Nah, it'd be "Sam's Choice Linux."

  2. Re:MSNBC on Why (Most) Software is so Bad · · Score: 5, Interesting

The key to the article is the last section, which talks about remedying the bad software situation, describing massive class-action lawsuits as "a bad idea whose time has come." MS knows that it could live through a class-action suit of this type. Would your favorite open-source project survive being sued back into the stone age? I think this article is an attempt to get public opinion stirred up to the point that UCITA laws - which include things like mandated warranties on software products -seem like a reasonable solution, and thus make life more difficult for MS's competition.

  4. Re:A better explanation on The Empire Stumbles · · Score: 1

I think you have hit the nail on the head with your last statement. This whole series of films was supposed to show how Anakin becomes Vader - but Lucas blew it. It looks like the transformation actually happened at some indeterminate point between Menace and Clones, because the Anakin we see in AOTC is already, for all intents and purposes, Vader without the mask.

Not that I disliked the movie, though - the last hour pretty much saves it for me.

  5. Re:Exactly A Win For Linux on Linux To Run Sherwin-Williams Cash Registers · · Score: 1

Well, if that's too boring for you, try your local PlanHouse Gallery, if there's one in your area. Here in Jackson, MS, they have PC's set up throughout the store running Mozilla on Mandrake (8.1 I think), pointing to planhouse.com for customers looking for specific information about houseplans, etc. Worth looking into, and maybe a little sexier than cash registers.

  9. Go buy Wilco! on The Music Business and the Internet · · Score: 1

So OK, if you want to make the RIAA look stupid(er), go pick up Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot CD. This is the one that the band actually relesed for free on the Net when their old label dropped them six months ago. Now they've been picked back up and the album is getting raves. Wilco's a good band, and if you don't like their music, just go buy it out of spite!

Nah, the worst game for this kind of thing was the original X-Com: UFO Defense. I'm not talking about the standard stuff, like ducking for cover every time I walked out to my car, or instinctively evaluating every room I walked into for the tactical possibilities. One time, after playing for about 8 hours, I saved my game and went outside for a food run. I saw a couple of guys across the street - and I promise you a little red box with a "2" apeared in the lower right corner of my peripheral vision. You old-school X-Com players will know what I'm talking about.

You could definitely do that - I've thought about doing that with mine, but you'd have to be pretty careful. The pewter's not extremely thick, but you wouldn't have a lot of room to work with without messing up the "face". It would probably be best to go in through the top of the skull, but it would still be tight.

  16. The accessories are actually pretty cool. on Star Wars Collector.....Guitars? · · Score: 3, Informative

A friend of mine who is currently stationed at Yokota AFB in Japan sent me some of the picks and a Darth Vader volume knob a couple of months back. The picks are pretty nice, especially some of the metallic ones. They come in a little foil packet with a trading card, so they're definitely more aimed at collectors than guitarists.

The Vader knob is nicely done as well, made of fairly heavy metal (pewter, I guess). The only problem is, it looks absolutely ridiculous when actually mounted on a guitar. I do concur with the general perception here that the paint jobs on the Star Wars guitars rank right up there with the worst atrocities ever committed against a defenseless musical instrument. At least they didn't do a Jar Jar. Yippee!

  17. This could be good news. on China Ahead in Stem-Cell Research · · Score: 1

It's a golden opportunity for American scientists. Instead of wrestling with complicated moral dilemmas, we can now sit back and watch and see if God smites the Chinese. If He does, we can just say, "See? We told ya cloning was evil." If there is no smiting, then we can assume it's safe to jump on the bandwagon. Thanks, Communist China!

  20. Why bother. on PC-Based Digital Cable Decoder Hack? · · Score: 1

TV sucks anyway, cable moreso. After years of dealing with continually-escalating cable bills, I finally had ours yanked. Rabbit ears, baby! I get better news on the Net than cable offers anyway; I still get the local news that's hard to find on the Net; and I still watch a little (very little) network stuff. Yeah, I miss some of the cable-only programming, but I'd rather have the extra $45/month, which is what Time Warner's standard package costs in my area.

The funny thing is, I had intended to go DSS eventually, but the longer I go without all the extra channels the less I miss them. Now I have more time for constructive activity and self-improvement, such as reading Slashdot and playing Diablo. Is it really worth the effort to hack up a PC to emulate a cable box to get scrambled channels that for the most part suck anyway? But yeah, it does have a high cool factor; that in itself is justification enough I suppose.

  22. Buzzword Bingo? on The Hypermedia Hazard · · Score: 1

Really, I don't see the problem here. People (at least nobody I know) are not paralyzed by fear or OD'ing on raw information. And even if there was a problem, what would Mr. Katz like to see done about all this? Nothing that I could see from his article. It's like complaining about the weather, this is the way the media is today. Would we rather have one or two official news sources to hold our hands and say everything is going to be OK? I don't see the explosion of non-traditional media (nope, I'm not calling it Hypermedia) as a "hazard."

And correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not an Apple guy, but wasn't Hypermedia an old Mac tech from back in the day? Just curious, the name rang a bell with me somehow.

From Smokey to the Duke Boys to Michael Knight to Viper, western literature is about kick-butt cars, preferably ones that can (a) talk or (b) morph, or at least jump over stuff or go up on two wheels. It always has been, and the best of it still continues to be.
