This is SOP for Microsoft though. They're entire business plan, aside of doing everything possible to lock everyone into the Sisyphean upgrade cycle of Windows and Office (except make the products themselves better) seems to be this:
1. Enter an already crowded market with plenty of well-established competitors. 2. Introduce a competing product that is inferior in every measurable way. 3. Lose a whole buttload of money. 4. ??? 5. Profit!
I'd hate to be stock-holder these days. Their entire strategy seems to be best summed up by the word "flailing".
I heard plenty of theories that New Coke was a gimmick to get people excited about Coke Classic and still pulling people from Pepsi. In other words, a few people actually like Vista and maybe MS are banking on Windows 7 to win back the flock that Vista drove off. I can guarantee I will never switch back to Microsoft, but a lot of people might if Windows 7 sucks a lot less than "Visturd".
This guy has a 2-digit UID, how could he possibly not be on the level?;-)
Seriously, I've been using OpenDNS for a year or so, and based on what I know and everything I've read here minus David Ulevitch's description I don't really see a problem, just a lot of people overreacting. After reading what he had to say, I am confident that my gut feeling was accurate... unless of course he's lying, which I have no reason to believe.
But there's no honesty in the music business. Probably never was.
The good news is that the mass media hegemony is beginning to show cracks. The tighter they squeeze the more customers will slip through their fingers and find real music, real art, real independence. Meanwhile, the fat cats will sit back in their 67th floor suites and blame piracy.
Maybe Microsoft has finally realized what the rest of the world knows. They simply have nothing new to offer. They have to find some way to beat Linux because they can't compete with it. It's only the momentum of their monopoly, 20+ years in the making, that is keeping them ahead now.
After releasing Windows XP-ME, er, Vista, it's obvious to see that Microsoft, despite its numerous "reboots" in the development process, is still so mired in its Soviet-style bureaucracy and upper management that thinks it is entitled to its 90%+ market share.
They are going to have to fall back on FUD more and more as more people (like me) are sharing success stories of unburdening themselves from Microsoft's shackles, even if the actual percentage of users is still small. What Microsoft is realizing is that number of people who are now seeing them as we've always known them to be, arrogant to the point of blindness, utterly contemptuous of users and completely beholden to their shady business practices and monopolistic behavior to be able to do anything else.
Boo hoo! Cry me a river. If Microsoft hadn't strongarmed OEMs into not bundling alternative OSs or even alternative software (such as Netscape), this wouldn't be an issue. Microsoft deserves all the bad press and antitrust harassment they get, and then some. They've never allowed anyone to compete with them fairly whenever possible, and don't now, even if they are moderately more constrained in that capacity. They are an unrepetent monopoly and have gotten and maintained their market share largely through intimidation, extortion, lying, cheating and stealing.
Realistically, running in a non-admin account is a pain in the ass....in Windows....on a computer...turned on... over the rainbow.... in the conservatory.

That's why I built a decent facebook app.
An app where everybody gives you money? No wonder you think it's decent.;-)
Seriously, most of the apps are really pointless, or can be. I don't mind a certain degree of that because it plays into casual contact, especially if you, like me, make it a point to include personalized messages when you send someone flowers, give them a hug or throw a snowball. I gave a hug to a coworker who was having a rough week and included a short note wishing her well. I give my wife little things like that all the time, just like a card. There's a new one I received involving comic books, so I picked out a Watchmen to send to a friend with a comment about what he thinks the movie would be like. This can spur conversation.
I got invited to check out the D&D game, which I found out was really pointless because you don't _do_ anything except watch your character level up. Mafia Wars is the same thing. It's kind of fun for about 2 weeks until you run out of stuff to acquire. Then you're just accumulating money you can't do anything with. The sad thing is that there are tons of games that are _exactly_ the same as MW but with different themes, spaceships, race cars, superheros. Winning at MW essentially boils down to getting as many people as possible to join your "team". The rest of it is completely mechanical and could be played by a short Perl script.
Puzzle games, like Scramble, or some of the trivia games are the only ones that even count as games to me. It seems the market is wide open for some real non-trivial gaming possibilities that capitalize on the interconnectedness of FB users in a way that still allows for things like strategy and tactics. The mindless stuff is fine, especially when I want to do things like thank some nice person I haven't seen in 27 years for saying something nice to me, or wishing people happy birthday, etc. If you take the time to personalize and use the tools to actually communicate, they have value. But I think there's a lot of room for more depth in FB apps, and I'm close to getting annoyed enough at the lack of them to consider making one.
Frankly, I find the best utility of FB is a more open way to essentially e-mail to people. It's not quite one-on-one and it's not quite the same as throwing a blog out there to an uncaring, disinterested world, and that, to me, is the real value of the whole platform. Throw in some real games and apps, and I think it has the potential to be much more than it started out.
That's what I was saying. A modern phone probably has more raw MIPS and maybe even more RAM, but it doesn't have the I/O. Of course, it doesn't need it.
Don't worry. Table dancer is a legitimate career choice. Besides, you followed it up with that mob enforcer job, 3 years of pimping and then with a couple terms in the Senate, so it won't stand out.
Ha ha! That's worth some mod points, but you'll have to get them from someone else.
Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?
Welcome to the "savior-based" economy.
"It's not what you know, but who you know." just become another step closer to tautology.
I just want to point out that, yes, I mistyped "They're" when I meant "their". It's hideous and I feel like a moron.

So you're saying Vista was "New Coke"?

New York Times is out of touch with reality when it comes to computer games.
Now why would they be any different with computer games than with anything else?
Wow, I hope you're never disabled in any way.
Offtopic, but why can't slashdot link to the meat rather than some ad-laden rehash?
I think you answered your own question.
in order to develop non lethal weaponry capable of putting just about anyone to sleep.
And they've acquired commercial music radio stations to perform experiments with their progress. It's quite effective.
..embarrass congress...
Do you really think it's possible to embarrass people who have no sense of shame?

In short, time for more FUD.
Well, since you obviously don't care about using the right words when you communicate, I guess I'm not helping.
You used the wrong word. If you want me to be blunt, it makes you look ignorant.
Queue Sun...
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it
means.

I have about 4 and third digits in my UID, so I'm close. I've been married for 16 years and have four kids.
My karma is greteful for the thought anyway. :-)
