    True, but what if they're all on a different channel of your controller. Problem solved, isn't it?

    If there were truly a statistical benefit to mixing drives like you say, I would have thought the analysts and Sun, EMC, and IBM would have adopted this strategy by now. Or have they?

    Maybe nobody analyzed it. But nevertheless, you have some good points.

    I wrote it before on Slashdot: because everyone depends more and more on the internet for their information, it is very important that big search engines like Google stay objective. That is: that they should spend big efforts on preventing that people trick Google into returning only THEIR opinion and such.

    A tip which I don't see mentioned very often: when using multiple drives in a raid-array, use drives from different batches. Or even better: from different vendors. Why? You don't want your complete raid-array failing because to much drives fail because of a common problem in their hardware/firmware.
    Ok, chances on that might be slim, but in my opinion you're better safe then sorry.

    Oh dear, recently bought one of those to be able to run MacOS X (had a powerpc 801).
    But wait: my Mac has PCI-slots, what if I just insert one of those el cheapo USB-cards? Will that work?

    Not only that: the applications seem to be written a bit smarter then the linux variants. For example: internet explorer 6.0 runs at least 5 times faster UNDER WINE! then Konqueror or Opera.

    I wonder how they will prevent biased conclusions...
    Since people are already succeeding in poisoning the Google-cache so that it their page comes up first for certain queries, and since more and more people are starting to depend on what information Google finds for them it'll get important that Google not only returns all "opinions" from one viewpoint but also the others.
    You don't care for that when looking for porn, but if you want to know more about, say, abortion it's best to hear from both sides and not only for the party that succeeded to poison the Google cache!

    No, it works different probably:
    the virus-maker will say to future customers: "I will send your e-mail to 1.000.000 users for only 50 dollars!" and then, in the background, use the p2p-network of infected machines.

    I really doubt that all spam out there was sent by the companies offering viagra etc. themselves. Much easier to have this done by some other company (like: no need to find relay-hosts, find out what program to use, etc. etc.)

    This lavarnd looks a bit as (as we say in Dutch:) 'old wine in new bottles': video_entropyd is quiet a while available for download.

    While you're at it, take a look at audio_entropyd as well: it generates random-values from unconnected inputs of your soundcard.

    • submitted it at freshmeat (and all the other software-releases websites)
    • contacted every UNIX-magazine on the planet which has an e-mail address
    • spammed every possibly related IRC-channel. questions like: "i wrote this program multitail and i'm out of ideas how to improve it" and "could someone help me porting it to " and not to forget "could someone help me package it for this or that distribution"
    • mention it in every post you do on websites (at least in your sig)


    result: everyone knows the program and some even use it.

    Ok, I have this laptop and this smc wifi-card.
    This driver gives support in Linux for this smc-card.
    Now, the only way I can obtain those drivers-sources, is to boot into linux and retrieve them with cvs. But when in linux, I cannot use the wifi-card and thus cannot get to the internet. The tarball on the sourceforge-site is something funny-looking with ,v at the end of the filenames.

    Maybe someone can pull things from cvs and put it into some 'normal' tar-ball?

    If you're interested in something like Twin: you might like MultiTail: it enables you to view multiple files and/or the output of multiple commands in one terminal-window.

    Description:
    MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your console (with ncurses). It can also use colors while displaying the logfiles, for faster recognition of which lines are important and which are not. It supports regular expressions. It has interactive menus for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software. Also multiple files can be merged into one window.
