...the record industry isn't concerned about those 1-2% of us who can hack or use someone else's hack to restore Fair Use to our music - they just want to make sure they can stop 98-99% of the general, non-techie public from making copies. They've still won.
Well, maybe - but the thing is, the 1-2% of people who have the knowledge to do this can distribute ripped mp3's to the world via "File Sharing Protocol of the Month." Joe Citizen doesn't have to be able to rip SafeCD's - he just needs a net connection.
Scientists monitoring the locusts' brain waves report that most of the insects regarded Jar Jar Binks as "lame" and "juvenile." Also that the entirety of Episode 1 was "sort of a letdown."
Is anybody else out there starting to get dangerously depressed with this ongoing assault on freedom of information? I swear, it's enough to make me want to just unplug, buy a bunch of (paper) books (while you can still get them, that is) and just take the wife and guitar and move to some island with no phone, no fiber, no DirectTV. The USA is just fscked. Realistically, I don't know that we can fight this. The Content & Control companies will end up turing the Net into "57 websites and nothin' on." Oh yeah, with individually-targeted ads and consumer monitoring through video surveillance. How long do you think we have left before even the illusion of this being a free society is abandoned?
The funny part? Two years ago I would have thought this sounded paranoid.
The new site has been effectively banjoed.
... especially since BillG could flat-out buy McAfee with the change under his couch cushions and just shut the whole thing down.
Star Wars: Han and Chewie Come Back and Put a Stop to All This Nonsense Once and For All.
Well, maybe just eBay. Amazon isn't exactly awash in profit.
It depends .. on whether you use Linux or Windows. Whether you buy retail or download for free. /. ?
Slow news day,

Yeah, Europe is the world's last haven for digital freedom. If you don't believe me you can ask Jon Johansen (or whatever the DeCSS kid's name was.)

I'm afraid you'll never get PH1R5T P05T with that attitude, my friend.
Wasn't there a site that offered a $10,000 reward for finding prior art on these questionable patents? 'Cause I think I can find that.
