I ask this as I think this could be the funniest thing ever. I suspect that the plug-in would change Alice's name to Aleesha, and for the extra money you can get the hand peripheral.

I find this rather shocking and at the same time a wee bit disconcerting.

I am really suprised that Apple hasn't stepped forward to fund this, as IMHO it could be in their best interests.

Of course, given today's business world they could take the Rambus route and sue everyone that makes an OS. Hell, sue Microsoft, that seems to be the trendy thing to do nowadays anyway.

  3. Reference Definition on nVidia nForce · · Score: 1

I see everyone is complaining about the lack of PCI Slots on the REFERENCE board that nVidia has recently put out. Did it ever occur to anyone that it is a reference board? That means looky if you design it like this it will work. Nothing more. It will be up to the mobo manufacturers to do something with this wonderous peice of hardware.

On another note, the reviewer complains that the IGP doesn't perform as well as the Ultra, but that it performs almost identical to the GeForce2 MX. Hmmmm, could it be because the instructions for both chips are pretty much one in the same? I think so. Don't believe me read the article that was posted on the mobo at Tom's Hardware a couple of weeks ago. It is very informative, more so than this review of the reference board. This review is okay, but lacks any background information to make a basis. It does exactly what nVidia has said it would. I personally will be one of the first out the door to by one from either Asus or Abit, as if I recall correctly they said the would be supporting the chipset.

I have to agree with a posting that Neil Gaiman made when he found out about him passing on. He was hoping that they wouldn't publish his unpublished stuff. I personally would much rather listen to the opinion of peer of his, and someone whose work I also admire. I would really hate to see this become a Gene Roddenbery (sp?) type of exploitation, granted Andromeda rules, but that is only because I am one of those sexist pigs.

Let's be happy with what we have recieved from this great man and leave it at that.

I think that that is going to go over like multicasting has. I have been reading a bit into multicasting and it sounds quite exciting, but there is a slight problem in that few people are willing to actually utilize it even thought it could potentially make an impact on bandwidth issues.

I think the thing people need to focus more on is the infrastructure of our networks. There is a vast untapped, and already in place infrastructure available to all the world. It has been covered here on Slashdot on more than one occasion. Power lines. I think that there needs to be more attention to be paid there, and if people can actually manage to get insanely fast speeds we shouldn't hesitate to use it. Otherwise every peice of technology we come up with will always go the way of Beta.

I started watching anime in 1st grade, so about 1980 or '81, good ole Starblazers. So does this mean I am cool, or am I still a nerd because I am a techy person?

Besides can't we have our cool stuff, oh wait we invent the cool stuff;)

If you are a SA or a tech of any type and work for the networks tell them to bite off. We'll see just how cool they are when there servers and other things tech stop working. Hell she could even be relieved.

I may be single, but isn't really by choice. I make time. I have also made it know to my employeer that I won't work unneccessary overtime.

If none of these things work, do you at least get lunch time? People that say they haven't got time haven't tried to make time. I may be 26, but I learned awhile ago that time isn't something that just appears. You have to make it.

  10. Ah, ignorant quotation of history. on Dot-Coms Say 'Unions Not Welcome!' · · Score: 1

Labor movements were started as a result of unsafe working conditions, or because of unfair child labor laws. In those days Unions served a very good purpose. No how many tech workers do you have to worry about falling into large vats of molten metal, or having their fingers caught in machinery (daisy wheel printers don't count;D). Very few.

You use the term laissez-faire. One that is almost always linked to Socialism. So what did we really learn from history about Unions and Socialism. Both start out as good and well intentioned concepts, but both suffer greatly from greed. While the needs of leaders of both are oft times met, the needs of those that the leaders serve go unanswered.

Want a good example of why unions are obsolete look at the News Printers Guild that went on strike in Seattle. Boy that sure put a stop to the Seattle Times and Seattle PI. In fact for a while both papers were given away.

History as you can see has proven time and again that "laissez-faire" or cynical ideologues are usually right because they rely on reality and not a fatasy that will never happen so long as greed exhists

If the next big recession hits there will still be a massive need for people to maintain exhisting computer systems, even if the companies that hire those people may be hurting financially.

  11. Re:I support Unions for the tech industry on Dot-Coms Say 'Unions Not Welcome!' · · Score: 1

I am single, and too work in the tech industry, but understand a very simple principle that most don't ever think of. Look for a new job, get offer, accept offer, and then quit. Not so complicated now is it?

I will grant you that it can wear on a family to jump from job to job every year, but hopefully you did enough homework to avoid the same mistake.

I am noticing a very alarming thing, and, at risk of offending you all, that is a majority of tech related people are wusses. Nobody here has the guts to do what they know is right. Instead alot of you would much rather give up your money to someone so they can go and bitch about how poorly treated you are. WHY?! Don't you people care for yourselves more than that. Or has the Star Trek and Star Wars Episodes warped your thinking into a communal type of philosophy, where it is bad to voice your opinion. Why is it that we continue to stay in bad situations? Are we like abused spouses, and think things will change if we stay around.

Pull your heads out. The very idea of unions in this day in age is a joke. They don't work anymore. Just like socialism doesn't work. They would work if we weren't human and greedy people. Instead we, and I mean all of us not just Americans, are forced to look out for numbero uno, ourselves.

    4. A lot of anti-union people scream "I'm too good for a union - unions are for idiot construction workers." But many industry that depend on highly skilled labor are highly - pilots, aviation mechanics, teachers, athletes, actors. It obviously works for other "knowledge industries".

    You are kidding right?

They are very greedy. Let's look at teacher's unions. They are against standards for teaching and for performance based evaluation. As a result of their "union" power there are a vast majority of teachers that suck and don't give a piss about their students.

What really needs to happen is there needs to be more recruiting on the part of Colleges and Universities for their tech programs. What you see happening with a vast majority of tech companies is that they end up making their employees work overtime to compensate for the lack of qualified professionals. I know this is a major problem with Amazon, as my friend's fiance works for them and is constantly working overtime every single week, and not just a couple hours. As long as this continues in these types of companies the tech companies will continue to burn through us tech geeks.

I am against unions for one particular reason, and one alone. In the end once the "good work environment" becomes a standard it will the be about the Union's interest and not mine. Right now if I am not going to be treated well, as someone has so deftly stated I can go elsewhere for work, and usually an increase in salary.

I can't blame anyone for wanting to be an advocate for Open Source. I too am tired of Microsoft and their high overhead/poorly made software, but there are some realities that we all must face in the business world (ewwwww there is the gross word business, which translates into politics).

Here is the reality. In business companies like to use what everyone knows. This saves on training time, and new hardware expenses (for those programs that require more resources). If you place Linux, BSD, or even BeOS in front of your everyday user, which doesn't include our wonderful world of geekdom, they become like deer caught in headlights. They don't know what to do, or in some cases don't want to waste their time to learn something new when they can just go right to work on a platform with which they are familiar.

On a personal note, we use NT and 98 here at my place of employment. Granted I would much rather use FreeBSD (shameful plug), but the reality is that we have enough problems supporting Microsoft products that it can frustrate Users (that is with a silent L).
