Might be a "public company" related problem, most public companies emulate, or over time, have to do it. Basically a typical CEO case (think Allison, Hurd, Ballmer..), they are playing golf, sailing, jetsetting, giving speeches, buying some new boat, super car, house etc. They do not have time or motivation for innovation, but they have to deliver some message to the eagle eyed shareholders that constantly demand ROI and bitching about the stock price all the time. So if the constrained CEO has to execute something, he should rather not to deliver it himself, no no, that would be suicidal, imagine his poorly thought out plan fails, now, how would that look? So the smart CEO rather buys success or at least he emulates it, there are lots of advantages... and it always sounds like a good move, proven, familiar.. and will do justice to those hawkish bankers, analysts and other Wall Street related drones demanding positive quarterly message with some predictable results.
Isn't this different? Google recreated/copied that language and still call it Java. To use car analogy Oracle Java(TM) is like Ford Mondeo(TM) and Google created their own unlicensed Mondeo and even named it Mondeo, Microsoft for example branded it J++ instead of Java. Google is using the word Java all over in their documentation. To me this look is more like trademark and design patent (Java syntax) problem then a copyright issue.
App Store rule prohibits this, it's in their Licensed dev. agreement. Basically you can't use any external API that are not vetted by them. Maybe there is a legitimate fear that some nasties can be deployed that way, a vector for malware, but most likely this is just barking and sheep herding users and devs to iCloud.
Corporate security that US soil provides comes at a fee, expenses of the government, the agencies, the military, the state and city level services provided to them are countless. All those things have a price tag and Apple is freeriding it all. Anybody who is cheating the system otherwise supported by millions of hardworking people is spitting in the face of the average citizen, it is offensive to me who paid the taxes, if not criminal. Now it looks like if you buy an iPhone then the money end up in China, provide dividends to some rich Saudi stock holders, and generate no taxes to be send back home. What incentive is there left to buy this already fake American product then?
> What is the distinguishing feature?
Unlike LG, HTC or Samsung, RIM is a North American company, I would still prefer RIM and I want RIM to develop their own OS. Android and Apple-iOS have lots of drawbacks and problems, as a consumer I want more options.
E1 stepping Ivy 3770K CPU can hit 4.6Ghz (while keeping temps under 70'C benched), the current Sandy Bridge 2600K CPU easily reaches 4.9Ghz under the same conditions, that is 300Mhz more, the power consumption after overclocking is greater too, for enthusiasts this means no deal. Hopefully this is only an early model issue, people are now waiting for a new stepping or a different Ivy line up.
Tell you the little Hollywood secret, they HATE this. If the rubicon of 24fps & 2D is crossed, the film industry and all their flicks will be stamped as outdated '70s era films, similar to mono audio recordings once the stereo era kicked in. The BBC rant is actually lifted from their own point of resistance, as they fear the obsoleteness of their own stuff. The elitist nature of going 3D, going to higher framerates and the associated production costs, the elaborate post, the new thinking behind 3D production, the ditched old-school principles, that is mind-boggling for the establishment. For that simple reason the innovative and groundbreaking PJ's 3D movie 'The Hobbit' is doomed by the wrath of the industry.
Sorry, but lots of us waited for this "Ivy Bridge" for very very long time, seeing the new chip sometimes under-performing the older "Sandy Bridge" is pretty damning to Intel. Maybe it is time to embrace some new silicon, the ARM PCs loaded with Android are very inviting, at least we can put money where some development and progress is actually happening.
Because Google can't axe Java now, they in their infinite wisdom allowed it to proliferate. If only they have kept C and let developers to add Java, Python, Go, Haskell runtimes (all derived and compiled from C) they would have a great and truly free&open platform, the whole Java thing would get offloaded to third parties, something that smart companies do. Now Java is mandated, and of course you can't compile Go from Java nor Python from Java etc. as it all requires C to be the default underlaying SDK, which for some uniquely flawed executive reasoning is not. So Java is now the huge drag anchor of Android development, not only creating nightmares to developers, but also this patent/copyright Oracle stink.
C and C++ are the only languages, IEEE certified and deployed for mission critical tasks. Created in dire times and under pressure to get things done, and it shows.
Everything else is just mostly a scam, a corporate interest language, a self-promotion language, a graduation paper language, a support feeder language, a 'secure' language, a wikipedia entry language, we need to slow things down to push our hardware kind of language, an Amazon book language etc.
I like the part where they claim that we have "thousands of years of empirical data without an impact on global climate change", but if they really looked at the data, they would see that we have lots of near catastrophic events in that data and the planet's system is actually very fragile and prone to pollution events, look at this example from 1816 Year Without a Summer.
Just for reference, the disputed and now famousHansen climate study (NASA/GISS) from 1981 that exactly predicts CO2 effects on the mean temperature today.
With Steve Jobs' holy ghost blessings.., I for one recommend this final solution to wipe the terror botnet hive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2s1MspmfEwg
Sheesh... just to completelly extinguish this little dental X-ray conspiracy bonfire, the dental X-ray uses less than 0.01 mSv, here on this petty children's playground, they are receiving 6.40 mSv (600x more), and it is considered harmless by most of those not yet green glowing Japanese authorities.
To answer your first comment, if you buy 1000 copies of my song off iTunes, you can't use it in 1000 copies of your media with the intention of further redistribution (a film). iTunes copies are for personal use only. Any kind of distribution of my song or broadcast has to be approved by me or my publisher. Just for a second, for God's sake, try to imagine you are the creator.
Copyright is not only about revenue and money people, it is also about control of the actual use of your work, you do not want your music to appear in some gay porn video nor would you want your painstakingly created designs be copied and mass produced by some Chinese corporation without your consent. Copyright encourages creation of original works, you really do not want to reuse old or 3rd party stuff trust me, it's bad for your karma.
They simply lied and miss-classified their business operation. Amazon will be fined, CEO and CFO might get jailed, they funneled billions £ out of UK, cheated on Her Majesty Revenue Cohorts (a Scotland Yard backed operation), it's no joke not paying to the UK taxman.
FUD? watch this video (and lots of similar ones on YouTube) this is children's playground just outside of Tokyo, nowhere near Fuckupshima, months after the disaster.. the geiger shows 6.4 micro sieverts/h while the normal background level is in 0.1-0.3 range http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOIDFh3wPXY
The sales people get a huge cut for selling software like MS Windows, software is a boon and they love it, but that is not the case with Linux. Maybe that's the problem.
There is a problem with this concept, the bad content means people actually click on ads to escape it.., the worse the page is the better click through rate. Google benefits too.., but in this case some junk-web-farmer dark lord probably went over the edge with extreme SEOing so Google decided they might even do something about it.
Expect it announced as a feature, a friendly user password lookup. They got away with worse things like kernel crashing, OS without copy&paste..

Still, a pharmaceutical company would have much deeper problems with a false drug then a scholar with a false paper.
Just the fact that the cc info is recoverable from the drive is alarming, it should have been scrambled beyond recognition by some cypher.
