Except now Linux is much more user friendly and easy to install. Usability is way up since XP came out, so those who are willing to try it today are probably more likely to enjoy the experience than they would have 5 years ago. Of course that's just my guess...

I couldn't disagree more. Wikipedia has, and always will be, a good general reference. That's it. If its goal is to be an encyclopedia anyone can anonymously edit, than anyone will edit it anonymously! If you want credible sources then you have to find credible sources. Wikipedia isn't it, but it may have links to credible sources.

For research Wikipedia can be somewhat of a starting point, but real sources of information still need to be discovered. Try starting with the See More links at the bottom of each page.

That's interesting. So if they stay on XP for say 5 more years, they keep paying license fees to use it? That must grow to be a very expensive license per machine. And if they stay on XP for 10 years, let's say past the product's life cycle, do they still pay license fees for it? Or are they somehow obligated to upgrade?

The XP licenses were already purchased. The only thing they may be paying Microsoft for is support. And they'd pay that whether or not they're on Vista. So Microsoft is missing out on licensing income. If other departments do the same they'll miss millions of dollars in license income.

I think your axiom is especially applicable to MySQL users. I've found MySQL performance tweaking to be as much art as science. There's never a one-size-fits all solution to any problem. Even if a book lays out a scenerio and a solution, quite often if your own situation is just slightly different the solution is very different.

I find these cookbooks more useful with things like PHP and Linux. Although I'm sure there are some good nuggets of information in this cookbook.

  7. Why it's news on Microsoft Vista, IE7 Banned By U.S. DOT · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'm sure some are wondering why this is news. The US government is Microsoft's biggest customer, by far. If many agencies cut back on Microsoft purchases it will hurt Microsoft a lot. I would imagine one department's decision may set a precedent for others. And even if not, many investors watch for government spending news when deciding Microsoft's stock value. So any change in government policy can have huge implications for Microsoft.

You've got it backwards. I made the personal investment (and financial investment) because it works out for me. I've built quite a few sites with Drupal. It's got a great API. Once I've got a site up there's little reason to upgrade because the site's built and doesn't usually require new modules.

I invest the time up front so I don't usually need new modules down the line. Therefore a site can stay with one Drupal version for years. At least that's my experience.

I never use PHPTemplate. I write themes as regular drupal modules, which are functional instead of template-style. They cleanly break the code into separate page, node, comment, etc. functions. Data is passed into each function as objects or arrays and a string of HTML is passed back. For PHP it's about as clean as code can be when it needs to be blended with HTML. The rest of drupal looks nothing like the theming code in the sense there is little to no HTML.

I've been using Drupal for years and could not disagree more. I was on the developer's mailing list for a long time helping out people new to the code. I contributed a few modules. I stuck with Drupal after trying many many other options. None were better written (for PHP). Most other projects do not pay as much attention to the platform aspect of their software. And most other systems aren't as easy or flexible enough to add modules.

BTW, if a module you like isn't supported in 4.7, keep on using 4.6. There's usually no reason at all to upgrade your Drupal installation unless there are completely new features you need.

That's not part of the platform. That's some random theme you picked. There are themes written well and themes not written well. Dries and others are extremely picky with the code allowed into the drupal core.

I have intimate knowledge of the drupal code and can easily say the parent is not at all informative. Drupal modules and core have no code that looks anything like this.
