    Quake 1 was GPL'd by Carmack himself.

    You should know better than to buy a Windows Modem, that is where they got the name from, "winmodem" ?

    It is a lobotomized modem that does the MoDem'ing in software, with a proprietary windows only driver that makes the modem have more system overhead, and is slower (try playing Quake3 online with a winmodem)

    Funny thing is, with less hardware on the modem it is probably cheaper to manufacture, and on the shelf, they cost the same as real modems.

    Strangely enough, with the resource kit and some know-how, you can do nearly everything administratively on a Windows 2000 computer with the command line. They even stole "su" (or sudo..) as the runas command.

    The fact is, Linux is not a better Windows than Windows, and it doesn't try to be.

    Stop expecting it to be.

    The most noticeable part of this is that the run_task_queue fix should cure the lockup that some people have seen.
    The shmfs cleanup should be unnoticeable except to users who use SAP with huge shared memory segments, where Christoph Rohlands work not only makes the code much more readable, it should also make it dependable..

    In case you didn't notice, Partition Magic, under win9x, reboots to a DOS environment, then repartitions. The idea of partitioning inside Windows and not having to reboot is bizarre. pqmagic.exe and its required files fit nicely on a single 1.44mb floppy. The CD that you may choose to buy even includes a tool that makes the floppy's for you, as this is how you repartition when you use Windows 2000.

    I bought Partition Magic 5 right before version 6 came out, but it cost me $0 after mail in rebates.

    Linux is not Redhat.

    windows2000test.com was not "hacked" because
    1) No services were running
    2) Whenever a breach was imminent, they took it off the network

    Why when people are attacking Linux distributions on thier bloated size and retarded configurations are they forgetting Slackware? You don't HAVE to install all that shit and it doesn't use REDHAT PACKAGE MANAGER for its packages.

    Slackware is a Linux distribution, it is not based on Red Hat and it is not bloated.

    It is a good thing you put those versions in order of price and "power" usage.

    As the subject is "bloat", I remember an interesting article, which is written because people are finding the default install of Win2k Professional (the "smallest" in your list) to be too bloated.

    Microsoft themselves admit that thier smallest Windows 2000 Consumer distribution is too big.

    And lets not forget the ever popular Q247804: How to Remove Linux and Install Windows 2000 or Windows NT on Your Computer !!

    While on the subject of comparing the Windows failure to Linux, check out Q260233: Windows 2000 does not support ATA-100 (Mode 5) for IDE hard disks. All ATA-100 IDE hard disks that are used with Windows 2000 default to ATA-66 (Mode 4)

    What does a server need Internet Explorer for? Or even a GUI?

    I saw an ad for a local screwdriver shop that advertised thier "server" as having a 64MB nvidia video card and a SBLive! Platinum?

    What the hell, is this what we expect of a server?

    Servers need only command line function, wasting resources on a rotating "E" and having more ram on the video card than my mom has in her computer is fucking nuts.

    THAT is bloatware, my Linux server doesn't even have a video card, will Windows (any version) even boot up without a video card? Hell Windows bitches when you don't have a frickin mouse plugged in.

    For all the ppp troubles I have experienced and read about, I finally found a script that just works.

    Rain's PPP Scripts

    You just have to slap your username and password, phone number, and maybe change the login prompt expects (login: password:, or username:, password:)

    And it just *works*
    And its console based, so no fooling around with clicky ppp windows!

    Of course this assumes you don't have a lobotomized modem (winmodem)

    DirectX support? You do realize that DirectX is a Microsoft thingy designed to get the OS out of the way so that games can run faster?

    Microsoft has nothing to do with XFree86.
    The most analogous code for X that can be compared to DirectX would probably by SDL, although I am sure that is debatable.

    My city, like most, is built around a major highway artery. The local cops have timed the 37 lights as you pass thru the main corridor, so that it takes the most time to get through. Stop Go Stop Go, you get the idea. Of course they say it is to keep speeding down, but all I notice is that my full tank of gas lasts a lot less when I have to drive through to the other side of town.

    On a good day it would take me 20 mins to get to university, on a red light day, 55 mins.
