  1. About the Subs... on Slashdot IRC Forum Today · · Score: 3, Interesting

Slashdot is a community based site.
Community participation equals a better site.
A better site equals larger reading base.

Take this three statements and apply them.

I won't mind paying 10-20 dollars a year to view slashdot without ads. Period. Anything extra you add to the subscription from there on in is bonus to me.

Now everybody else listen. A site operator that cared more about profits and such would have played his cards differently then Taco and gang have. They would have introduced the most obtrusive and annoying ads possible for a couple weeks claiming "The site needs it to survive." Then a few weeks or so after their introduction, they would have conviently come up with the idea of 'subscriptions'. They would say "Well, you hate the ads, right? Here's how you can get rid of them." In a buisness sense, that would have been the smart move.

But no, as can be seen in Taco's original post, Taco seems to care about fairness first. Letting a viewer base know beforehand, about the obtrusive ads that may plague them? Not a good buisness move. But it is an honest one.

Now what Taco and Co. need to know now is that we don't want pay-per-view Slashdot, we want $20 a year "pay for and forget about" Slashdot. We don't want to be reminded that we just spent $.02 last nite. We just want to know that we are helping.

  2. Anything could happen... on Warnings to Red Hat about AOL Buyout · · Score: 1

I think its important to remember that even though Nullsoft was swallowed up by AOL, Winamp didn't go down the tubes. They even hacked AIM to get rid of the ads after they had been swallowed up!

Another very important thing to think about is the fact that Microsoft needs a competitor. Yes, I know Linux is great and all now, but the fact remains that right now, after all these years of development, it remains a "geeky" OS. It just doesn't have the easy usability to compete effectivly against Windows for the "Grandmother" or "Mom and Pop" department. I think that if AOL were to buy Red Hat and develop it (keeping with the open source tradition) into a fullfledged Consumer OS this would be a good, maybe even great thing.

Just think of how Microsoft would have to change if AOL were successful. No longer could they be the only big kid on the block shoving around whoever they wished.

They only way to effectivly and permanently deal with huge overbearing companies is to fight them with other companies. So, with guarded optomism, I would support this, in its early stages.

  4. Like first test better... on Wolfenstein Multiplayer Test 2 Out · · Score: 1

In the second test it now looks like its around ten in the morning with the sky all white, I liked it better when it was darker, the 5 am feel. It seems as if the weapons are deadlier as well, I don't know what to think about this. The whole interface has been changed around so it feels like a completely different game.

The default sprint button has been moved to shift from caps lock, so undoubtedly, more people will actually use it. I don't know I kind of liked it when I was the only one on the map that could run fast ;). The entire level, not just the sky, seems brighter, and I don't think I like it very much, your opinions of course will vary. I wish they released the much talked about sub-base level, but unfortunatly no dice. Hey, can't complain about something free to much can we?

In closing, I think I liked the first version of the map more, spawning right in the front bunker as the axis was what made running up the beach at first hard!

How much better could a alumininum case be for cooling? I mean think about it, the only thing that ever touchs it are convection currents. I wonder how much a all copper case would cost..... hrmmmm.

  6. Re:Questions for the many knights out there on Jedi Knight Now (Not) Officially a Religion · · Score: 1

Yes the religon should be refered to as 'Jedi' Terms like Jedi Knight, and Jedi Master are states of existence within the religon, most often status that is reconised by other Knights and Masters in the faith.

The dark side is almost a seperate religon, though it implies an understanding of the force, most 'dark side jedi' are really followers are a different faith, that of the Sith.

Of course you can, one cannot be punished for circumstances beyond his or her control, just because you can't feel the force around you and affect it, doesn't mean you cann't acknowledge its effects on your environment around you.

The offical position on such things is varied, as there is no offical command structure in the faith right now, no offical comment can be given.

The making and use of lightsabers is a craft exclusive to the jedi alone. Only with days of meditation and study can one hope to make and use one properly. It is not something that can be taught to those outside the faith.

I hope I have assuaged your curiosity. ;)

  7. Privacy is Important to a Free Society on Browsing Privacy - Off With Your Headers! · · Score: 5, Insightful

Privacy, in of itself, is a lofty goal. It means that we all have to have the respect, trust, and good will to believe that others know what they are doing, and that they are, at least to some extent, 'good' people. That's alot of trust.

Many seem to have the view that "Well I'm not doing anything wrong, I don't mind the government watching me." This view is not a good one to have, and anyone who disagrees hasn't read enough Orwell. To achieve the goal of a better society, we must go the road that is harder to travel. It is to easy to approve programs of National ID cards, National skin implants, or National Internet tracking. They all avoid the real problem, which is fear, doubt and uncertainty.

We all need to feel secure. We need to feel that we can do something to avert past terrorist disasters. Well the truth is, if we want to stay a free society, we can't. Maybe for a month, or a year security checks will improve with hieghtened attention. But like the Cole, and the WTC bombing before it, these things will pass into history and we will be open again. Anybody can drive a bomb into a building. This is the price we pay for not having security checks before we enter our cities, or crossing fellow state borders.

If we want to look at how our society will be after all these proposed new laws, we have many places we can check. In Singapore crime is kept low with harsh penalties, no one wants to litter if the penatly is a beating. In Isreal crime is kept low by placing police everywhere, nobody wants to hijact a plane if they have to deal with 3 cops with guns to do it. We have to ask ourselves as a people, is all that really worth it? Is it worth living in a police state, to reduce one's chances of dying in a terrorist attck from .8% to .3%?

I trust my paper to be delivered on time, my university to provide me with good professors, and the police to protect me. They have enough power now, as it is. Privacy is that measure of trust I bestow on others to go about their business without my interference. If we loose that trust, we will become less then we are. It will be a step in the wrong direction. Wars sometimes cannot be avoided, they should be fought over these princepals, they are what makes us the remarkable people we are today. Remember these next few words in your heart, and carry them with you, throughout your daily lives. They are worth fighting for.

Those who desire to give up Freedom, in order to gain Security, will not have, nor do they deserve, either one. -Thomas Jefferson

  10. Censorship on Neither .Kids Nor .Porn For ICANN · · Score: 1

.xxx and .kids? These two were thrown out because they are ridiculus. The very idea of giving one organization the power to say "Your content is offensive. You forfit your domain name." is a terrible way to go. What about comedy sites? Will they be forced to give up their domain and go to .xxx because they have a picture of someone mooning someone else? The internet must remain a bastion of free-speech. No one has the right to not be offended. Some people seem to think they do. In my view its just like television, if you don't like the content, turn the channel or turn it off!
