    Well I work about 4 hours a week for about $20 Canadian a week delevering Snail-Spam.. The Lake Shore Shopper... Though I guess I wouldn't exectly count as I'm 13....

    Thinking about that though I'm pretty sure the average Slashdot reader spends most of his time doing Boring-School-Work for No-Pay. Though I'm homeschooled so I get-to learn Perl but also for no pay :-(. But anyways if you counted school I'm guessing the Average Slashdot Reader would be something like: 30-40 Hours a week, depending on homework, for no-pay. If you ad in a job on the side possibly 35-50 Hours a week for $10-30...

    Thinking of it that way, being a 13 year old geek must suck... You must work alot and get no-time for Learning Perl or anything... Glad I'm home schooled...

    When I wrote that I was thinking of Corel Office 2000... I haven't tried it yet (I do intend to buy it when I get some money though), but from all the bad reviews I got the impression that it was slow and I figure that games would be worse.

    Also I have tried WINE in the past and the only game I ever got running was Starcraft, at about 2 FPS, I wouldn't call that fast. I do realize that WINE will get faster, but because WINE's relying on a non-native API it will propably never get as fast as Windows.

    I know there's NO chance of Linx dieing from relying on Win32 though perhaps a chance of Commercial Apps (Corel's great Office Suite anyone?) & games. Though I do have a tendancy to post worst case scenario stuff.....

    When I said WINE it I meant use WINElib to port it. WINElib creates a semi-native binary as I understand... The source is Win32 but the binary is Linux. I belive it is linked to WINElib like Gtk+ or Qt, though I'm not certain.

    IMHO if this gets too good it could backfire and we will have no Linux games:

    Company Wants to Port to Linux
    Company has two options, Port it or WINE it.
    Company figure WINEing will be cheaper
    WINEd game is released.
    It's slow and gets bad reviews
    Linux Game doesn't sell well
    Company hates Linux.

    When an OS relies on the API of anouther OS (paticularily a Microsoft one) it can really be hurt be API changes... Think OS/2. It's DOS & Windows API layer was perfect so no-one wrote native apps for it. M$ releases Win32 OS/2 gets no more new apps. How long until Win64 is released and WINE becomes obsolete?

    Though I don't think we have to worry about CowboyNeal being cloned... He's already DVD Player, My Favorite Linux Distro, a backscratcher, a God, a Browser and Intel's new chip... Not to mention a Kitchen Sink....

    I have the opportunity to see the basement one day: Foosball table, couches, TV, fridge, pinball machine, MS Pac-Man... The employees looked like ZZ Top rejects: beards down to their guts, hawaiian shirts, sandals, shorts. Damn, I wanted to join this crowd!

    Heh, I guess I should change my joke to:
    OS/2 IS PROGRAMMED BY HIPPIES!!!
    I guess the "[NON-MS-OS] is Written by a bunch of Hippie Freaks!!" are right for at least one OS....

    However, if fonts are your only problem, couldn't that be solved with a quick trip to the Fonts control panel?

    I tried that.... The KDE font thing has no effect on them... They work perfectly as Gtk+ themes though.... If I wasn't using (ugh.) Windows right now I'd take a screenshot....

    OT: One of the reasons I use KDE, other than it seems more polished, is that GNOME take 6 hours to download on a 56k Modem. KDE takes about 2. Man I hate my Small-Broadbandless-Canadian-Town(tm)...

    Although they are dead, Debian could very easily use the programs that they wrote, assuming they are under the GPL...

    I run RedHat myself, though from what I here they had a nice GUI configuratin tool. The best thing is they don't have to totaly die, Debian can pick up there tools and sort of keep them Alive for ever....

    On a related note an interesting Idea for commercial software companies is to make it so that your software is released under the GPL/BSD Licence when/if you go under.... Like for instance if Corel dies, I'd like to continue using the first Program I ever used: WordPerfect...

    I know KDE can import GTK+ themes, I've tried to get my favorites working on KDE before.... Though what no one seems to notice is that GTK+ themes screw up all the nice KDE fonts and makes them look horribly jagged/ugly.

    Though I use KDE as my desktop I quite often boot up GNOME to test out the new Themes or Nautilis or other nice looking program....

    Thanks for the info about the IceWIn/KWin plugin, I'll have to look into that...

    The only really original KDE2 theme are Aqua ones which I don't like much...

    Before anyone flames that Aqua themes aren't original I'd like them to know I meant good and was think they aren't original and thus wrote original instead of good.

    This is really a Good Thing(tm). My biggest reason for keeping GNOME on my drive is that it has the better themes. I like KDE as it seem more polished (no flamewar, please)... But the themes suck, generally. The only really original KDE2 theme are Aqua ones which I don't like much...

    Anyway hopefully this will at least bring some good KWM themes, I don't like the default ones much and there are no other ones that I can find... Come to think of it does anyone know how to run other WMs in KDE? I must be possible...

    But lastly it's good for IBM as the charity part in peticular makes the look quite nice, despite the fact that $6000 is pocket change for them... Combine this with the grafitti bit and I've come to the conclusion that:

    IBM IS RUN BY HIPPIES!!!

    Though it seems strangly familiar.....

    I'm homeschooled now. Though from Kindergarden to Grade 6 I was in School. Anyway, I was always tormented for being smart/a geek, mention your nice new 386, and the kids just stare at you in like Grade 1 or something.... Though mention Perl in Grade 7 and your likely to get tormented for a month. (Though I wouldn't have found out about Linux and such if I wern't homeschooled.)

    It's horriffic the way kids teach Smart kids, and the way they manage to get the kids they pick on for merley saying "Just leave me alone!". And if you ever try to tell on them they just will torment you some more.

    Anyway, now I'm just dreading going back to school for highschool, I (honestly) can't mention Linux or Slashdot to the wrong person...

    Just a few things:
    --I'm no BeOS zealot, I use Linux for most of my work and Triple Boot into BeOS for a few things.
    --I've had horrid time under Linux getting multimedia to work well. Linux works better than Windows on big files but I usally get better quality under Windows.

    Linux is Okay for multimedia stuff but I've had a much better time under BeOS and a better time under Windows with Multimedia....

    Personlly I think that OSs should be used for what they are meant for:
    --Macs for Home Computers
    --BeOS for Multimedia
    --Windows for world domination/Business
    --Linux for Geeks

    I really don't see the need to bend Linux (or any OS for that matter) into things it was never meant to be... Linux was never meant to be easy to use or for multimedia. Macs were never meant to be used as Serious Business Machines(tm). And Windows was never meant to be good.

    Anyway just my 2 cents (well 1.25 cents, I'm Canadian...)

    "If that's your definition of "rocks on multimedia," fine. I have higher standards."

    I never said it was perfect (though I've never had any problems with Media under BeOS....) If you give anything a 4GB .Mpg it'll choke. Heck Windows Blue Screens (big suprise) when I try to open anything remotley big....

    Anyway if you can find any OS better for Multimedia than BeOS I'll use it in a heartbeat, but it'll have to be pretty darn good to even get close to the Awsomeness of BeOS....
