass the CSS on a DVD to make the copying succeed.

    In short, space shifting is legal, bypassing a copy protection mechanism for such a purpose isn't. Granted its amazingly easy today compared to just 5 years ago... but that doesn't make it any less illegal or wrong in the eyes of the content makers.

    Hardly, most of the 3d interface is eye candy and a few usability improvements, the biggest reasons to upgrade are under the hood, you know the user mode driver support, application specific audio control, new and improved networking stack... just to name a few.

    Not only is it inaccurate summary, it's pretty trollish too... sure running Aero Glass takes some horsepower, there is nothing preventing a user from turning it off and running it in a more 95/98/2000 style and not have the benefits or eye candy they could have if they had a more powerful system

    Hell, go back to 2001, I remember knowing many people whose PC's ran awful slow when running XP in Fisher Price mode, so they'd revert to the classic look and things were fine until they had a slightly better PC a little later.

    Same will happen here.

    No... worm specific removal tools exist and can be freely downloaded from Symantec and others... no need for AV software to be installed or running.

    Lemme guess... you are basing that solely on what you've read on /.?

    Allow me to list a few features coming in Vista that I am looking forward to:

    • Application level audio control
    • Application specific remoting
    • Vastly improved networking stack (apparently superior to any other OS's)
    • Support for user mode drivers
    • New printer technology (way beyond postscript)
    • Pluggable crypto system


    Take a look at this MSN Spaces post which has some links to some videos on some of these improvements and more on Channel 9.

    The same also could have happened as a result of the leak of portions of the Windows NT and 2000 source trees... thankfully so far it hasn't happened... at least that we know of.

    To quote the key section:

    If the Program does not specify a version number of this License, you may choose any version ever published by the Free Software Foundation.

    That just gave me an idea on how Microsoft and others could destroy Linux and other OSS...

    Step 1: Take over FSF
    Step 2: Turn GPL into a more BSD like license
    Step 3: ???
    Step 4: Profit!

    And I think we all know what could and would happen for Step 3.

    It would certainly be part of the license that you could not work on competing products after viewing the source.

    I call bullshit on that comment!

    That's not unlike saying that reading a book will taint you from being able to ever write and publish a book of your down the line because of course that first book will work it's way into your book in so many filthy ways.

    It builds XAML files for use in .NET apps... and despite popular belief .NET works elsewhere than just Windows, not to mention the Avalon Everywhere announcement at the 2005 PDC.

    The one and only time I've ever had a PC of mine hijacked was because of 180solutions under IE7 and XPSP2 a few months back... I browsed to a site related to them and a moment later I had several new icons next to my clock and plenty of pop up ads saying hello.

    Never before and never since had I ever had this happen... and it did make me a believer that a system could be hijacked without the user doing anything more than navigating to an HTTP url.

    if you actually read the MSDN page on this subject you will find that non administrators will be prevented from installing unsigned drivers... so not unlike many OSS OS's... you just need to SU or runas up to a root/Administrators account and install you drivers and then revert back to your normal privileges.

    It's just that easy!
