Fact is, now that they got the patent, assuming it stands up in court, there's no end to the suits CDDB can bring (and win). Federal judges are mostly good ol' boys who don't know the first thing bout them 'new-fangled computer contraptions'. You get a tech-related case in their court, it comes down to who has the fanciest lawyers. Assuming the lawyers are of equal stature, your typical judge will side with the large corporation.
So, basically, what I'm saying is that with this patent, CDDB can shut down FreeDB on a whim.
The fact that they 'jilt' Java, the acklnowledged programming language of the future, tells me that 'Linux Lovers' are content to see Linux stay at the margins of the computer world. Obviously, they don't care about mainstream acceptance.
In ten years, when most code is quickly written, instantly portable Java, and Linux developers insist on the continued use of 30 year old C, who do you think will have won the desktop wars? That's right, Microsoft.
Because Microsoft, whatever you may have against it, is willing to change. They didn't stick to assembler, or basic, or C. They use whatever it takes to get the job done, and they change as the situation demands.
So, while linux afficionados continue to write web applicatins in arcane languages like Perl, Microsoft and its supporters will be ahead of them, developing more stable, efficient Java applications.
Face it, Java is the wave of the future. Most cognizant CompSci departments have already figured this out, which is why they focus on the teaching of Java and only Java. CmdrTaco's is willing to ignore technological arguments and quibble with Sun over business practices. This is the kind of partisanship we don't need if Linux is going to go mainstream.
But you have to keep in mind, that, as the story states, IBM assesses the equipment, and decides whether to donate or recycle it. For once at least, IBM is showing responsibility.
On the other hand, though, I'd like to see IBM's criteria for deciding what's junk. Maybe what IBM considers useless, and therefore, ready to be scrapped, could in fact still be utilized by the poor.
There are millions of impoverished individuals in this nation who would like to be able to have computer equipment, even old stuff, but the current economic system restricts that. That is why we need to continue to give technology to the poor and needy. I hope the average slashdot denizen will keep this in mind before junking that old computer.
I hate to see this kind of thing. One would think that after awhile these corporations would decide they have enough money and can stop worrying only about the bottom line and start worrying about the good of the many.
What does it really matter if they make 1.2 billion instead of 1.3 billion, if it means the people will be better off. The cable companies should not be allowed to profit at the expense of consumer rights. But it won't end until you demand your voice be heard and your rights respected.
What can you do? Write your local newspaper. Write your congressman. Make it clear that you will not support corporations that limit your choices and limit your rights. If the aforementioned avenues fail, a boycott might drive some sense into the cable companies. You can get by without cable for a few months, can't you? Especially if it means having your rights restored.
The i-Opener story is an interesting one. I, along with the rest of you on Slashdot, have watched this story develop over the preceeding months with interest.
Unfortunately, I believe the majority of Slashdot readers have come out on the wrong side of the controversy, and helped to drive this promising device to a premature death.
Most of us learned of this device from one of the many Slashdot articles on "hacking" the i-Opener. Of course, none of the well-educated, tech-oriented and upper-middle class Slashdot audience would be expected to purchase such a low-end and unpowerful device, especially when the purpose of the device is to access the internet through a propietary interface.
But that changed when an individual decided to purchase the device, tear it a part and put it back together with unintended alterations. This individual then spread the knowledge of how to pervert this device from its intended use.
Eventually, the story of the aformentioned hacker's exploits made it to Slashdot, along with news of a loophole in the i-Opener program which allowed people to buy the i-Opener and then not sign up for internet access, turning the sale into an unprofitable one for Netpliance.
What did these people use there underpriced, all-but stolen devices for? Cheap MP3 players or x terminals. Some didn't even use the guts of the machine at all, instead tearing out the LCD screen for a cheap, below-market display on their rack-mount.
That is all fine, until you think of the victims, the people who might be using these devices as they were intended if not for the efforts of "hackers". Who is the intended audience of the i-Opener? I'll tell you:
Those with low-incomes and limited technical background. The elderly; people of color; folks in rural areas. The i-Opener might have provided these people with their first taste of the web, spurring them to further technological investigations. It would have given these people a voice on the web, where upper-income caucasians still hold sway. It would have narrowed the gap in internet access.
But all this ended because a few thought the rules didn't apply to them. I hope the death of the i-Opener shows denizens of Slashdot that their actions do have consequences. Others can't go on financing your lifestyle forever.

Clearly this shows how George W. Bush uses the courts to kill innocent Niggers, and when pressed about whether or not the system is fair, the Governor has shown an amazing ability to deflect the question and see to it the Nigger is scheduled to be killed the very next day! And the only reason African-Americans would be forced to sell drugs is if they're forced to by an inequitable economic system that forces them to.

Clearly this shows how George W. Bush uses the courts to kill innocent Niggers, and when pressed about whether or not the system is fair, the Governor has shown an amazing ability to deflect the question and see to it the Nigger is scheduled to be killed the very next day! That statement almost sounds racist in itself - saying that whites can do something or be something, and blacks can't?
No, it's no more racist than saying whites are more likely to belong to country clubs than African-Americans. Or that whites are more likely to go to medical school. Or (how bout this) more likely to be President of the United States.
The idea is simple: racism requires both inclination and power. To be a racist, you must be in the priveleged and powerful group. In the US, that means only whites (including Jews, and Asian-Americans, perhaps, depending on how you read the definition) can be racist.
A more formal version of the above definition is broadly accepted in the African-American Studies community, along with the general minority studies and social science communities.

Fact is, African-Americans don't have any worse a drug problem than Caucasians. The fact is, the only reason so many African-Americans are rotting in a corrupt prison sytem is disparity in sentencing guidelines between crack, which is affordable to inner-city African-American, and regular cocaine, which is what park avenue Caucasians use. On top of that, caucasian youth can buy pot and LSD and still have enough money to buy a 500 dollar video game player.
There are some discrepencies here that have to corrected.
And the only reason African-Americans would be forced to sell drugs is if they're forced to by an inequitable economic system that forces them to.
