    Tin Toy is on Disc 1 and Luxo is on Disc 2. The supplemental disc doesn't have any shorts, but it does explain all the hidden jokes.

    If there is one thing I've learned this week from interacting with a broad cross-section of people it's that cautious reflection and rational interpretations of events in a historical context is for wimps. We need to bomb somebody.

They don't go thinking about possible outcomes of a variety of responses, or sit around reading books looking for the lessons of History. They get mad and they try to bite whatever made them mad. Be more like your dog, sweetie."

    If anything, the Industrial revolution made people poorer. A few people got really rich, but the shift to a urban v. Rural lifestyle ruined the lives of generationsof people.

    At least with the Net the wealth that's been distrubuted has been a bit more equitable. Granted, nobody went from living on the street to .com millionaire, but Old Money didn't have much of an advantage.

    It's about time the Eds. started posting the Bitch link for NYT. in the NYT stories. They really don't understand how little their reg. system is helping them vs. hurting them. Even if only a fe K. /.'ers drop them a note, they'll get the message.

    Let's just hope they do something about it. I'm getting sick of going the extra step to get to the articles.

    Yes, there is a reason. Because they will NOT change their position. Nor should they. It's good for them. Why would they change their minds, just becuase it pisses people off?

    It's a Law, not a business policy. If you want to change it, you must rely on the Courts (which this would be a great case to do that with) or convince your representatives in Congress that it's a bad Law, an to at least amend the criminal provisions. I cannot imagine a world in whiich MSFT or the BSA would lobby to overturn the DMCA. Can you?

    Amen. If they can't make money on it, so what? I don't really care. It's not intended to make people rich. It's intended to facilitate communication and sharing.

    There are ways to maximize uptimes and availability. How often is yahoo not up(ddos attacks excluded)? or CNN? maybe this guy has a hotmail account, and developed his perception from it's availability.

    I fear that it would provide a false sense of security. It's more likely than not that parents would do just as you suggest, block everything 'cept .kids without bothering to audit sites first. It's deferring responsibilty, V-Chip style.

    More likely than not he reads National Geographic or watches TLC/Discovery Channel. Perhaps he's read of the Amazonian tribal societies that aren't as preoccupied with boobies and peepees as Americans and Northern European people tend to be.

    This will result in still more marketing towards "children". As if their lives aren't commercial enough already. There is no need for this. It is, really, a silly and predictable response to imagined fears. If people want safe places for their kids to surf, look before you let them leap.

    Actually, all I use is thier DNS. I use my own mail server. That's the great thing about RR; you don't have to authenticate, you can use any mail server, you can easily set up a LAN and share the connection, and on a good day I get +2Mb.

    now, the minute they start telling me I need to use anything related to AOL, is the minute I call up the local Telco to get DSL, adn DirecTV to get DSS (unless I get a job working for the LA Times, in which case I'll already have both cable and DSS)

    Believe it or not, I've been each at various times. When I got to 15 Karma points, I started to crave them. After 35 or so, I stopped caring. When I hit the cap, I started posting whatever I felt like posting, without consideration for finicky moderators.

    You introduce a printer into the system. Every IT guy/gal/ knows that printers are the source of all evil in the Universe.

    Adding a printer adds a magnitude of complexity, nuless it's a high-end printer like those used in manufacturing houses. But then, you add a magnitude of cost.

    No argument about the benefits of your suggestion, but I pity the fool that has to support it.

    Please. I have not an HDTV set. But I know these things (and have know n for years):

    HDTV-"Ready" means you need a decoder.

    HDTV signal is broadcast open-air, and all you need is an antenna and a set/box that will decode the analog signal.

    Any time a salesman tells you you need to buy more than one thing to get one thing, he can be talked out of it. If they want to give a special price for buying the bundle, fine. But you should ALWAYS be able to by a discrete component seperately.

    You need 'wiggle' room. Always allow for 2-3 inches in any opening for a TV to allow wiggling to move it in/out

    Frankly, this guy is stupid. That he would spend so much money on toys without knowing what he was buying is idiotic. And if he truley lived on the "Cutting Edge" of technology/electronics, he would know better. That this fool was willing to pay for both digital cable AND DirecTV is amazing. Does he have both electric and Gas furnaces, too? This guy's problems had more to do with his own ineptitude than any issues with the technology.
