Windows runs the hard drive far more intensely than Unix/Linux on a standard desktop. Unix usually uses free memory for disk caching much more than Windows. So in another swipe at Windows I suggest you ditch it.
I just noticed the Zend Developer Zone is "powered by" the Zend Platform which claims it's "the only robust PHP production environment that ensures your applications run smoothly at all times."
I'll be sure to not tell all of my clients about it as they'll wonder what's wrong with the PHP builds we're running now.
This would be great if it's true. Billions of dollars in the movie industry show where our priorities are. Hopefully ticket prices would drop somewhat also. I'd prefer if we spend our cash elsewhere. It would also show our country's priorities have changed.
For many years the NSA had keys embedded in Microsoft Windows. Remember that the US government is the single biggest Microsoft customer. Also realize if they do it voluntarily they wouldn't expect any public outcry. With closed source code it's tough to find. Plus the government wouldn't do anything about it anyway since it's in their favor.
For at least Windows 95 OSR2, 98, NT, and 2000 Microsoft has included a secret cryptographic key owned by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA). It's most likely that the NSA's key exists within Windows so U.S. government users of Windows can run classified cryptosystems on their computers. But it has been kept secret and it does provide the potential for abuse. "According to Fernandez of Cryptonym, the result of having the secret key inside your Windows operating system 'is that it is tremendously easier for the NSA to load unauthorized security services on all copies of Microsoft Windows, and once these security services are loaded, they can effectively compromise your entire operating system.'" Users of Windows outside the U.S. should be especially concerned that the U.S. government can possibly gain security control over their computers. Users within the U.S. should also be concerned that Microsoft has provided the government with a secret back door that they can exploit. (Campbell, Duncan. "How NSA access was built into Windows." Heise Online 4 Sept 1999)
Minis come with the laptop 2.5 inch hard disks. Disk I/O is one of the major bottlenecks for powerbooks and minis. If they were to include a 3.5 inch 7500+ rpm disk "simultaneous" reads and writes would be much improved. 5400 may be enough to simply record. But it's not enough to record and watch at the same time.
Try gzipping a huge text file and browsing the web at the same time on a powerbook or mini. You'll see what I mean.
If these products were overhyped I believe it's more the media than Apple's fault.
But as for the actual products the Mini needs one specific upgrade to be great option for living room multimedia: a faster hard disk. At 5400 rpm they'll be slow at recording. But then PVR functionality doesn't seem to be in Apple's interest. They want us to download video through iTunes. But the Mini should have a faster HD to be ready to handle PVR functionality that others will program for or Apple will add later to stay competitive.
Considering how much of the federal budget is spent on destroying this planet we should definitely be spending a fair amount looking for other habitable planets! Or at least terraforming dead ones. I don't know about everyone else but I'm about ready to leave.
I agree that the iPod killer won't be an mp3 player. But Sony's done a very good job with their current line of Sony Ericsson Walkman Cellphones. They're sleek phones, some with cameras, and walkman controls. They play MP3s and AACs. Their flash ram is upgradable. They're not the ipod killer but decent competition for those who want a phone blended with an audio player.
I'll tell you why it's "a must upgrade for Windows users." Because Microsoft will stop fixing bugs in your current version of Windows. There are many thousands of bugs listed in their "knowledge base" which state "we know this is an issue but we're not going to fix it in this version." I've been part of a development team which spoke directly with Microsoft representatives on many occasions and when we mentioned Windows 2000 bugs their answer was "buy XP." I quit.
The appeal is low cost Linux/Unix development with no software management hassles. We no longer waste time tweaking our linux desktops. The minis give us exactly what we need. And they're plenty fast enough for client and server development, even flash.
There's a HUGE community of visual basic developers. All they do is pass around their ignorance. The community doesn't weed out the weak when the whole community is filled with the weak. I should know. I was a member of that VB community for 10 years. In my spare time I learned much more and moved on. But I'm not going back and helping out that poor community. The best learn more and move on. Darwin doesn't apply.
I was reading your post and trusting your input until I got to this part:
FW400 won't cut it - even FW800 isn't as fast as an internal drive
A standard hard drive can't provide as much throughput as firewire 800 supports. FW800 is overkill for an external hard drive. Therefore an internal disk won't give you any better I/O rates. AFAIK the FW800 was created for the demands of video I/O.
So the computer I've been working with for 8 months isn't viable? Every desktop in my software development company is a mini and we'll tell you it's definitely a viable option. With extra RAM it's also viable for some lower-end multi-media work.
That's what I was thinking. Thousands of emails since 2001... did he not get it that there was a problem? After it became a problem change addresses and it wouldn't be a/. story.
A mouthful of integration. Some people have literally made careers out of helping people manage Microsoft's complicated combination of software. Microsoft brands every little piece. Then the IT departments of every big corporation spend a rediculous number of hours figuring out what it all means and ways to leverage it. It's exactly what Microsoft wants. I just don't understand why corporations haven't yet figured out they're waisting a LOT of money just thinking about these rediculous things without much payoff.
I just hope that any new government created is not made with Microsoft SQL and .NET. That would be stupid.
;)
You're right. I like my government created with people, not computers.
I tried 2 different generic search terms and get no results, just the same form. Broken?

But Mr. & Mrs. Reboot can have their computer automatically upload for backups. Since they're using Windows they'd better back up often.
Let's hope the stuff from your GDrive doesn't end up all over the internet like this presentation!
RTFA?
Someone has to ask...

good for the fans
How is content restriction ever good for the fans?
Are they thinking it'll make content owners happier and therefore produce more stuff, then making fans happier? I don't get it.
Or subscribe and tag it.

Oh, man, I gotta go blog about this right now!!!
